Red Wings, Canucks, Preds fail to address needs in Day 1 of free agency

Did we jinx them? Because…

Here’s where we wrote on Monday about Red Wings general manager Ken Holland needing to add a right-shooting defenseman.

And here’s where we wrote about Canucks general manager Jim Benning needing to add a top-six forward.

And here’s where we wrote about Predators general manager David Poile needing to add a center to play with James Neal.

Yesterday, each GM struck out. And today, their options are severely limited.

Does Detroit make a push to get Tyler Myers out of Buffalo? There were rumors of that around the draft. Myers wouldn’t come cheap though; nor would he come without significant risk, given his uneven play with the Sabres. What else could Holland do? Well, when Matt Niskanen signed with Washington, we hypothesized he could call the Caps about Mike Green, but then Brian MacLellan said Green is still in his team’s plans.

“Still lots of players out there that could be good one-year bargains,” Holland said, per MLive. “I was hoping to get a right-shot defenseman or two. They signed elsewhere, that’s their prerogative.”

One UFA name we’ll throw out there: Sami Salo. He’s 39 and has always been injury-prone, but he’s still got a booming point shot and can make a good first pass.

Meanwhile, does Vancouver consider signing Radim Vrbata, i.e. the only 20-goal scorer that wasn’t picked up yesterday? Benning said late Tuesday the Canucks had thought about it, but at the same time didn’t sound too excited about it. Benning failed to convince Jarome Iginla to come to Vancouver.

Does Nashville consider signing Mikhail Grabovski? The 30-year-old is arguably the top center still available in free agency. So…yeah.

Does everyone remember when Kenny Holland sucks and has been awful for the past 3-4 years.

Remember when the guy thinks it’s 1997 when everyone wants to come to the team no matter what?

Remember when they guy is so gun shy about making any deals that he has to scramble with his tail between his legs and makes the dumbest lateral moves in the history of earth?

Remember when the Red Wings playoff streak will probably end now

Remember when fans don’t even care about the streak anymore because 1st round exits are not worth it

Remember when we have the assets to make a legitimate trade IE Tatar,Jurco,50 billion other prospects

Remember when almost every wings fan is starting to hate on this guy more and more every year?

Remember when he didn’t want to trade a 1st round pick for Bouwmeester(top 2 on a top team in the NHL) and then consequently gives up a 1st for Quincey?

Remember when he didn’t address the 2 areas of need yesterday and resigned a guy who no longer fit in the clubs plans AND gave him a raise and did it for 2 years?

sorry for the rant, i literally could go on for 50 more lines, I am just so fed up with his ego and thinking he can do no wrong. He did way more wrong things in the recent 4 years then right. If he was on any other team he would probably be gone or at least on the Hot seat right now. We let Nill go to Dallas who in 13 months acquired 2 #1 centers. We let Yzerman go who looks like a freaking genius more times then not. Time to promote him like the Flyers did with Holmgrom and move some new blood in. If this team doesn’t acquire the 1-2 things they need Babcock is as good as gone. That is all

Some people may not agree because Holland was always presumed as a hockey recruiting god. Which is not the case and has not been the case for a long time. He has not made a good long term signing since the salary cap era. He had Hossa for a one shot deal and Alfie might come back. But for every decent pick up he has had, he had 5 terrible ones to go with it. He was only good when he had endless money to spend. And since he couldn’t get Babcocks guys, this will be Babcocks last season with us. Unless something dramatically changes before October.

Yes we have a very solid young prospects. But for all teams in the NHL it is a win right now motto… not a win in 5 years. But I don’t agree with what you said about trading some of our young talent. I mean you seen what he did with Legwand and Quincey… how could you possibly think that is a good idea with his given track record. Especially when the young kids are our only hope.

      • mshantz22 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:34 PM

Not made a good long-term signing? Really? That statement is baffling. Have you not heard of Henrik Zetterberg or Nicklas Kronwall? Both have long-term contracts for $6 and $4.8 million and if you ask me are definitely under-paid.

    • rbbbaron - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:30 PM

Oh, I didn’t read your rant before posting below (saw too many lines), but I guess we’re on the same page: Holland is crowding out talent, both on the roster and in the front office

    • mshantz22 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:30 PM

I agree that the wings need a new GM. Beyond that I think you are wrong about a lot of other things. Say what you want about Holland, but the man built a system that is envied by almost every other team in the NHL. People say “Detroit isn’t a desirable destination” and that isn’t quite accurate. Looking at the teams that got the FA’s you have NY, who just went to the finals, Washington, which is about to undergo a major change for the better with Trotz and was looking dangerous before anyone went there. Detroit is going through what is basically a rich man’s rebuild so to speak. They are waiting for the good young talent to come in and replace the older talent and holes in the lineup. Holland should not have his contract extended and same goes for Babs. Blashill would be his replacement.

      • dueman - Jul 2, 2014 at 1:30 PM

Keep telling yourself that….Buffalo, Florida, Phoenix, and even Edmonton managed to pull off moves that will help their teams! All Detroit did was re-sign Quincey, who a couple days prior said they were letting walk…

    • guitarhunterdude - Jul 2, 2014 at 1:13 PM

It’s looking like, between Holland and Jim Nill, Detroit kept the wrong guy.

    • thatsnuckinfuts - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:32 PM

Remember missing the playoffs? Oh That’s right
Remember who drafted Nyquist in the 4th round?
      Tatar in the 2nd
      Mantha 20th overall
      Mrazek in the 5th
      Jurco in the 2nd
      Pulkkinen in the 2nd
      Frk in the 2nd

I have no problem calling every Red Wings fan who whines about Holland a complete and utter BUFFOON. Only idiots think teams are built thru FA, only idiots think it’s a good plan to over-pay in FA.

People like you and others are as clueless as they come. I tell you who doesn’t agree with you, EVERYONE IN THE NHL
Jim Nill thinks you’re an idiot
Steve Yzerman thinks you’re an idiot
Mike Babcock thinks you’re an idiot

Pretty much everyone in hockey, Hall of Famers, decision makers, they ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL think you’re an idiot.

Why don’t you take your stupid opinion and try to get Yzerman or Nill attention someday and tell them what you think, what how they give you a “are you stupid look” and walk away.

      Clowns, all of you

    • thatsnuckinfuts - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:35 PM

“Oh look Dallas and Tampa (two garbage teams) were able to do this and that” brilliant comparison, totally different cap situations and needs.

But of idiot Red Wing fan crying over not getting Anton Stralman.

Again it can’t be said enough, anyone crying about Holland is a spoiled lil female dog who hasn’t a clue about hockey realities.

    • thatsnuckinfuts - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:38 PM

“I don’t want to make the playoffs yearly and draft well in a salary cap league I want a GM to throw around money during the FA period when everyone s getting overpaid”

That’s what fools like you are saying.

Draft better than ANY OTHER TEAM in the NHL for 20 years and you STILL have know-nothing yammering buffoons crying about Holland.

    • thatsnuckinfuts - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:48 PM

Puts together a roster that still makes the playoffs despite injuries to it’s best players.

Hires and places key people in scouting and coaching at every level of the organisation that results in developing legit NHL players year after year after year.

Doesn’t make a slash in the most overrated and expensive period (FA) and oh look at the tears.
Such a joke, it’s like you people actually believe that his only job in during FA and trade talk.

      • rbbbaron - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:11 PM

        Something about straw man…

      • thatsnuckinfuts - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:29 PM

Something about one of only 2 GM’s in the NHL today that is 100% certain for the Hall of Fame.

Red Wing fans are spoiled and clueless and have been for years.

THANK GOD Holland didn’t go out and do something stupid like sign Niskannen or Stralman to all that money.

Here’s a fact, it’s sometimes better to do nothing than force yourself to act. Holland is the best GM in the NHL period. anyone who thinks otherwise doesn’t have a leg to stand on, I can list 2 decades of draft picks while anyone any of you name have some tiny resume that can’t compare.

Shut up the lot of yas, you haven’t a clue what you’re talking about. I’ll say it again, go on, find some hockey people, find Stevie Y and Jimmy Nill and tell them your stupid opinions about Holland and just watch them tell you how foolish you are just like I am doing now.

      • thatsnuckinfuts - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:29 PM

Same stupid Red Wing fans that cried for Alex Semin 2 years ago, just complete idiots.

      • rbbbaron - Jul 3, 2014 at 1:06 PM

“THANK GOD Holland didn’t go out and do something stupid like sign Niskannen or Stralman to all that money.”
If you’re going to try to say how great Holland is and how stupid other people are, it might not be the best idea to use examples where Holland in fact tried (but didn’t succeed) to sign some players to a “stupid” amount of money. (unfortunately one case where he did succeed was with Weiss…)

  2. runhigh24 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:03 PM

Interesting how Detroit being the premiere destination for UFA’s died off after Nicklas Lidstrom retired. Still great at developing young talent though.

  3. stevepopo - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:04 PM

What about Ottawa? I’m scared they are competing with us Sabres for McDavid now.

    • runhigh24 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:11 PM

That wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world actually.

  4. mactruck27 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:06 PM

Preds seem to be in a Catch-22. Scorers don’t want to go there because they’re not a real contender. Not a real contender because they can’t score. Unfortunate for a fan base that really seems to love that team.

  5. pjblake2redwings - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:27 PM

Holland blew it.. Trade Jurco, and Anderrson and #2 pick next yr for Myers and lets roll the dice

  6. rbbbaron - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:28 PM

Holland is getting gamed by the rest of the league. Time to get out of the way before the organization loses yet more managerial talent (see: Yzerman, Nill, soon Babcock).

  7. c9castine - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:35 PM

detroit might need to rebuild for real….

its been happening in slow motion for about 5 years now. remember when everybody used to say detroit is getting too old they cant keep up with the retirements via the draft? it finally happened.

  8. blynasty - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:22 PM

Penguins should go after Salo at a discount. It would be solid to have a right handed mentor to play with Maatta. Plus they were a hell of a pair in the Olympics this year. Takes a valuable roster spot away from Dumolin, Pouliot, of Sammelsson.

  9. smarshall3789 - Jul 2, 2014 at 4:07 PM

Die hard wings fan here and everyone rippin on Holland is a joke! How can you hate a guy who built a dynasty! We as wings fans need to realize this is a traditional period for the team. I mean really which other gm has built a solid team year in and year out with out drafting in the top 20 for 20 some years! yzerman I believe has had plenty of top 5 picks and Holland hasn’t! Who do u think showed Stevie how to be a gm in the league. This guy is a hockey genius and does nothing but find gems in the later rounds unlike 97percent of the other gms! Yes he’s made some bad moves and bad contracts but who doesn’t! He will be in Detroit till he retires and I’m fine with it! Wings fans need to realize there are other top destinations now for free agents and you built your team they the draft! Yzerman Lindstrom Hull Shanahan ect have all been retired and Detroit is not a top place to play! Give it two or 3 more years and we will be back on the map I’m sorry us spoiled RedWings never seen a rebuild but it’s happening and it needed to deal with it!

“How can you hate a guy who built a dynasty!”
Stop giving him credit for something he didn’t do
