Video: Brian Boyle gives Rangers an early lead

May 13, 2014, 7:53 PM EDT

It’s usually a big deal to score the first goal of any game. That’s been especially true in the second round of this postseason and with the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins; the team that managed a 1-0 lead won the first six games of his second-round series.

If that pattern holds true, then the Rangers are in good shape. Brian Boyle capped an odd-man rush with a goal to put the Rangers up 1-0, a lead they’re carrying into the first intermission:

PHT’s Joe Yerdon is on the scene. He believes that some big names for Pittsburgh failed to backcheck properly:

That play was baller status by BB

An absolute terrible start to the most important game of their season by the Pens, and atrocious coaching by Bylsma. What the heck is this guy thinking?

He doesn’t start with his best players. Why is Malkin not on the starting line up with 87 & 14? Their first rush ends with an offside. Next play is a giveaway by Maata in the neutral zone.

Rangers get called on the icing and Bylsma takes the Crosby line off the ice and comes back with Goc Adams Vitale. What is that about?

After the next icing call against the Rangers Bylsma again doesn’t come back with his best players.

All this in the first 4 minutes of the game. You’re at home and want to get the crowd in the game early, and more importantly you want the ever so important first goal.

After next icing against the Rangers he comes back Sutter Crosby Stempniak Is Bylsma losing it?

14 mistakes on the goal and MAF again doesn’t make the big stop.

Pens are on the PP and they get called on the offside, and then Neal gets a penalty.

Bylsma has to go…………. Very bad first period in a do or die game!

Crosby and Malkin should be on the ice together, and for 27 or 29 minutes if not more for this game. AV is out coaching Bylsma. If Bylsma doesn’t play 14 87 71, then they don’t have a chance.

Good pickup Joe, it definitely looks like they were gliding back into their defensive zone.

SHUT UP PIERRE YOUR SO ANNOYING !

  6. joey4id - May 13, 2014 at 8:44 PM

I picked the Rangers to win and I’m a fan of neither team. However, we’re seeing thus far an abysmal performance by the Pens. At least play and coach like it’s a do or die game, and for Bylsma it’s a career defining moment and he’s not looking good right now. I don’t expect MAF will be able to shut the door for the remainder of the game, and beating Lundqvist is not going to be easy. It starting to look like tee time for the Pens, and the walker papers for Bylsma.

Never thought it possible but the obnoxiousness of certain PITT fans have turned me into a New York fan.
    Sincerely,
The vast majority of Bruins fans.

    # Go Rangers!

Please???? Look in the mirror troll. Nothing more annoying than pompous, arrogant Boston fans who think they’re above everyone else with their Tom “He Touched Me” Brady attitudes.

  9. joey4id - May 13, 2014 at 8:57 PM

Malkin TOI so far is 14.32
Crosby TOI so far is 12.16

Both of these guys TOI should be much higher. Pathetic coaching.

    • killerpgh - May 13, 2014 at 9:20 PM

Crosby’s ice time should be less than Malkin. Malkin is flying. I don’t have inside info like you and your lockout “sources” but my sources says Crosby needs a back procedure from a screwed up disk than happened in from a hit in earlyApril/late March (Jets game, I think). But if he is good enough to dress he needs to be an impact player.

Still 14 minutes to go in this game. Someone, anyone needs to step up here. Penguins are down by 1. The SCF last year showed us it only takes 17 seconds to score twice and win the game.

Crosby said he was healthy….. note: this information is not from any sources, but readily available via the internet. ;-)

Mr. High and Wide scores a beauty of a goal on Beach Ball Fleury. Not for nothing, but Boyle is one of the most hard working character guys on the Rags. Good for him.

Laugh out loud (and not a Philly or ranger fan). That’s a remarkable 2014 by coach Dan.

  14. 7mantel - May 13, 2014 at 9:47 PM

Where is the Pen fan who asked What is Lundquvist the King of when they were down 3 games to 1 ? answer = KING OVER THE PEN’S

Could not be more happy for the Rangers and their fans, and thank you for removing that massive little girl Cindy and their sad little city fans from the playoffs!.. Syd is always committing a-hole moves on the ice, starting fights, then letting his teammates stand up for him. Hope you enjoy watching the rest of the playoffs from your tiny speck city with your Yinzer loser fans. Ever wonder why every other team and their fans all pull against you and your scum bag moves Syd?… Congrats to the Rangers, two 7 game series in a row and you still have to face Habs or Bean town, great work eliminating the most annoying and despicable team in hockey.
