PHT’s Morning Skate takes a look around the world of hockey to see what’s happening and what we’ll be talking about around the NHL world and beyond.

NHL Network analysts Kelly Chase, Craig Button, and Mike Johnson were united in their opinion that Brooks Orpik was the worst free agent signing made on July 1. Washington inked him to a five-year, $27.5 million contract. (Washington Post)

Provided he’s willing to spend another season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it might not be a bad idea for them to keep James Reimer. (The Globe and Mail)

Johnny Oduya‘s agent said the Blackhawks aren’t talking about trading his client. Chicago needs to shed some salary before the season starts to get under the cap. (ESPN)

With the dust settling on the unrestricted free agent market, the Avalanche are shifting their attention to re-signing Ryan O’Reilly. (Denver Post)

I’m glad they disliked the Orpik signing. They seemed to love every other signing. Despite some of the bad contracts that were thrown out there

Man DC signed the worst contract in NHL history, it seems. Hopefully all this bashing will give Orpik motivation to show that he’s worth the contract for at least the first year or else this story will only continue

      Typical media.
Yes, The price was high and 2yrs too long. But time will truly tell. GMBMac address the defense issue, which was needed. The cap is going up and the change of scenery might help Orpik out. I just think its too early to call this the “worst” deal

He doesnt need mitivation he just needs a system.that provides breakout options and puck support.

Orpik isn’t the issue of the signing, its 100% the term and price. A player isn’t going to say no to any GM throwing tons of cash in their face.

Orpik is a vet, he will do what he has done for years…

all of that said, there were horrible contracts made this year / FA frenzy day but Washington dealt two of them. Still can’t figure out what EDM was thinking either but at least their consistent.

He’s a great player who’s a bit past his prime, lost some speed, some skating ability. Doesn’t run his mouth or take cheap shots which both seem to be celebrated by a lot of fans. Price probably too high but he’s a good addition to the Caps.

Has there been any rumors of anyone talking with Lieno or Ott?

    • bullwinkle88 - Jul 4, 2014 at 2:23 PM

Why should anyone talk with Leino? Duh!

      • billsin20xx - Jul 5, 2014 at 8:09 AM

You are such a tool. It was a comment to see if any teams were dumb enough (other then a Regier managed team) to talk with him. LOL, Maybe he will sign with Arizona now!

BTW, did you notice all the thumbs down you got on your Regier posts? Last I saw it was likE 45 downs to 2 ups, LOL, really kind of shows your intelligence rating, doesn’t it?

Yeah rumour has it Leino to Caps, 4 yrs 24 million!

Orpick is only getting older, slower, and less of a major factor in the game plan. Have fun with him CAPS!
