Things have been quiet on the Carolina head coaching front lately, but that changed on Thursday with reports of Pittsburgh assistant Jacques Martin interviewing for the vacant position, per TVA.

Martin, 61, just wrapped his first year as Dan Bylsma’s assistant in Pittsburgh, a gig he took after years of serving as an NHL head coach. He’s had previous stops in St. Louis, Ottawa, Florida and Montreal, racking up 613 wins — 11th mosth NHL history — while guiding both the Sens and Habs to the Eastern Conference Final (in 2003 and 2010, respectively.)

The Martin interview is one of the few details to emerge from Ron Francis’ search for a new coach, his second major decision since taking over Carolina’s GM gig from Jim Rutherford. Recently, Francis said he’d like to get a coach in place prior to the 2014 NHL Entry Draft (June 27-28 in Philly), but added “it’s more important that I get the right guy than to get the decision done fast.”

Francis’ first major move as GM was dismissing ex-head coach Kirk Muller in early May, after Muller had spent three seasons on the job.
