Price out for rest of series; Therrien calls Kreider play ‘reckless’

May 19, 2014, 11:22 AM EDT

The Montreal Canadiens’ hopes of making it to their first Stanley Cup Final since 1993 have taken a huge blow. Goalie Carey Price will miss the rest of the Eastern Conference Final versus the New York Rangers, who already lead the series 1-0.

Therrien would not say who would start in goal tonight in Game 2 at the Bell Centre. His options are Peter Budaj and Dustin Tokarski, neither of whom are as effective as Price, nor have the big-game experience.

Here’s the play on which Price was injured:

Reckless, give me a break! Kreider lost an edge tried to stop and ran into price! Just bad luck wrong place wrong time! Could have happened to Hank!

    • habs1987 - May 19, 2014 at 4:00 PM

It could have and I hope it does! Don’t think that we won’t strike back! That ny attitude of entitlement has to come to an end.

      • bwayblueshirt - May 19, 2014 at 4:04 PM

That’s ridiculous. If you’re rooting for a good player to get injured than you’re not a hockey fan. I was sad to see Price go down. I was looking forward to the goalie duel.

BTW, how was the title of this article not PAYING THE PRICE?

We have a back up. You don’t…

      • dannyboy1313 - May 19, 2014 at 4:20 PM

What sense of entitlement. New York was supposed to get spanked by Pittsburgh just like your lot was supposed to get spanked by Boston.
The Montreal whining is getting insufferable.

      • homieshome - May 19, 2014 at 4:42 PM

Lol Montreal is sinking to an all new low, I swear it. And it is indeed insufferable. At first hearing comments like this, i thought it was just a few fans who are not all there but it now seems like the majority of Montreal sounds like this guy. It’s disgusting. Bunch of whiny little babies, i wish to God Price didnt get hurt so they wouldnt have the bag of excuses when we eliminate them.

You can add “classless” to the list of PHT Hab fan attributes.

      • bigbadbruins68192 - May 19, 2014 at 5:39 PM

        call 911

    • pxf3030 - May 19, 2014 at 5:30 PM

Sorry Rangers fans. Now you have to deal with the insufferable, entitled, cry baby Montreal fans. Get used to it. I am surprised they didnt call 911 on Kreider. Any moron could see Kreider was thrown off balance when Markov hit his skates. For gods sakes, look at the play. He was falling back way before he hit the goalie. He does what any good hockey player would do….go to the net as aggressively as possible. Oh, according to Montreal fans, he is suppose to turn away or stop from a scoring chance….right..just like the canadian would… I said..GET USE TO IT NY RANGERS FANS… is only the beginning. Go rangers!

  2. xaile94 - May 19, 2014 at 1:31 PM

Here’s the thing, I don’t think the manner in which Kreider slid in made any difference. I don’t think it was his skates that did the damage. You can see Price’s right skate blade hit the post, then the heel slides up the post, twisting his right leg in a counter-clockwise direction. Should’ve taken him out of the game at that point.

  4. laughernyc - May 19, 2014 at 1:42 PM

The suggestion that Kreider was trying to hit Price is absurd. The guy was interfered with on two breakaways that didn’t get called penalty shots and should have. The play where he hit Price was an OBVIOUS penalty shot, and for anyone to complain is just total crap. He is just too fast for Montreal, and they have to interfere with him any way they can. His feet were hit from both sides, and he went flying. There was no penalty, because they knew the only call was a penalty shot, and the refs weren’t about to give a PS in Montreal. How does he wind up with both feet in the air? Because his feet were hit from behind. A little later he showed what happens when no one can put a cheap shot on him on a breakin an buried the winner.

The whining is starting already. Sounds like Pittsburgh. Getting Kreider back was the key to that series comeback, and I believe the Habs are setting up excuses to try to do to him what they did to Brassard. How in God’s name you call that a clean hit is beyond me. He’s looking the other way, the puck is long gone, he’s in open ice, and he gets leveled with a high shoulder hit that was totally cheap, and clearly intended to injure him.

I personally am GLAD Price got hurt. We may be playing with one of our best clutch playoff forwards out or at 50% thanks to an absolutely purposeful cheap shot headhunt hit. Prust should be suspended for what he did to Kreider in front of the net. This is supposed to be hockey. Montreal should just take responsibility for tripping up Kreider and causing the injury to Price.

Montreal is supposed to be a class organization. They sure didn’t act like it. What about the attempt to injure McDonough along the boards? Hold his stick and punch him. Pull his stick back as he tries to skate away to expose his face and neck and hit him again. Clearly an attempt to injure him. Another suspension due. And the refs just let it all go, until it got out of control at the end of the game.

It may be Montreal can rally behind their bullcrap cries of injustice, which is laughable. I just hope they play hockey — the kind of fast-paced, open, flowing gorgeous game that this series should be, and the refs keep the calls even. These re two really skilled teams. Sorry Price is out. Next time there’s a breakaway, trust your Vezina goalie to step up, and don’t put his safety at risk by tripping a guy into him. I’ve been watching opposing players run Lundquist for five years. I men RUN him, including an amazing play where he got flattened in the trapezoid last year in the playoffs and there was no call. If Montreal runs him now, we could call up McIlrath and have him and Dorsett take out Montreal’s skill players. I hear Dom Moore can fight like hell too.

I hate to see it end this way for the Habs. Such a shame because they could have made it to the end. However it is nice to see Montreal be competitive again.

    • homieshome - May 19, 2014 at 1:55 PM

Well said, but at the same time, they’re still in this. Obviously he’s a huge part of that team but I think it’s worth saying that they’re still in this.

    • habs1987 - May 19, 2014 at 4:02 PM

We are not out yet! ny will get theirs.

      • drewsylvania - May 19, 2014 at 5:28 PM

    • dannyboy1313 - May 19, 2014 at 4:18 PM

They’re done already? Nice faith you have…

  6. drewsylvania - May 19, 2014 at 1:49 PM

Can the non-idiot Habs fans on here please raise their hands?

    • drewsylvania - May 19, 2014 at 5:28 PM

      No takers?

  7. homieshome - May 19, 2014 at 1:52 PM

I am very sorry about this. It’s a bummer. Maybe to some small degree, it was reckless, but it was not intentional. Kreider was too close to Price when it happened, hardly had any time to react and if he did, i doubt he’d slam into the pipes. He could’ve been hurt as well, especially just coming back from an injury
    Go Rangers

    • habs1987 - May 19, 2014 at 4:05 PM

Screw the rangers and their uncivil behavior, not only at this game but when they played the Pens. Don’t act like everyone on that stale team is a saint.

        Suck it up, Buttercup…

  8. kangarooparm - May 19, 2014 at 2:05 PM

It’s incredibly futile to judge intent to injure on a play where somebody was slashed (should have minimally been a 2 minute minor) and lost their edge. Early 90’s Adam Graves breaks Super Mario’s wrist in the playoffs, now that was intent to injure and i’m a NYR fan. Silly to debate on this one. But we can all agree that Kreider is an animal.

  9. homieshome - May 19, 2014 at 2:22 PM

WOW. It is totally understandable to be upset, I can imagine if it were Hank. But some of you Montreal fans are such low-class pigs.

The exaggeration has reached it’s limits, i’m done hearing about anymore of this. It was unintentional, take your goggles off.

    • drewsylvania - May 19, 2014 at 2:48 PM

Some? Where are the ones who aren’t?

    • habs1987 - May 19, 2014 at 4:12 PM

How the hell are we pigs? ny fans of any sport act like they are entitled to anything they seek! What on earth did Habs’ fans do that makes us “low-class pigs”? Don’t get pissy because your stale goalie choked at the Olympics. This is not the time or the place for revenge (and no, I don’t have anything against Swedes because I’m a huge fan of Erik Karlsson). The premeditated “accidents” that rangers players are making is sickening and foul. Why couldn’t they play on equal terms instead of injuring our star player? And don’t tell us you are tired of hearing about this. Anytime something happens in that city the whole world has to hear about it for months on end. Get out of your bubble and realize that you all aren’t puritans.

Don’t stand in your tears. You might get electrocuted.

      • manhattanraised - May 19, 2014 at 4:54 PM

LMAO. now the cheap shots @ lundqvist showing YOUR BITTERNESS. Thankfully hank’s knee isn’t all torn up like that scrub price. who was ASS for the period & a half he was healthy. Your team is doomed. because they suck defensively. & Scrub had to pay the Price. Get over it. Inferiority complex at its finest

      • homieshome - May 19, 2014 at 4:54 PM

Habs1987, Dude just do yourself a favor and stop commenting. You’re an embarrassment to hockey fans everywhere.

      • drewsylvania - May 19, 2014 at 5:23 PM

        What do Habs fans do?

Leave their brain cells at home.

  10. peepeehead - May 19, 2014 at 2:27 PM

The Lightning should loan Montreal Ben Bishop for the rest of the playoffs. Hahahahahaha, j/k! Rot in heII Montreal, ROTFLMAO!!!

  11. infectorman - May 19, 2014 at 2:43 PM

    ————–Hockey Karma—————–

Hockey Gods are penalizing Montreal for their fans obnoxious, idiotic posts on PHT.
    It really is that simple.

Just a game or two late, or we could’ve had a real series: Boston vs. NY
Oh well, can’t win em all

The NHL would like to thank the Montreal Canadiens for participating in the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs.

    • habs1987 - May 19, 2014 at 4:15 PM

We are passionate and nothing else. At least we aren’t xenophobes or uncouth.

        You forgot “idiots”.

    • dannyboy1313 - May 19, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Maybe one of the other Canadian teams can bring the Cup back tomCanada this year.

  12. pfhockey - May 19, 2014 at 3:20 PM

Now those arrogant Habs fans know what the bolts feel like. Except we went from a top 3 goalie to one of the worst.

    • homieshome - May 19, 2014 at 4:56 PM

Lol good point.. Well, i wouldnt say Bishop is a top 3 goalie but yeah he’s pretty damn good so i get the point.

      • pfhockey - May 20, 2014 at 12:36 AM

i just meant top 3 goalie for this season. Stole games like crazy.

  13. justinpecora50 - May 19, 2014 at 3:30 PM

That really is an ignorant comment, but I’ve some your posts so I’m not surprised!

  14. justinpecora50 - May 19, 2014 at 3:34 PM

Montreal fans should be killing Emelin instead of Kreider. First he misses his check and then he slashes the guy. I’m sorry Price got hurt, but it’s more incidental contact than anything else. Brandon Prust is just doing what a 4th liner that bangs is supposed to do, on and off the ice.

  15. oneil1234 - May 19, 2014 at 4:13 PM

Stupid habs fans gonna try and charge him for assault now lol bunch of drama queens. K Beckers are stupid

  16. chrisk61 - May 19, 2014 at 4:20 PM

if the habs have any short ones, which i think they do, they will try to return the favor to lundqvist with that cheesey swedish V. and then the icing on the cake will be to let kreider know in no uncertain terms his hit on price was unacceptable.

    • drewsylvania - May 19, 2014 at 5:25 PM

      Troll account.

  17. getadealdonealready - May 19, 2014 at 4:58 PM

    Everything about this stinks!

  18. bbk1000 - May 19, 2014 at 5:23 PM

I understand them being upset…but I’m wondering where this comes from……Price is Canadian…..the coach (Michel???) is Canadian….the team/fans seem to care as much about where the players are born as to how the team performs….

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised….years of rooting for a team, and not the nationality of the players must have blinded me….

Canada, we lost guarantee on baseball and basketball a while back….

  19. rangerdisabrickwall - May 20, 2014 at 5:26 AM

Canadiens fans kill me. NY fans low class? I ‘ve been in NYC my entire adult life. I have seen the Mets win, Yanks win 5x, Rangers win, and Giants win 4x, not to mention numerous trips to the finals with those teams and the Knicks. Never I mean Never have I witnessed NY fans act like animals, burn the city and riot after any of these like the Habs fans have done. Watch the play, he had his skate taken out, if that were Crosby he would have been given a penalty shot
