If Gretzky could play today, he’d ‘like to get Patrick Kane the puck’

May 21, 2014, 5:12 PM EDT

That was Wayne Gretzky on the Dan Patrick Show. If he could play today, the Great One said he’d like to play for the Chicago Blackhawks, because he’d “like to get Patrick Kane the puck…he’s a pretty good player.”

Interesting answer, since if there’s one player in today’s NHL that’s reminiscent of Gretzky, it’s probably Kane. Not the biggest or strongest guys on the ice, but both had/have a tremendous ability to dictate play with the puck, and good luck hitting them*; they just spun/spin away when pressured. (Denis Potvin once said that trying to hit Gretzky was like “wrapping your arms around fog. You saw him but when you reached out to grab him your hands felt nothing, maybe just a chill.”)

*Except if you’re Bill McCreary:

He also said that Sidney Crosby is hands-down the best player in the NHL, including goalies. Not sure why he would pick Kane to play with if that is the case.

But Sid is a center too, so maybe that was his angle.

What difference does it make? There is a greatest player in every sport, doesn’t mean one can’t want to play on the same team as another great player.

Gee, sorry to bring it up. Didn’t mean to upset you.

Kane isn’t anywhere near Gretzky. C’mon. If any player is like him it would be Crosby so this is a silly conversation.

well if wayne said crosby is the best, it must be true, his career littered with international play as it was …

you cannot not appreciate wayne as a player, but his record of a games theoretician, outside of janet’s bookmaking connections, is dubious at best … but it makes good copy and fodder for debate

there’s no best player, though there are a select group who, under ideal conditions can have world best plays in the moment, or games or seasons

the idea of who’s best is almost childlike in its construct … my dad can beat your dad lmao

overlooking ed ‘sock’ hatoum and his contribution is unforgivable regardless: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Hatoum

Its hilarious how much smarter you think you are than everyone else. Give me Toews over Crosby every single time. Here is a brain buster for you professor, in your most humble of opinions, would you say its easier to lead the league in points during the regular season and then turn into Casper when it matters, or get knocked out of the playoffs 5 years in a row by lower seeds. Hysterical you used “childlike” and “lmao” in the same sentence.
