Report: Spezza wants out of Canada, not just Ottawa

You can count the Calgary Flames as one of the early teams to reportedly make a bid on Ottawa Senators captain Jason Spezza. The only problem is he doesn’t want to play there or anywhere else in the country, according to the Ottawa Sun.

Spezza, who has requested a trade, has reportedly put the Flames, Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver Canucks, and Edmonton Oilers on his list of 10 teams he won’t move to. Senators GM Bryan Murray doesn’t want to trade Spezza within the Atlantic Division, so that likely rules out the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens regardless of whether or not Spezza bothered to put them on the list.

Murray suggested that Spezza wants out in part because he felt he was being blamed too often when the Senators struggled and he might feel like he would be in a similar situation in other Canadian markets.

There’s some early speculation that the Anaheim Ducks and St. Louis Blues might be interested in Spezza’s services, but the process will be complicated by the fact that center Ryan Kesler might also be on the market.

He is getting more and more affordable every time he opens his mouth . . . That 7 mil cap hit still looms . . .

  2. Wineshard - Jun 15, 2014 at 12:40 PM

Spezza does not want to be “in the kitchen” any longer.

  3. rsl22 - Jun 15, 2014 at 12:42 PM

To be fair, does anyone want to go to Edm, Calgary, Vancouver or Winnipeg these days?

    • nunan - Jun 15, 2014 at 1:27 PM

      haha

      • rauhj - Jun 16, 2014 at 1:49 PM

        Nice analysis-get off your computer

    • dueman - Jun 15, 2014 at 3:07 PM

      Exactly!

      • beergold - Jun 16, 2014 at 8:25 AM

        Or Toronto haha!

    • urallstupid - Jun 15, 2014 at 9:02 PM

vancouver is nice cause of the weather, really dunno about the other 3

  4. pavelfitzgerald - Jun 15, 2014 at 12:49 PM

So he wants to go somewhere in the States where they don’t care about hockey?
I would think that would rule out St. Louis then.
Edmonton & Calgary look bad but Vancouver isn’t that far removed from their long sustained success. If Winnipeg can impeove their goaltending then they will be on the brink of something special

    • nj666 - Jun 15, 2014 at 1:36 PM

yeah it clearly cant be because of all the success all the canadian teams have had over the years…

      • jimeejohnson - Jun 15, 2014 at 3:50 PM

I think you MN and PA guys are lying.

      • elrock7 - Jun 15, 2014 at 8:21 PM

oh but it is fine that all your American teams are loaded with Canadians.

    • purpleguy - Jun 15, 2014 at 2:13 PM

Yeah, we hate hockey here in MN.

      • flyerspsu - Jun 15, 2014 at 3:34 PM

Philly too, hockey is non existent here

      • miketoasty - Jun 16, 2014 at 7:42 AM

Might as well throw Pittsburgh in the mix as well, really not a single person here pays attention to anything other than basketball……

    • jh0122 - Jun 16, 2014 at 1:27 AM

Is that the same St. Louis that sold out only 10 of 41 games this past season–fewer than Nashville or Tampa Bay–despite having one of the best teams in the league? Yeah, they’re rabid.

  5. bcisleman - Jun 15, 2014 at 12:57 PM

Maybe it has more to do w/ those teams rebuilding.

  6. bruinsfan55 - Jun 15, 2014 at 1:11 PM

This guy just doesn’t want to play under pressure. Send him to a southern US team where hockey isn’t too big.

    • jimeejohnson - Jun 15, 2014 at 3:50 PM

      Like Los Angeles!

  7. mnwildfan15 - Jun 15, 2014 at 1:25 PM

Koivu and backstrom for spezza and a 3rd

    • greatmiamisportsmind - Jun 15, 2014 at 3:12 PM

Your problem is 29 other teams don’t want Bsckstrom

  8. 19cbd87 - Jun 15, 2014 at 1:26 PM

Minnesota could use a right shot in its top six.

  9. geejon - Jun 15, 2014 at 1:30 PM

Who would want to trade legit assets for a guy who seems so mentally weak and in a year will be a UFA and be asking for a long term deal at big-time dollars? What scares me is this sounds just like the type of disaster Glen Sather usually rushes into.

    • 19to77 - Jun 15, 2014 at 1:41 PM

Because if he only has a year left on his current deal, he’s a solid one-year addition to a team on the cusp of a deep playoff run? His cap hit is $7m, actual salary is only $4m, and he had 66 points in 75 games this year. He’s a good rental player even if his trade price will be somewhat high. And hell, even if he underperforms with the team that acquires him over the summer, they’ll still be able to flip him again at the trade deadline for the same reasons.

      • homerx - Jun 15, 2014 at 2:58 PM

How much cap hit will the Richards buyout be for the Rangers? Spezza vs Richards is very close in salary dollars. $7mm vs $6.6mm I believe. If the Rangers cannot find another goal scorer I’d rent him for a year.

      • geejon - Jun 15, 2014 at 5:02 PM

The Rangers have no #1 draft picks to deal for the next 2 years. None of their minor leaguers are considered high end and thus don’t hold all that much value right now. That means they’d need to deal away players from the main squad which defeats the whole purpose of acquiring a guy because you think you’re close to a Cup.

As for dealing him at the deadline if it’s not working out for one reason or another, the Rangers would get offered crap. Look at what the Isles and Sabres got when they tried to peddle Vanek and Moulson at the deadline. They got nothing. Teams make weak take it or leave it offers for teams desperate to get anything for a guy that’s walking anyway.

  10. 67nova - Jun 15, 2014 at 1:48 PM

Really reading stuff into his list now aren’t we? If he didn’t specifically say he won’t play in Canada the argument can be made he just doesn’t want to play for a rebuilder. Way to twist his list.

  11. djshnooks - Jun 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM

The Wild need to reunite Spezza and Alfredsson with Heatley…as well as Miller and Vanek with Pominville…somehow.

That would be sick…and 2 dominant lines.

    • purpleguy - Jun 15, 2014 at 2:16 PM

Those lines would clean up in the AARP league.

    • 19to77 - Jun 15, 2014 at 2:41 PM

Those lines would be fantastic! You know, in 2006.

  12. luz56 - Jun 15, 2014 at 2:35 PM

Tells you all you need to know about his heart!…don’t trade him and let him finish career in Ottawa…

    • dueman - Jun 15, 2014 at 3:31 PM

The fact that, at 30 years old, he doesn’t want to go to a rebuilding team (like any of the 4 Canadian teams mentioned in the actual article) says absolutely nothing about the guys heart. If anything, it says that at 30 years old, he just wants to play for a team that has a chance at playing for the cup.

I feel sorry for Senator fans (well almost sorry anyways) because I am a Leaf fan that endured the Harold Ballard era. Right now Ottawa fans have Eugene Melnyk as an owner, and he is right now, the new version of Harold Ballard….the cheapest owner in the NHL.

  13. bleedrangerblue - Jun 15, 2014 at 3:33 PM

@ homerx. Lol. One stiff for another? At that cost? Spezza is done

    • 19to77 - Jun 15, 2014 at 6:34 PM

If 66 points in 75 games is “done,” about 80% of the NHL is over the hill and should be contemplating retirement.

  14. jimeejohnson - Jun 15, 2014 at 3:49 PM

He should wait till after the summer. Canada is really, really nice during the summertime, after blackfly season ends.

  15. luz56 - Jun 15, 2014 at 4:58 PM

Nobody twisted his arm into signing that big contract… Yes I question his heart and quitting on his current teammates when he still has time on his contract and wants out… Nobody deserves to play for a winner it has to be earned with 24 other guys

  16. flyboystransport - Jun 15, 2014 at 7:02 PM

    Gonna make draft day fun

  17. charlie24zz - Jun 15, 2014 at 10:20 PM

    Taxes!
