Eakins doesn’t want Oilers to rely on ‘four players to put up our points’

Jul 4, 2014, 2:45 PM EDT

“We need people who can make plays, possess the puck, score goals. We don’t want to be a team who relies solely on basically four players to put up our points. There’s been a perception of our team being an offensive one. It’s the wrong perception, and we’re going to try and change that by adding guys like [Teddy] Purcell and [Benoit] Pouliot.”

The “four players” to which Dallas Eakins is referring are Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, David Perron, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. In 2013-14, the forwards with the fifth- and sixth-most points on the team were Sam Gagner and Ales Hemsky, neither of whom are still with the club.

The Oilers picked up Purcell in a trade with Tampa Bay and got Pouliot in free agency. They also added Mark Fayne and Nikita Nikitin on defense.

But even with the new additions, plus the ongoing development of Edmonton’s youngsters, the Oilers will be hard-pressed to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. The Western Conference could be even stronger in 2014-15, and Eakins’ squad wasn’t even close to qualifying last season.

Pouliot had the first OK season of his career and now is anointed with being handsomely overpaid and expect him to do more than he did last year with Zuccarello as his set up man. Personally, I don’t expect him to do that much.

Seriously one more season in the dog house and Yakupov is heading to Russia. They picked the wrong player first in two drafts. RNH and Yaks just are not players you build around. Edmonton was too cocky and thought you can’t go wrong with the 1st overall pick. They should at the very least be open to trading them if the deals make sense. I would fire their GM for even saying he won’t trade them. Your job a to make the team better regardless of who is in the trade.

We can’t rely on four players. We also can’t rely on centres. We only really had three of them for last season and we just traded one of them and didn’t pick up another in free agency. A severe lack of depth at centre, that can’t hurt us again.

As a viewer of the show, “Oil Change,” perhaps we should welcome these questionable moves. This perpetual ineptitude in the Oilers’ management has now provided four seasons of material for the producers. Bad management makes for good TV. Well, decent enough TV to kill an hour anyway.

Oil Change should get renewed for another 5 seasons the way this is going.

When you have the Killer and Lowe running things do you expect more?? 5 coaches in 6 years is embarrassing. Not sure Harold Ballard had such a record with HCs

None of us are “experts”. None of us have NHL filled resumes. But when Benoit Pouliot gets $20M on a team that needs goaltending and hardnosed D and 2-way play; I feel like I could be GM. He basically won Powerball. What a joke. Look forward to the buyout in 2 years (tops).
