Report: Grabovski to sign later today, with U.S.-based team

Jul 2, 2014, 2:12 PM EDT

From Sportsnet’s Mark Spector:

If we had to pick the likeliest destination, we’d have to pick Nashville, given the Predators’ inability yesterday to land a center to play with James Neal.

(Update: Or maybe not, given the Preds have signed Olli Jokinen.)

Most of the other American teams either got the top centers they coveted (see: St. Louis, Anaheim, and Dallas), or they don’t have the cap space to add Grabovski.

Other U.S.-based teams that have already added centers in free agency or via trade include Chicago (Brad Richards), Florida (Dave Bolland), and Arizona (Sam Gagner).

As for Grabovski, there was speculation in April that he may want to play with still-unsigned Nikolai Kulemin after both were teammates in Toronto.

“They’re always talking about, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to play on the same team together,'” agent Gary Greenstin told the National Post. “They’re best friends. They play great together. We’ll see what happens.”

Probably Nashville, they’d pay him. I’m a little dissapointed as a Caps fan he was asking for so much and didn’t want to resign. Would’ve been completely fine using our Orpik money to sign him instead. I like Grabo a lot, plays his heart out and has a lot of skill, even if he’s not really a point per game producer or anything. Hustles back and plays defense too. Best of luck to him wherever he goes, maybe the US based team is my Caps? i can only hope.

He is a good player. I hope he goes to NJ… Nashville is looking for a C as well though. I wouldnt doubt that NJ would over pay as usual though.

NY is looking for a center. he seems like a player who would fit under AV’s system.

With what cap space would we sign him?

    • DED - Jul 2, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Not for the $5 million he’s looking for. Not enough room unless Sather’s playing hardball with Zuc, Brass, and Kreider.

The Radulov experience must be forgotten by now.

  4. rsl22 - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:49 PM

Carolina or Columbus? Both have cap space and could use some offensive help.

  5. purpleguy - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:03 PM

With a name like Grabovski I suspect he doesn’t want to play with Giroux.

    • pj608 - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:10 PM

Careful. Giroux might grab his @$$

      • ibieiniid - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:22 PM

can we at least try to make these creative, before the funny wears off? you didn’t even put a pun in there or anything.

      • pj608 - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:33 PM

Puns are gay. a wait… Is that one???

    • mactruck27 - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:29 PM

Would love to see an all-grab line of Grabner-Grabovski-Giroux

      • pj608 - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:36 PM

NYI isnt getting rid of Grabner. Even Garth Snow isnt that dumb…. He cant finish a shot for the life of him but he gets so many breakaways its insane. One game this year against NJ. He had 4 and only scored on 1 and it wasnt even a good shot. Marty tried to stack the pads which would of worked 10 years ago with some youth and it barley trickled in

      • bcisleman - Jul 2, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Garth’s not dumb at all. Likely Grabs doesn’t get moved until one or both of the elite wingers we just drafted are NHL-ready–possibly in 2015.

  6. pj608 - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:05 PM

Go to NJ. Dont ask for over 3.5 or 4 million…. AND DONT GO TO KHL!!!!

  7. lightning79 - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:06 PM

I’m going to predict Devils or Capitals.

    • pj608 - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:09 PM

Caps have no CAP space left…. They didn’t need Orpik in my opinion. A team like Edmonton should have signed Orpik

      • lightning79 - Jul 3, 2014 at 8:10 AM

NO One should’ve signed Orpiks to that massive deal lol, but yeah I didn’t really look at their cap space.

Orpiks might actually help Mike Green turn things around. Maybe

    • pr0jecktpat - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:33 PM

As much as I’d like it to be the Caps they only have a little over 2 million left in cap space.

  8. paperlions - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Would it be greedy to hope the Blues sign him? It would be, wouldn’t it.

  9. islesjb - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:48 PM

Wouldn’t surprised if the Isles threw some serious money at him- god knows they have the cap space and are willing to overpay for talent.

It would allow Nielsen to center the 3rd line which is a better fit for his two-way style. Top 3 with Tavares-Grabovski-Nielsen down the middle would be pretty sweet.

    • bcisleman - Jul 2, 2014 at 4:27 PM

Isles might have an interest depending on what Legwand does.

      • storminator16 - Jul 2, 2014 at 5:11 PM

You have won the Interwebs today, sir. You (somewhat) called it 30 minutes before it happened.

      • islesjb - Jul 2, 2014 at 5:55 PM

I appreciate the recognition- I shall post this comment thread on my mother’s refrigerator
