Report: Flyers’ Gustafsson signs in KHL (Updated)

From our friends at CSN Philly:

Erik Gustafsson won’t be returning to the Flyers next season. The 25-year-old defenseman signed Friday with Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League, according to an report.

Gustafsson played in just 31 games this past season — and oftentimes was a healthy scratch. He tallied two goals and eight assists in those games, and also scored in the Flyers’ Game 6 win over the Rangers.

Gustafsson was a pending restricted free agent on a crowded Philly blue line. The undrafted Swede was signed by the Flyers out of college (Northern Michigan) in 2010.

Damn…I was looking forward to seeing his speed full time next season. He’s probably not going to be anything more than a 3rd MAYBE 2nd pairing guy but he’s a lot faster than almost all Flyers dmen. Hopefully he’ll come back in a few years and be a much better player after getting regular minutes in the KHL.

He was never going to be a #1 D man, but with his speed (at least he LOOKS fast compared to the other D) he was nice to have on the ice as a third pairing option. They way they dicked him around though I don’t blame him.

Couldn’t beat out messzaros for the 6th d spot. Was never gonna make it here. Best of luck

It’s seemed that Berube didn’t take to him. I don’t blame him for moving on

He was a lot better than the coaching staff gave him credit for, i mean hall gill got the nod over him for game 5 before he scored in game 6, whenever he played it was clear how much of an impact his speed and skill had, just look at his advanced stats, when he was on the ice the flyers outchanced their opponents, he was probably better than Grossman and schenn IMO, I can’t blame him for the decision

Speed and skill matter little to the Flyers on D. All they need are big guys with a “big” shot, fists of steel and heads of granite.

What skill? He was as much of a turnover machine when he was pressured as Matt carle was. Can he skate, yes? He has weak outlet passes, no shot from the point and got beat defensively. He’s been given several opportunities to play top 6 and never panned out
