PHT Extra: Can the Habs come back? Who should start Game 3?

May 20, 2014, 5:15 PM EDT

We discuss those questions and more, during which I coin the phrase “magic in a bottle” to describe what Montreal’s trying to capture with Dustin Tokarski.

Sure, most people call it “lightning in a bottle,” but that’s why PHT is different. We think outside the box.

Or, should I say, outside the cube.

Watching the Rangers sweep Montreal would be… Price-less!

  2. 950003cups - May 20, 2014 at 5:23 PM

No goalie. They play better 6 on 5. Probably will give up less goals.

    • barkar942 - May 20, 2014 at 10:39 PM

Hey cups- go over to the post about Harri Pesonen.

      • 950003cups - May 21, 2014 at 4:30 AM

I checked it out. Thank you for your concern.

Let’s be fair. The kid did a bang up job for the storm he was thrown into. With some solid D in front of him and not having faced the clinic Lundqvist put on, Montreal actually had a chance in that game. Can’t put that loss on him.

    • avscup - May 20, 2014 at 5:53 PM

Spot on. He made some great saves. Pacs goal was a fluke, he should have stopped Nash’s goal but it would have been a tough save and St. Louis goal was a beauty that maybe Lundquist couldn’t have saved. He did fine and if a Rangers fan thinks it’s in the bag, they are clueless and have not watched SC hockey! Anything could happen.

Rangers are playing well and look to have the upper hand but it’s far from over so yes Habs can come back. Weather they will remains to be seen.

    This one is over.

  5. 33to22 - May 20, 2014 at 5:56 PM

Not unless they bring back Patty Roy.

  6. bleedrangerblue - May 20, 2014 at 5:57 PM

The Rangers will win this series. The core group knows how it felt to lose in ECF 2 yrs ago( your welcome 950003cups). Hank will not be denied!

  7. muckleflugga - May 20, 2014 at 5:58 PM

do bears make big potty in the woods …?

of course canadiens can come back and probably will, making it a more interesting series if nothing else … talk about dullsville, sniff, all hockey and no hate, what’s up with that

rangers had the benefit of catching canadiens suffering a letdown after sending a vastly over-rated bruins team to ply their skills on winter greens, trading one set of clubs for another so it would seem lmao

away from montréal, tables will be turned when rangers play in front of a crowd that made jeering a higher form of art, turning kings into cowboys at the stroke of midnight

i see this series coming back to montrĂ©al, knotted at two then going seven … there’s just too much money to be left on the table in a shortened series

it’s all about the green in the nhl machine, always has been

    • flyersfan85 - May 21, 2014 at 1:21 AM

Nahh. Rangers in 5. Canada looks pretty weak right now..Canadians… yeah.. them..

    • infectorman - May 21, 2014 at 9:52 AM

that “vastly overrated” team beat the crap out of Montreal for 7 games.

NY should be sending brown bags of cash to Boston for beating down the Hab-nots…
Clown, they did win the Pres Cup which means according to the NHL they were the best team in the league…of course, then the playoffs happened…ugh

  8. billiam55 - May 20, 2014 at 5:59 PM

I dont think he was bad at all. The only reason canadiens lost that game was because of Henrik Lundqvist.

    • cofran2004 - May 20, 2014 at 7:07 PM

ya know, the defense did play pretty well, and the offense wasn’t all that bad either. it wasn’t ALL hank…

  9. bleedrangerblue - May 20, 2014 at 6:01 PM

@muckle as Black Label Society once said “you must be crazy or high” oh oh

  10. justinpecora50 - May 20, 2014 at 6:23 PM

I think the Rangers need to go for the jugular in Game 3, just swarm, get an early lead and deflate whatever air the Habs have left. Tokarski was good, with the exception of the 2nd goal he played ok. MTL has scored 3 goals in the series, 2 of them were off bounces and a shorthanded goal because NY was up 7-1 and screwing around with the puck in their own end. If NY can get up 1-0 or 2-0 early, curious to see how MTL reacts. This team is hungry and playing very loose, short shifts, rotating 4 lines and Hank has been nothing short of invincible. Barring an absolute collapse I just don’t see them losing the series.

Justin said it I didn’t. LGR!!

  12. joey4id - May 20, 2014 at 7:14 PM

For Habs fans it better be Price

For Rangers fans anybody but Price

Either way the do or die game was game 2. Habs are done.

    • charlie24zz - May 21, 2014 at 8:58 AM

      Okay don cherry

  13. jason9696 - May 20, 2014 at 7:38 PM

    1) No.

    2) It doesn’t matter.

  14. peepeehead - May 20, 2014 at 7:57 PM

The Rangers are getting soft. They should have taken Tokarski out in game 2.

  15. 1harrypairatesties - May 20, 2014 at 11:46 PM

blomfeld, Sale on Depends Diapers at your local grocery store for ya .

  16. flyersfan85 - May 21, 2014 at 1:17 AM

Nahh.. Let Canada have the gold medal they wanted so bad and America can keep the Stanley Cup for the next four years. Fair trade. And yes I understand all of the BS with Canadian players on American teams.. blah..blah.. whatever…

But.. I would keep Tokarski in the net. 3-1 was the score with him in net and it was 7-2 with Carey in net right. Hell by those scores I would say start Tokarski over Carey.. and yes. .I know that Carey only let in 5 of those.. blah.. blah.. look at the basic math.. 5.. 3.. I knew you could.

I know the Rangers will represent us well in the SCF. They will beat the Hawks as I count the Kings out…lets say the Rangers in 6 with the Cup… and next year I hope a loss in every game they play. Its the way of the world people..

I know I pissed a whole new echelon of people off with this comment.. and that’s great because if I wanted friends I would have given each of you a fresh Ben Franklin.. now I am just giving you reality.. and no one likes that..

    • infectorman - May 21, 2014 at 9:45 AM

      5 > 3

      Dropping the knowledge, ff85..

      keep it coming

  17. johnstone17 - May 21, 2014 at 5:51 AM

I don’t think Tokarski played badly. I also don’t think the Rangers got a lot of traffic in front of him.

  18. mrd5c - May 21, 2014 at 6:47 AM

Die-hard Rangers fan here. This series is far from over! The Rangers were down 3-1 to the Pens and got beaten soundly in game 4. Nobody gave them a chance. There’s no reason to think the Habs will just roll over. Yes, they don’t have their number one goalie. So what? We’ve all seen kid goalies break out, and this Tokarski seems to have the makings of a good goalie. Sure, it’s nice to be up 2-0, but this is not a done deal. You need to win four, and the Rangers haven’t done that yet. Also, last time I checked the series in the West isn’t over yet either. This is sports, anything can happen, and it usually does!

  19. joey4id - May 21, 2014 at 8:09 AM

Goalies can’t afford to play “not badly” in the playoffs. They have to play great. Lundqvist was great and Tokarski wasn’t bad, but he wasn’t great. He wasn’t able to keep the Habs in the game. Whoever plays in nets for the Habs has to be consistently better than Lundqvist, and only Price can do that.

AV is doing a hell of a job. Give him credit for cleaning up the mess left behind by Torts. And give credit to Sather for pulling the trigger on the St. L for Callahan trade.

  20. ironmd778 - May 21, 2014 at 8:35 AM

They’re all done. Thanks for coming.

  21. homerx - May 21, 2014 at 9:57 AM

I find it amazing that people constantly refer to the Habs having an emotional let down after beating the Bruins. The Rangers came back from 3-1 deficit vs. the Pens and they didn’t have an emotional let down, what gives.

    • cofran2004 - May 21, 2014 at 2:25 PM

what gives is people are looking for any excuse to as to why the rangers are still winning when on paper, these same people think they shouldn’t be. according to the “experts,” the rangers would have been, and I quote scott burnside here, “an underdog to any other team remaining in the playoffs.”

well, thats the way the rangers seem to like it. please keep picking against them. its working out well!
