Report: Stevens staying in L.A., with promotion

Jun 18, 2014, 4:59 PM EDT

From Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman:

This possibility was hinted at earlier. Stevens has won two Stanley Cups as an assistant to Darryl Sutter in Los Angeles, and there’s been talk he could eventually take over from Sutter.

Regardless of how Stevens’ future unfolds with the Kings, his promotion in L.A. means one less strong candidate for the four current head-coaching vacancies in Vancouver, Florida, Carolina and Pittsburgh.

Stevens was reportedly a finalist last year for the Vancouver job that went to John Tortorella.

Where does one go as an assistant coach on a Stanley Cup winning team? I would think that if he got a promotion, the only other option is to head coach. Do they just plan to give him more money?

Mike Johnston would be my next choice in Vancouver.

Excellent track record of success and player development in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks and he was a long-time Assistant/Associate Coach to Marc Crawford in Vancouver from 1999-2006.

He also has experience coaching the Sedins.

I guess everyone forgets he was relieved if head coaching duties while coaching the kings. Great assistant coach….so so head coach

I guess you don’t understand the mean of interim. It’s not your fault. I blame the Philly school system. 4 games is all he coached for the Kings while they were looking for a permeant head coach. Maybe the Kings knew he wasn’t ready at the time. But I guess that is a knock on the Flyers organization if the Kings felt he wasn’t ready in 2011-12 and the Flyers gave him a NHL head coaching job 06-07.

Yeah cause the kings have a wealth more experience then the flyers organization. Do you forget that lombardi worked for the flyers an hextall is from the flyers organization the ones that built that team. I love it when a pit fan takes a jab at our city. Do you guys not realized how messed up an dirty pit really is? You’d swear you guys live in Beverly Hills the way you call out other city’s for being the trashiest it’s hilarious

The cynic in me says “thanks for not hiring him last year Gillis!” and that GMMG is still haunting this team with his bad decisions.

That said maybe that’s what last years obstacle was and it never came out.

Now I’m concerned the Canucks will have to settle for Bylsma or Crawford if they miss out on Desjardins. Oh and please not Arniel…
