Report: Flyers captain Giroux arrested, jailed overnight

According to a report from the Ottawa Sun, Claude Giroux spent Tuesday night in an Ottawa police cell following an altercation with local police.

From the Sun:

Although few details were immediately available, a source said Giroux was arrested for repeatedly grabbing the buttocks of a male police officer. Alcohol is believed to have been involved.

A witness and sources say the incident occurred outside The Great Canadian Cabin in the Byward Market club district.

Ottawa Police have refused any comment on the incident. Police said they cannot comment unless charges are laid, but several sources did confirm to the Sun Giroux spent the night in jail.

The Sun’s sources also claim Giroux, 26, was expected to be released Wednesday morning without any criminal charges. No word yet on if that’s happened.

Per the establishment’s website, the Great Canadian Cabin “has been a staple of Ottawa’s entertainment scene for over 17 years.” It’s Twitter bio includes what appears to be a reference to “NHL Guest Bartenders” and has a picture of what appears to be Giroux tending bar in May of ’12:

Giroux was born and is a native of Northern Ontario (Hearst, to be specific) but has reportedly lived in the Ottawa area for the last few years.

Update: From CSN Philly…

And one from the Flyers…

You probably didn’t see it but I posted at Giroux’s expense earlier. Pittsburgh is currently the most despised NHL team but it is a compliment in a way; if they didn’t have a Cup and Crosby (and it’s not his fault the NHL marketed him as the face of hockey too much) plus (perceived) band wagon fans, no on would care.

    • bandree - Jul 3, 2014 at 7:47 AM

He knew what he was doing! He was so upset from his tummy stick buddy Hartnell getting traded that he figured it was time to move on to something new! Eventually he’ll try to recover his manhood by getting photographed with a chick probably a prostitute! I just hope when that day comes and he’s exposed the prostitute turns out to be a tranny! God that would be the ultimate fail! Stay classy Philly!

This is the funniest story I’ve heard since the one about how Al Iafrate’s wife slept with every member of the team…..except for poor Al.

Mr. Giroux, shame on you, you wicked, vile sodomite

    • fpstratton - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:22 PM

Yes, Mr. Giroux has forever soiled the Flyers’ reputation with his thoughtless act. What on earth are we going to tell the children?

Time for another vacation on “Dry Island”?

Should we start the countdown to when the Philly press runs him out of town for partying too much?

    • bek3017 - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:47 AM

      Mike Richards anyone? Lol

  19. stcrowe - Jul 2, 2014 at 4:39 PM

If he is gay, and I don’t know if he is, this will be an interesting test case for the NHL, and professional sports in general. There are a lot of teams, in this day and age, where it might not be a problem. However, there is a macho mentality that comes with being a Philadelphia Flyer. Stay tuned.

    • 950003cups - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:18 PM

Dude! Piss off! This is about making fun of Giroux. Not a gay rights conversation.

  20. crazemastercraze - Jul 2, 2014 at 4:39 PM

This organization is a bundle of laughs on and off the ice. The keystone cops of professional sports

Usually its the NFL that makes the off season headlines, thanks Claude for the laugh

  22. girouxed - Jul 2, 2014 at 6:51 PM

Never going to hear the end of this now, great.

  23. drewsylvania - Jul 2, 2014 at 8:04 PM

Why does it matter whether the cop was male or female?

    • 950003cups - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:22 PM

Read the comments. If it were a female cop, it would be all about sexual harassment and how he should be jailed and sued.

But (no pun intended) since it was a male cop, its comical. If the Ottawa police saw this message board they would drop the pending charges (has not actually been charged) and buy him a beer.

    • brewinflames - Jul 3, 2014 at 1:16 PM

      Much ado about nothing…

He was proably just having some fun, gave the cop a good game pat/smack/grab and some sens fan cop over reacted.

      However, it’s still funny.

  24. bubblehead22 - Jul 2, 2014 at 8:23 PM

I guess Claudia couldn’t control himself, must have been out celebrating his “best player in the world” title given to him by the coach who was… Fired.

I could care less if the guy is gay and if he was on another team I wouldn’t bother. This is strictly about hate for philly fan

  25. joewilliesshnoz - Jul 2, 2014 at 8:32 PM

Absolutely priceless. This is funnier than the Flyers missing the playoffs.

  26. swadehoo - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:03 PM

I don’t care if you bit the dude’s rear. Win us a cup G.

  27. ducksk - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:33 AM

I’ve been really really drunk many many times, never once drunk enough to not know better than to lay a hand on a cop. There’s drunk and then there’s stupid, and when the 2 collide, you grab a cops trunk.
