Video: Prust nails Stepan with questionable hit, Rangers reply, Carcillo tossed

May 22, 2014, 8:50 PM EDT

There weren’t many fireworks through the first two games of the Eastern Conference Final, but the Rangers and Canadiens provided plenty in the early stages of Game 3.

The two teams combined for 22 penalty minutes before the midway point of the opening frame, all of which stemmed from this questionable hit Montreal’s Brandon Prust laid on New York’s Derek Stepan:

No penalty was called on the play, but both Stepan and his Ranger mates were livid with Prust — and it didn’t take long for Derek Dorsett and Dan Carcillo to find him:

Dorsett and Prust were given five-minute fighting majors each, while Carcillo was given a charging minor for the original hit and a game misconduct for jostling with linesman Scott Driscoll. That ended Carbomb’s night with just 1:45 TOI and the potential for suspension hanging in the balance.

As for Stepan, he left the game momentarily but returned midway through the first period.

Bad missed call. Stepan gets back, and Rangers seem to be in control 1-0. Vanek sucks, even Pierre is calling him out.

  2. drewsylvania - May 22, 2014 at 8:54 PM

    All part of Therrien’s plan.

    • cheetah440 - May 22, 2014 at 8:58 PM

He wants the Canadiens to be swept?

      • drewsylvania - May 22, 2014 at 9:26 PM

It resulted in retaliation, which gave the Habs a power play (and the added bonus of Carcillo being a complete idiot). It’s why the ploy works.

      • flyerspsu - May 22, 2014 at 10:06 PM

so the plan was for Prust to throw a high, late, blindside hit w/ the hope that the refs would miss the call causing the Rangers to be rightfully ticked off and retaliate hoping to get a power play?

Either Therrien is a genius or he had no plan, im leaning towards the latter

      • drewsylvania - May 22, 2014 at 10:52 PM

The players (even Prust) are craftier than you think.

  3. penvik - May 22, 2014 at 9:01 PM

Metro division will destroy Atlantic division any time, every time. NHL playoffs really getting boring after first 2 rounds.

    • upyourstodd - May 22, 2014 at 9:45 PM

Yeah like that Butt Whooping The Penguins put on the Bruins in last seasons ECF.

    • holymakinaw - May 23, 2014 at 12:14 AM

hey penwik…best thing for you would be to start watching golf or something else, no?

  4. titansbro - May 22, 2014 at 9:02 PM

My eyes must be playing tricks on me. I mean, Habs fans have been telling me forever how the Bruins are the only team to ever deliver a questionable hit.

    • amerika1313 - May 23, 2014 at 7:25 AM

Yes, they really must be playing tricks on you, dude. Remember, the Canadiens play the right way and don’t like it when teams or players disrespect their opponents. Just ask ‘em…

  5. bleedrangerblue - May 22, 2014 at 9:02 PM

Wow. Great game. Having fun. Go Rangers!!! Being a 40 yr Ranger fan this doesn’t happen too many times! Go Rangers!! F my neighbors !! We are clapping and screaming !!! We want the cup!!!!

  6. justinpecora50 - May 22, 2014 at 9:02 PM

Subban now a -4, Tokarski bailed him out otherwise it’s 2-0. Emelin got Price whacked in game 1 and now he’s getting beat on a regular basis, Tokarski bailed him out. WTF is Vanek doing out there???!!!! Prust late hit, no call. Only guys playing are PAC and Gallagher. MTL has 4 shots on goal, won’t get it done that way.

  7. hosewater2 - May 22, 2014 at 9:03 PM

Good thing it was Carcillo who got tossed otherwise the Rangers would be down a player.

  8. thesportsjudge - May 22, 2014 at 9:04 PM

    “Accidentally on purpose?”

  9. stakex - May 22, 2014 at 9:06 PM

I generally try not to whine about missed calls because they are part of the game, and it happens to every team. This was a bad one though, especially when you are going to call “charging” on Carcillo for a little bump during a scrum for the puck.

Either way it doesn’t really matter. Montreal decided it was going to be dirty antics night…. someone should tell them that late hits and slew foots don’t equal goals.

    • holymakinaw - May 23, 2014 at 12:21 AM

yeah, someone should tell them…oh and guys falling with feet first and skates towards the goalie too…..

  10. 7mantel - May 22, 2014 at 9:09 PM

Subban has to be the most over rated ,over hyped defenseman in the NHL.

    • holymakinaw - May 23, 2014 at 12:26 AM

yeah, you’re right…who wants PK? Good thing the Habs have him and not the Rangers eh? what a bright comment…..btw, is your first name Harvey??

  11. bleedrangerblue - May 22, 2014 at 9:09 PM

    C’mon Ranger fans speak up!!!

    • flyerspsu - May 22, 2014 at 10:11 PM

i gotta say i was disappointed in the Rangers fans during the Philly series, they would be silent the majority of the time and only until the Rangers scored would they get going, really a weak atmosphere for the playoffs

  12. kev86 - May 22, 2014 at 9:11 PM

Careful up on that horse ranger fans. Spare us the choir boy routine please.

  13. puckthehabs - May 22, 2014 at 9:12 PM

Cry about Price all you want. Habs look lost out there making lots of mistakes and Rangers capitalizing. It’s not because of the goalie you are losing.

  14. justinpecora50 - May 22, 2014 at 9:22 PM

    Another missed call…

  15. bruinsin7 - May 22, 2014 at 9:35 PM

God damnit. Thats all Bostons fault. Montreal can’t be blamed for that late hit

    • puckthehabs - May 22, 2014 at 9:38 PM

      haha…true

    • mcphillthy - May 22, 2014 at 10:17 PM

      Don’t say GD!

  16. billiam55 - May 22, 2014 at 9:45 PM

    now that was on purpose.

  17. kev86 - May 22, 2014 at 9:55 PM

No slash call to end second costs Habs another 2.minutes. Brutal.

  18. 7mantel - May 22, 2014 at 9:57 PM

Complaining about penalties is a loser mentality

  19. muckleflugga - May 22, 2014 at 10:01 PM

the hit was only dirty because it was late … a clinical takeout otherwise … stepan was pissing himself because he got caught admiring his pass

but what’s with the water in new york, rangers dropping like madonna’s panties

  20. bleedrangerblue - May 22, 2014 at 10:01 PM

    @7mantel. Thumbs up!

  21. 1337ryan - May 22, 2014 at 10:01 PM

It wasn’t a questionable hit by Prust (who I still liked until now), it was outright illegal. Stepan came back, so it might only be a 1 or 2 game suspension if the NHL is honest. I don’t complain about officiating much, but the first period’s was horrendous.

  22. bleedrangerblue - May 22, 2014 at 10:04 PM

Sorry to offend anyone. Muckle is a A hole. Loser. Retard

    • mornelithe - May 22, 2014 at 10:10 PM

Sir, you need to apologize to all A-hole, Loser, Retards out there that you’ve just insulted by associating them with that person.

  23. bcniner - May 22, 2014 at 10:08 PM

These Refs are brutal. Two penalties on Gallagher Ridiculous! Suspend Prust and we put Parros in to take someone out! Keep your head up Kris Kreider your time is coming!

  24. bleedrangerblue - May 22, 2014 at 10:08 PM

@flyerspsu. Really?? I may delete this app

  25. bleedrangerblue - May 22, 2014 at 10:10 PM

    Canada sucks !!

    • joey4id - May 22, 2014 at 10:21 PM

hehehehehe! 12 Canadians on the Rangers’ roster, and I bet none of them are packing a gun.

      • 7mantel - May 23, 2014 at 9:02 AM

        packing a gun.?

      • joey4id - May 23, 2014 at 9:12 AM

Yeah! You know… Like some of the NFL and NBA players do, and are mostly Americans.

      • 7mantel - May 23, 2014 at 9:53 AM

Wow joey , thought you were better than than that !

      • joey4id - May 23, 2014 at 10:08 AM

Take this merde lightly, 7mantel. It’s sarcasm more than anything else.

      • 7mantel - May 23, 2014 at 10:19 AM

I read your posts and some I learn a few things for instance( had to look up merde) and some I smh and then there are a some we both know i disagree with. That post it was wtf !

  26. storminator16 - May 22, 2014 at 10:23 PM

I’m slightly confused. I can see a reason for why the refs gave Carcillo a game misconduct, but why are folks thinking anything he did there is suspendable? Did I miss something?

How Prust got away with that late hit I will never know. Refs should give themselves a game misconduct and call it a night.

    • justinpecora50 - May 22, 2014 at 11:03 PM

CARBOMB got the game misconduct because he pushed the linesman after the Prust -Dorsett fight.

    • holymakinaw - May 23, 2014 at 12:35 AM

      yeah storm, you missed it…….

    • storminator16 - May 23, 2014 at 6:20 AM

Linesman’s initiated contact with the player was a bit much. He didn’t handle that situation well. I would have decked him.

  27. storminator16 - May 22, 2014 at 10:31 PM

Driscoll was a bit overzealous there. Horrible officiating.

  28. ironmd778 - May 22, 2014 at 10:37 PM

“Questionable” hit? LOL.. Yeah just a little.

  29. dolphincult - May 22, 2014 at 11:52 PM

The hit was late but it wasn’t to the head. Shoulder right in the chest. 2 minute penalty for interference was missed. They get missed all the time. Move on piss baby fans.

  30. papajack1259 - May 23, 2014 at 12:38 AM

Does anyone else get the feeling that certain calls or non calls are all part of the plan? I am not saying there fixed but…wait yeah there are things that seem blatant that just ain’t called and I wonder ?

  31. titansbro - May 23, 2014 at 7:18 AM

Uh yeah, the thing with carcillo & the linesman is on the linesman. Carcillo is standing there & jawing with someone & the linesman skates in & starts pushing on him. He wasn’t going after anyone, no need to do that. The little hand shove was reactionary.

  32. bucfanforlife - May 23, 2014 at 11:07 AM

awesome eye for an eye you hit my goalie like they did intentionally or not everyone on that team needs to look out and have your head on a swivel, lord Stanley is worth what it takes to get your name engraved forever, by the way just an old time hockey lover this is what makes the playoffs great, put the whistle away and play, real hockey that regular season crap is what it is I don’t see none of the nhls pretty high scoring boys left, the grinder warriors win the cup
