‘Maybe we’re the team that makes that blockbuster,’ says Jets GM

“Maybe we’re the team that makes that blockbuster. You always have that zest, that desire to see if there’s that elusive deal that can help you. But when you do get on the phone, you quickly find out your counterparts are trying to find that same deal. It is a difficult thing.”

That was Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff (to Sportsnet), getting our hopes up with that first part about making a “blockbuster” trade, then bringing us back to earth with the reality of the situation.

We’ve already written about the potential for a big Winnipeg trade. From April:

Expect to hear Dustin Byfuglien‘s name floated in trade rumors this summer. The Jets are plenty deep on the back end, and coach Paul Maurice already said Byfuglien will be a forward next season, despite the player’s preference to remain a defenseman. Beyond Byfuglien, the Evander Kane situation is obviously worth watching. Clearly, there’s some tension there. Whether it’s become an untenable relationship is the question.

Cheveldayoff also suggested last week that this offseason could be a busy one with respect to trades, though he was referring to the NHL as a whole.

The Jets are coming off another disappointing season in which they failed to make the playoffs for the third straight time since the franchise moved to Winnipeg.

I’ll believe it when I see it. This guy has made zero “blockbuster” moves since the Jets came back.

Chevy is a good guy (speaking from personal experience) and a great hockey mind, I’m hoping he can make a big splash for the Jets for his and their success, as long as they don’t improve enough to beat the Hawks that is. He has been a winner at many levels of hockey, which I’m sure is one of the reasons the Jets brought him in.

Chevy is a good guy so it seems but I think it will be quite sometime before the Hawks have to worry about the Jets. Especially if they’re still stuck on Pavelec!

Pavelec is 26 years old, it could still go either way in my opinion, he could take that next step, seems similar to Kari Lehtonen’s situation a few years back..he took the next step altough he’s not really elite he is a really solid good goalie

Will the Jets be the ones to land Ovechkin in a trade? Unlikely but he will get moved this offseason. I’m pretty sure. I think at least. Or have a guy feeling.

I disagree, think they are gonna knock their heads against a Washington wall a little longer considering Ovi, hope for their sakes that they turn it around though

I could see the Jets doing something this season. Now that they’ve had another coach in and have for the first time actually had a regular season to assess their team. And they’re finally adding a bit more depth to the team so they can afford to make some moves instead of just trying to move all the dead weight that they started with when the team moved.

Jets and the Wild should get together. The Wild has a lot of prospects that could help the Jets. The Jets have both Kane and Buff that would slot in really well for the Wild. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Fletch kick the tires on either or both.

I thought you were talking about a Merger.

…..or, he could always not trade 2 stars to a team not only in their coference but in their division….yeah that doesnt sound like a great idea

but here in MTL we’ll gladly give you Tokarski and pick for Kane :)

    Buff back to Chicago

Huge Av’s fan here but I have been a WPG fan since the city was left without a team and was willing to do whatever it took to get their beloved Jets back. Building MTS, websites, everything. If ever there was a city that deserved a team at least in the playoffs, it’s Winnipeg. Get a trade done for a #1 goalie. That would be a huge start. Kane and Buff are so good but I try to watch Jet’s games whenever I can and it really seems to be hit or miss with both of them as far as playing to win or phoning it in – sometimes during the same game? Noel seemed a decent enough coach, but when the new coach stepped in, it really seemed to put wind in the player’s sails (for a while anyway) Good luck to the Jets and hopefully the fans will get that big trade. (not from my AV’s though)
