Report: Stevens staying in L.A., with promotion

2012 NHL Stanley Cup Final - Game Six

LOS ANGELES, CA - JUNE 11: (L-R) Former Philadelphia Flyers Mike Richards #10, assistant coach John Stevens and Jeff Carter #77 of the Los Angeles Kings hold up the Stanley Cup after the Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils 6-1 to win the Stanley Cup series 4-2 in Game Six of the 2012 Stanley Cup Final at Staples Center on June 11, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. This possibility was hinted at earlier. Stevens has won two Stanley Cups as an assistant to Darryl Sutter in Los Angeles, and there’s been talk he could eventually take over from Sutter.

Regardless of how Stevens’ future unfolds with the Kings, his promotion in L.A. means one less strong candidate for the four current head-coaching vacancies in Vancouver, Florida, Carolina and Pittsburgh.

Stevens was reportedly a finalist last year for the Vancouver job that went to John Tortorella.
