PHT Extra: Where will Trotz end up? What about Ryan Miller?

May 22, 2014, 5:33 PM EDT

We shot this video this morning, so just ignore the part about Ryan Miller being in competition with Jaroslav Halak on the free-agent market. Obviously, that’s not the case anymore. Though he’s still in competition with Jonas Hiller, so that part’s still good.

Also, I didn’t mean to suggest that winning with Alex Ovechkin is some sort of impossible task. I just meant that coaching him, and trying to get the best out of him and the Capitals, is a challenge that a guy like Barry Trotz might enjoy.

I’d have to guess Trotz to Washington, Miller to Pittsburgh.

Also, winning with or getting the most out of Ovechkin isn’t the problem in Washington… its winning with, and getting the best from, the rest of the team. Aside from one notable season, Ovechkin’s play has been fine. Its just this false narrative that whenever they lose its ALL his fault despite evidence to the contrary.

This year for example, many blamed him for their failure due to his +/-. I made a long post about this a while ago, and its been mentioned elsewhere (not here, because you guys hate Ovechkin) about how he actually had a great season this year and this was a textbook example why +/- shouldn’t even be kept as a stat. Long story short is he was only on the ice for 9 more even strength goals against than Crosby, however he had such a worse +/- because of two factors:

    1. His line mates had a 3.8% shooting percentage this season, and only scored 13 goals. Compare that to Crosby’s line mates that had a 9.2% shooting percentage and scored 39 goals.

    2. His teams goaltenders had a lackluster .905 S% when he was on the ice. Well bellow the NHL average.

Ovechkin also has 31 goals and 30 assists in 58 playoff games. Could be a bit better, but hardly why the Caps haven’t won. Again, the real issue in Washington has nothing to do with Ovechkin, its getting more from everyone not named Ovechkin….

I hear you, but just watching Ovi it is obvious that he just does not play with intensity and responsibility in his own end, or just as importantly, in the neutral zone.

he never has played great in his own and and he was never known for that. People make way too much out of +/-. He was +45 in 09-10 while playing the same defense he plays today. Not a coincidence that TEAM was twice as good as this years TEAM

these are amazing stats, thank you for enlightening me.

Pittsburgh doesn’t have the cap space for miller and nobody’s taking maf’s contract. Washington? Trotz no clue. If he was going to a team that already needs a coach he’d be there now.

Trotz will end up in Pittsburgh if he leaves Washington without a contract

  4. pitpenguinsrulez - May 22, 2014 at 7:01 PM

Sorry but I don’t want Trotz. Last I checked we weren’t Nashville. I also don’t want Miller as well. I’d rather them up Fleury for a 3 year extension that way it gives time for Jarry to develop in the minors and if Fleury has a bad performance in like 2 years hypothetically speaking and Jarrys ready then maybe you could trade Fleury.

    • capsnbohs23 - May 22, 2014 at 7:20 PM

I wouldnt want Miller either, Fleury is a solid goalie

He’s gonna end up in Van, they are re-building so it is a secure job. If they make the playoffs he will look like a hero. No coach can make Ovi use his teammates, he’s a selfish player. Not a Trotz player, way too selfish.

    • capsnbohs23 - May 22, 2014 at 10:10 PM

the good ol selfish line, that one never gets old

    • babykaby - May 23, 2014 at 2:42 AM

Alex is not a selfish player. You obviously don’t watch him play. He makes some pretty incredible passes to his linemates, it isn’t his fault they refuse to shoot the puck. That’s why Bruce used to split him and Backstrom up pretty often, because Backstrom wouldn’t shoot the puck. He just wanted to pass it. I won’t even bring up the others that have played on the line with him. Most of them couldn’t hit the side of a barn with a basketball. If Ovechkin didn’t try and score as often as he does, everyone would be up in arms about him not doing what he is paid to do. Stop listening to Milbury, JR and all the other russian haters and watch more than one or two of his games and whatever fault you find with Ovechkin, it won’t be that he is a selfish player. Unless of course, you’re an idiot.

Neither does watching Ovi try to go around 3 defenders all by himself in the post-season

    • capsnbohs23 - May 22, 2014 at 10:20 PM

you’re right, every single time he has the puck thats what he does…god i love the ovi haters, this stuff just makes my day

      • babykaby - May 23, 2014 at 2:44 AM

Canadian, so what can you expect. Not all, but a good many are russian haters. So sad.
