Hollywood ending: Kings complete another series comeback with Game 7 win over Ducks

May 16, 2014, 11:50 PM EDT

Hockey’s version of the Freeway Series goes to the L.A. Kings, as they completed yet another series comeback against a California rival in these Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Kings defeated the Anaheim Ducks by a final score of 6-2 on Friday, taking the second-round series in seven games.

Once again, the Kings were facing elimination, after falling behind the Ducks three-games-to-two, but fought back to force a deciding game before completely overpowering Anaheim when it mattered the most.

It wasn’t quite as impressive as falling behind the San Jose Sharks 3-0 in the first round, before winning the next four games to take that series in historical fashion.

The Kings, in these playoffs, have gone through a few trends now: They lost three in a row to San Jose, then won four straight to close that series out. Then, they won the first two games of this series against the Ducks, before losing three in a row. They’re back to a two-game winning streak, as they now turn their attention to the Chicago Blackhawks.

It’s a rematch of the 2013 Western Conference Final, which the Blackhawks advanced from in their championship season. L.A. is off to the conference finals for a third straight year.

But the Kings-Ducks Game 7 was, for a few anxious moments late in the second period and into the third, was a blowout. The Kings jumped out to an early lead thanks to Justin Williams and his sixth goal in six career Game 7s.

The Kings, up 3-0 at the conclusion of the opening period on goals from Williams, Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, increased their lead to four goals early in the second period, ending 20-year-old rookie goalie John Gibson’s evening.

    Game Over

    • kaptaanamerica - May 17, 2014 at 12:51 AM

Here’s to L.A. beating the snot out of the Hawks. I hope Toes is exposed for what he and the Hawks are… frauds from a shortened season…

      • r8rbhawk - May 17, 2014 at 1:25 AM

It will be interesting to see what happens when the Hawks push LA to the brink of elimination; the team that always closes vs the team that won’t die. I don’t expect your hopes and dreams will come true, but I guess we’ll see over the next two weeks.

As far as your “frauds” comment, 2 cups in 4 years and 4 conference finals in 6 years doesn’t seem very fraudulent to me.

      • kaptaanamerica - May 17, 2014 at 6:05 AM

Ok we’ll see. You’re right it doesn’t look fraudulent, but it is.

      • hammerhead5573 - May 17, 2014 at 7:40 AM

Hey r8bhawk. All you need to know about this clown is he is a Nucks fan. A team full of frauds.. Next!

      • slysipops - May 17, 2014 at 9:29 AM

if you had half the backbone of TOEWS you couldn’t fit under your rock !

      • kaptaanamerica - May 17, 2014 at 5:59 PM

LOLS and more lols…. the Nux proved TOES was a fraud when they spanked the so-called reigning cup champs.

They should be happy they didn’t face the Nux in the first round last season, it would have been the same result.

So you know. The Nux beat them the last time they met in a series….

Go Kings, now that they are hopefully facing a semi-healthy Kings team and not one playing on fumes, the Kings should pound them into submission.

      • blomfeld - May 17, 2014 at 11:47 PM

        Well said friend !

there’s a ‘reason’ why Chicago’s SC championship had an asterisk placed beside it eh ? :)

      • blomfeld - May 17, 2014 at 11:56 PM

        Comrade Kapitan America …

also don’t forget that this year we Kings will arrive to the field of battle ‘ready & able’ like never before ! … last year’s campaign involved an initial ‘taxing’ bout beforehand with those ‘Planet of the Apes’ primates from Saint Louis, which left us tired and depleted before the show even started … not the case this year however eh ? :)

        GO KINGS !!! … CRUSH CHICAGO !!! … CRUSH KANE & TINSEL TOEWS !!!!!!!!

  2. bruceboudreauchokejob - May 16, 2014 at 11:52 PM

I really like Coach Boudreau but his game 7 record speaks for itself. Great regular season coach, comes up small in the playoffs

    • thefutureofoil - May 17, 2014 at 12:54 AM

      Could become the Pens coach!

  3. r8rbhawk - May 16, 2014 at 11:56 PM

Really enjoyed the series boys. Wish the Ducks could have started stronger this game just so it would have been closer. SoCal should be grateful to have these two teams to watch. Kings fans…are you ready for a rematch? This Kings team looks better than last year, Quickie is on fire and the offense is firing on all cylinders. Should be a helluva series. Good Luck.

  4. Professor Fate - May 16, 2014 at 11:59 PM

All us Kings fans are hoping the team has those long listless periods out of their blood. If they spot Chicago three freebies the WCF will be over quickly.

  5. blomfeld - May 17, 2014 at 12:02 AM

I’M FALLING IN LOVE TONIGHT !

PS to Bettman: Tucker is ‘not’ a communist and Seattle should be awarded a franchise asap ! :)

      • slysipops - May 17, 2014 at 2:47 PM

@PARASOLMONSTER ( ? ) again i am me and only me ! what is the problem with you people who think me and BLOMFELD are the same person ? is your life that boring that you have to find something to hype it up ? well anyway 007 good luck finding proof to your theories. maybe MISS HONEYPENNY can aid you in some way ?

      • parasolmonster - May 17, 2014 at 4:03 PM

The odd insertion of a space before each punctuation mark. The ellipses. The constant use of jamming the caps lock button to stress certain words. Constantly dropping retro music and movie references. If you two aren’t the same person, consider me creeped out by how much you imitate each other.

      • slysipops - May 18, 2014 at 2:45 PM

@parasol ……we just happen to both be classy guys i guess !

  6. jpat2424 - May 17, 2014 at 12:18 AM

Boston get a clue. Ducks very respectful. Teemu you rock. Ducks and there fans rock. Class act by Kings players. Very impressed. But go Hawks.

    • 1981titan - May 17, 2014 at 12:51 AM

As a Duck fan I have to compliment the Kings players for a classy move to stay on the ice for the ovation for Teemu. Too bad the Ducks didn’t show up for the game.

  7. c9castine - May 17, 2014 at 12:19 AM

boudreau set this team up for failure.

didnt pick a starting goalie going into the playoffs, and then end up with john gibson when your already into a 2nd round series. hes the best goalie in the system but for crying out loud hes a 20 year old kid. your starter is jonas hiller.

it didnt take much talking for the Kings to get inside his head.

bruce has a habit of this and i said last week this would be the reason they lost.

    • paulerhythm - May 17, 2014 at 9:58 AM

I said the same thing. You play your starter and ride him, like the Kings did. I said this would go to 6 or 7 games because of the Ducks talent and depth. I also said they’d lose because of goaltending, as Quick is a big game goalie vs Hiller. The audacity of the Ducks to put a game 7 pressure on a kid goalie was their downfall.

  8. muckleflugga - May 17, 2014 at 12:30 AM

whoa ho hoa, what’s with our man r8rbhawk, that’s pretty deep stuff, truly a labour of love … i yield i yield –hawks fan and lover of william wordsworth by every indication lmao

so there you go blommer, revenge, a dish best served cold, gotta love it kid

i understand canucks30 has promised something special for you, due two nights back but who knows, lithium can be so fickle … keep your backside to the wall when he’s in the room

your in-tough against chicago my friend, even with intervention from your upstairs border … hawks may shoot your lights out, but who knows, quickie’s been robbin’ them blind

    • blomfeld - May 17, 2014 at 1:24 AM

“your in-tough against chicago my friend” ? …

Au contraire my esteemed colleague from Fort Calgary. You see, the Blackhawks haven’t the nature for war. Their parasitic ‘mid-western’ laziness combines with their Oprah-esque voluptuousness, with the result being that they would rather eat and make love with their faces than fight.

Executive Summary: Chicago will ‘make way’ for a King’s Army on the march !

      I’m a KINGS fan.

Toews is in the argument for the BEST Player in the WORLD!!!

(Kane amazingly Clutch Goal Scorer, but Toews offense and defense makes him more complete)

      TOEWS better than KOPITAR. Today…

If Kopitar can lead KINGS to series victory over Toews and Hawks….

Then we can talk about KOPI being better than Toews.

      Long Way to go!

p.s. But looking forward to it.

Proud to be a KINGS FAN!!!!

      Win or Lose….

      GKG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • aldog83 - May 17, 2014 at 2:43 AM

TOEWS might be the BEST IN THE WORLD right now….

Even after beating Sharks and Ducks….HAWKS are the toughest test yet!!!

Kings KOPITAR will have to eliminate TOEWS and the Hawks to even start to consider Kopi > Toews……

      But….Looking forward to it!!!

Proud to be a KINGS FAN!!! (What more could you ask for as a sports fan…A team that refuses to LOSE!!)

      GKG!!!!

      • johnmr12 - May 17, 2014 at 6:40 PM

I know exactly what you mean. I have been a kings fan since 1978 and I have never been more proud of a team than I am of this group that has been together for 3 seasons. Win or lose, you know they will never quit. That sounds so ridiculous to say. I mean, who would ever quit? Well, this league is full of teams that fold up when things get tough. The best example is the penguins. Loaded with skill, lacking heart and determination. They fired the GM, which makes sense I suppose since he brought that type of player to Pittsburgh. They will probably fire the coach, but he isn’t a heart surgeon. He can’t make them be what they aren’t.

Proud to be the owner of a Williams Jersey. Best of luck to Teemu in his future endeavors as well.

Western Conference Finals rematch, let’s get it done this time!

    • slysipops - May 17, 2014 at 9:36 AM

THUMBS UP except the last the last 6 words ! GO HAWKS GO !

  13. titansbro - May 17, 2014 at 8:30 AM

This series should be sick & I picked the Kings to go to the SCF in my work bracket. That said, the B’hawks are on another tear & Kane is up to usual tricks (scoring game winners). I’ll stick with my work bracket & go with the Kings but it’s not a confident pick.

  14. paulerhythm - May 17, 2014 at 10:06 AM

You all realize that the Hawks are defending Cup champs and they are a great team. They, like the Kings, are winners and know how to get it done. And Crawford is a big time goalie and for whatever reason, does not get his props for it. Allow me to be the 1st to say, Crawford is an excellent goalie and he could be the difference in this series!

  15. aldog83 - May 17, 2014 at 10:54 AM

Kings could use depth of Mitchell and Reghyr in this series.

  16. potzrebie - May 17, 2014 at 12:08 PM

    Jezuzz!! They’re STILL playing hockey???????

  17. slysipops - May 17, 2014 at 2:59 PM

a small band of investigators has been assembled to find out if …..BLOMFELD & SLYSIPOPS are one and the same person. if the results show no proof connecting the two, may we please let it rest for once and for all ?…………………….

  18. slysipops - May 17, 2014 at 3:11 PM

as we all wait in anticipation for 3:00 pm eastern time SUNDAY ….. a little jingle to calm you down……….OR MAKE YOU NERVOUS IF A KINGS FAN !………………

    • slysipops - May 17, 2014 at 3:16 PM

yeah, i know a few of the guys are not on the roster anymore, but they wished to be included for old time sakes ! they knew their counterparts would do the team proud !

  19. hseeley2 - May 17, 2014 at 4:57 PM

As I watched the game progress last night and cringed at the heavy hits played on a few unfortunate Kings players, I had a feeling the Ducks would lose because it seemed their minds were more on hitting than playing hockey. I know the hits are an important part of the game but when you make big hits like the Ducks did and LA didn’t get rattled, I think that got into the Ducks heads. GKG

    • johnmr12 - May 17, 2014 at 6:42 PM

I have always thought the hits stat is insignificant. If you are out hitting the opponent, they have the puck more than you do.
