The Montreal Canadiens have re-upped with one of their most surprising playoff performers, giving checking forward Dale Weise a two-year, $2 million contract extension on Tuesday.

“The acquisition of Dale Weise contributed to the success of our team this season,” Habs GM Marc Bergevin said in a statement. “A young veteran with a lot of character, Dale is an intense player with a strong work ethic.

“We’re very pleased to have him as part of our team moving forward.”

Weise, acquired from Vancouver in exchange for Raphael Diaz this season, scored six goals and 16 points in 61 games split between the Canucks and Canadiens this season. In the playoffs, Weise emerged as one of Montreal’s most versatile forwards, scoring seven points in 16 games, leading the Habs with two game-winning goals (tied with Max Pacioretty and Rene Bourque.)

Just 25 years old, Weise is getting a nice bump from the $615,000 he made last year, and gets some security after playing the last three seasons on one-year deals.
