Downie vows to protect Crosby, Malkin

Jul 3, 2014, 9:45 PM EDT

Back in 2010, Steve Downie delivered a questionable blow on Sidney Crosby. Now that they’re teammates with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he vows to make sure others don’t take liberties with the star forward.

The 27-year-old forward is a gritty player – especially for a solid scorer – yet he’s not often labeled as an “enforcer.” Then again, Downie poses a much better chance of being on the ice alongside top players like Crosby and Evgeni Malkin than a tough guy like departed defenseman Deryk Engelland.

The bigger problem might be Downie avoiding injury enough to protect Crosby and Malkin, though.

Downie was limited to 62 games in 2013-14, two in 2012-13, 75 in 2011-12 and so on. You can’t protect your teammates if you’re too injured to play, after all.

All that aside, it’s a nice low-risk pickup for the Penguins. Downie has a 22-goal season on his resume (along with multiple other double-digit scoring seasons) and can agitate/bring the snarl. Scoring some early points with potentially skeptical teammates with comments like these can only help him make a nice impression, whether he can back up those words or not.

    Sounds good to me.

    • blomfeld - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:31 PM

      GOOD LUCK WITH THAT !!!

      • President Charles Logan - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:36 PM

Hey Blom, how are your Calgary Flames ( your actual real team you used to root for before you hopped on LA’s wagon) gonna do this year?

  2. ruthlessandtoothless - Jul 3, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Can’t wait to watch him make every line he plays on 10x worse just like he did this past season. Thanks for taking him off our hands pitt.

    • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jul 4, 2014 at 7:46 AM

He really really really stinks !

    • iamcanadian87 - Jul 4, 2014 at 3:16 PM

Heard the same about Niskanen, Jokinen, etc… He’ll be the top paid UFA after with us, lol.

      • iamcanadian87 - Jul 4, 2014 at 3:16 PM

        *after a year with us.

No one is scared of you. You should keep your mouth closed and be happy your still employed.

  4. c9castine - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:00 PM

we need more players that are hated, despised and called dirty scumbags.

matt cooke leaving left a void. welcome to pittsburgh, steve downie

  5. esracerx46 - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:06 PM

    1. When was the last time someone “took liberties” on either Crosby or Malkin?
    2. Didn’t you just suffer a rather severe concussion?

    Shut up and play

  6. bleedrangerblue - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:14 PM

All I can say is LoL. Really? The NHL is scared.

  7. sjsharks66 - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:16 PM

Malkin does a good job of protecting himself. The entire Pens roster already protects Crosby. Just bring the physical presence they ditched with Glass, Engel, Orpik and you will fit in fine.

    • pj608 - Jul 4, 2014 at 2:02 PM

Who protects crosby???? Kunitz and Letang? Give me a break.

  8. shaundre93 - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:22 PM

Can’t wait to see what Downie tries to do if Sid and Chara get into it again hahaha players like him are definitely beneficial, but that comment is really foolish. Prove you can actually help that lineup before running your mouth about how you’ll keep all the baddies in line.

    • jernster21 - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:33 PM

Downie has lit up Chara (albeit a hit, not a fight) before so it wouldn’t be the first time.

  9. esracerx46 - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:24 PM

Anyone remember the Akim Aliu incident with Downie? Classy guy.

  10. 950003cups - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:26 PM

I thought that was Gary Bettman’s job. But if by “protecting” Crosby and Malkin he means sleeping with their women, and taking cheap shots at them during practice, then I’m sure Sid and Geno will be all warm and fuzzy.

  11. onemorematt - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:35 PM

Thanks again Philly. I swear, even when we aren’t playing you guys, you give us problems.

I’m sort of worried about our lack of fight this upcoming year if this guy is our tough guy. Seems most fights I’ve seen him in, he’s been on the losing end. I’d rather have a guy on the ice who throws and finished a lot of hits then an agitator whose going to put us on the pk.

  12. letsgopens8771 - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:00 PM

I love this guy already. He said on Mark Madden’s show, “I would go to war for Sid and Geno.” That’s heart there. Marc Staal will think twice about cross checking him in the back now.

  13. flyerspsu - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:12 PM

whats he going to do? he tried the same thing w/ the Flyers in his first game back where the mic’d up showed him challenging several guys who were taking liberties (which i respect) until he finally stepped in to fight Volpatti and got tko’d w/ a concussion and never tried it again the rest of year

Downie had at least 2 but probably 3 concussions last season, as a result he veered away from this stuff for the vast majority of the season, I cant see him doing it much next year after that, and if he does, nobody is really gonna be scared of him, but hey if he wants to go for it

    • bmoreredfury311 - Jul 4, 2014 at 1:30 AM

Volpatti dropped Downie like a sack of rotten potatoes. Let him talk. Typical Pitt goon it up.

  14. sdave2944 - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:31 PM

Wow what a tuff guy. If I remember correctly the last concussion he received was from him running into the back of another player. The guy did not even see him coming, Downie was looking down and hit him from behind and was out of action for two weeks. The whole NHL is going to cower because you are the enforcer……… OK cant wait for the first Flyers game, if he’s still in the line up………

  15. President Charles Logan - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:34 PM

Ok so what’s he supposed to say ??/ I’m just here for the ride and wanna contribute?

  16. bubblehead22 - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Well after the Rangers series if he just beats one opposing player’s a$$ and/or delivers a good hit following a cheap shot I’ll be happy. After watching 87 take a cross check to the head among other things and no one on the Pens did anything about it he COULD provide some much needed…. Balls.

    • mvshark - Jul 4, 2014 at 4:27 PM

Well maybe if 87 din’t take cheap shots with his stick on all opposing players and has been doing so for years, guys would not retaliate…did 87 not punch a guy in the groin from behind? Seems to me I saw that. If players in NHL do that to 87…maybe its because he doesn’t get the respect you think he deserves…Players did not do that stuff to Gretzky because h, 99, did not do anything like 87 does. If someone delivers a legal it to either Pen,and this bozo goes after them, does this quote not warrant more of a suspension, as he has said as much?

  17. dropthepuckeh - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:44 PM

Hard to protect anyone when you are one hit away from retired and possible brain damage, stand at maybe 5’11”, and will probably be suspended for the games he isn’t injured. Great bravado though.

  18. drewzducks - Jul 4, 2014 at 12:03 AM

So they’ve replaced Orpik’s puddle of piss with this guy’s puddle of drool. Should make for fun times.

  19. sizzle299 - Jul 4, 2014 at 1:19 AM

Protect them from where, in the minors? Dude is total dead weight. Can’t believe the flyers lost Talbot for him

  20. pj608 - Jul 4, 2014 at 1:51 AM

I love how everyone has no faith in Downie…. He will be fine. He is older and more mature. Hes realizing all of his down falls and he wont have a job if he doesnt clean up his act. He will turn around for the better and silence all you no brain critics.

    • avscup - Jul 4, 2014 at 9:50 AM

Hahahahaha! You are clueless. A 5’10, 189 lb tough guy with a mouth and a concussion problem? He was pounded by Volpatti and lost twice to Ryan Getzlaf. Who is he gonna protect Sidney from?

LOL. Can’t wait to see it!!!

    • dropthepuckeh - Jul 4, 2014 at 2:18 PM

Sounds like you guys are good friends and you are in his head with that insight. It’s the same excuses we heard out of Pitt about Cooke and Neal being reformed. Over/under Downie plays 40 games this year for them. I’m taking the under due to A. Suspension B. Concussion/ injury C. he’s horrible and will be healthy scratch

  21. rushledger - Jul 4, 2014 at 2:59 AM

Marc Staal took some high checks on Sid multiple times defending him. I’m all good with the checking gotta pay a price but still he had a lot of high ones to the back of the head and neck. That happens downie needs to lay into Staal.

    • pj608 - Jul 4, 2014 at 2:08 PM

Everyone tries to take a shot at crosby. Hes the best player in the game…. Thats why Wayne Gretzky had guys like McSorley, and Dave Semenko on his team. Crosby doesnt have that on the pens. Anyone that you guys are mentioning from Pittsburgh are teddy bears compared to those guys.

  22. spitfisher - Jul 4, 2014 at 7:24 AM

How many countless scrums and even fights are caused or promoted by Cindy, after the play with his own brand of cheap shot or retaliation to the opposing team? only to skate away from it like he had nothing to do with it.

Idle threats such as this from Downie are useless, and puts more of a burden on the PK

  23. officialgame - Jul 4, 2014 at 7:54 AM

The guy can’t protect himself let alone those two. Downie is one concussion way from early retirement.

  24. orangandblack - Jul 4, 2014 at 8:08 AM

Hard to protect anyone from the sin bin.

  25. flyerguy73 - Jul 4, 2014 at 9:15 AM

What a tool. Glad he is gone. Maybe they should put the “C” on his sweater for concussion. Lol.

  26. Hard to BeLeaf - Jul 4, 2014 at 9:45 AM

Downie has to protect Crosby and Malkin. Otherwise that monster Claude Giroux will leave their butt cheeks sore and red.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jul 4, 2014 at 1:05 PM

Well those two are used to having sore, red butts.

    • pj608 - Jul 4, 2014 at 2:10 PM

Malkin is a tough dude…. Remember when he took out bergeron. I think he broke his nose and that fight was over in like 1 punch. Bergeron is no wuss. Thats why i dont understand why hes not captain over Crosby. Hes bigger and way harder to piss of and take out of the game

      • pj608 - Jul 4, 2014 at 2:11 PM

yeah, Malkin gave Rick Nash a beating too.

  28. jm31221 - Jul 4, 2014 at 12:58 PM

    One word, Volpati, good luck.

  29. broadstreetbeatdown - Jul 4, 2014 at 1:04 PM

The NHL has just collectively crapped themselves.

  30. theageofquarrel - Jul 4, 2014 at 1:52 PM

Flyer fans need to worry about their own crappy team that hasn’t won jack in 40 years.
Keep telling us how ” tough” your team is now that your “captain” has come out of the closet.

    • pj608 - Jul 4, 2014 at 2:08 PM

      HAHAHA…. that is awesome

    • flyerspsu - Jul 4, 2014 at 4:12 PM
