NHL hands Lundqvist fine for spraying Crosby

New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist will have the open up his wallet after spraying Sidney Crosby with the contents of his water bottle during Game 6 on Sunday.

The NHL announced that he has been fined $5,000 over the incident, which occurred at the end of the second period. Lundqvist played coy when the issue was brought up later.

“I always squirt it when I go off the ice,” Lundqvist said. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

This comes after Boston’s Shawn Thornton was told to cough up $2,820.52 for spraying Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban.

Crosby speared New York’s Dominic Moore during the same contest, but appears to have avoided a fine or suspension.

The Rangers won Sunday’s contest 3-1 to force a Game 7 on Tuesday.

BS. Fine ‘em both or fine no one. But I forgot. Cindy is Bettman’s illegitimate love child, and must be protected. I mean, what if he’d melted?

    • 7mantel - May 12, 2014 at 8:51 PM

      What a joke !

      • hockey412 - May 13, 2014 at 8:16 AM

I know! They should have suspended Hank for tonights game!

      • 7mantel - May 13, 2014 at 8:18 AM

Along with Sid before he punches someone else in the jewels !

      • hockey412 - May 13, 2014 at 9:15 AM

        I’d actually make that trade.

      • dwadholm - May 13, 2014 at 9:46 AM

You know that the hockey gods will make Crosby pay on the ice.

      • 7mantel - May 13, 2014 at 10:13 AM

Another loss and an early exit would be ok in my book ! With the way the NHL has dealt with Sid is a total disgrace !

    • billiam55 - May 12, 2014 at 8:54 PM

it really is questionable. crosby gets away with a hit to the groin but they charge lundqvist 5,000 bucks for the stupid water bottle incident AFTER play was over?

      • bwayblueshirt - May 12, 2014 at 9:01 PM

How could they even tell? Maybe Crysby just teared up after the big bad wanger knocked his widdle butt down?

      • mornelithe - May 13, 2014 at 6:31 PM

I was kinda shocked at the amount myself, I thought Thornton’s water incident was far more egregious on multiple levels. Play was still live, could’ve gotten someone hurt, and he was on the bench.

I thought Lundqvist (and Crosby), should’ve been fined. But, I didn’t think Lundqvist’s should’ve been more than Thornton’s. I wonder if being coy after the fact, can account for the discrepancy.

      • mornelithe - May 13, 2014 at 6:43 PM

I guess pre-emptively before some douchebag down below has to be a dick about it, Lundqvist makes more money than Thornton, fines scale. Learned something new today.

    • stakex - May 12, 2014 at 9:11 PM

Not only that but Lundqvist essentially did the same thing Thornton did, but was fined nearly twice as much.

In fact, one could argue that what Lundqvist did wasn’t as bad. He sprayed Cindy during a scum after the play, after Cindy speared one of the Rangers. Thornton sprayed Subban from the bench (which itself make his incident worse), while the play was occurring on the ice.

So not only does it seem strange that Crosby doesn’t get a fine, but obviously offenses committed against him are worth a more serious punishment.

      • killerpgh - May 12, 2014 at 9:21 PM

You are usually a pretty smart guy. A Penguins hater, but you do make some sense sometimes. You really can’t figure out why Thornton (1.1 million salary) and Lundqvist (5.125 million salary this year) didn’t get the same fine? Here is a hint. The CBA.

      • stakex - May 12, 2014 at 10:28 PM

Indeed you are correct killerpgh, my bad.

I was actually unaware that fines scaled based on salary. Considering that the fines are so insignificant when compared to even the lowest paid NHL players salary, I wouldn’t have thought a scale system would be needed. You learn something new every day I guess.

This is so freaking idiotic. I hope all your conspriacy questions have been answered. Jesus.

      • c9castine - May 13, 2014 at 11:26 AM

dumbas, because henrik makes way more money than thornton.

this post sums a lot of things up for you and “your crowd”.

    • hockey412 - May 13, 2014 at 8:15 AM

Honestly there is so much whining on this site. SO MUCH WHINING.

Do you not think the league took a close look at it, and thought about a fine for Crosby, if for nothing else than to shut all the whining down? The Lucic spears and Crosby spears were completely different, especially when Moore was holding Crosby’s stick between his legs. BELIEVE me I’m sure they took a look – and what would Crosby even care if they fined him? It’s JUST A FINE.

I think they should have gotten Hank with a third man in penalty. GONE. (No I don’t really think that but as long as we’re all being idiots, I figured I’d throw some ideas around).

      • comeonnowguys - May 13, 2014 at 9:12 AM

        You are whining about whining!

Wait, now I’m whining about whining about whining.

        …I’m going back to bed.

      • hockey412 - May 13, 2014 at 9:17 AM

In honor of this conversation, I think we should all switch drink wine instead of beer for tonights game.

        Pinky’s up, boys.

        Thanks

      • jayt123123 - May 13, 2014 at 11:43 AM

Gary Bettman and the league are crooked thugs. Henrik gets fined for squirting water on Crosby, but Crosby got NOTHING for slashing Henrik several times, Crosby got nothing for spearing Moore, and nothing for slew footing Girardi. Squirting water never concussed or hurt anyone. Spearing, slashing and Slew Footing has caused many injuries including concussions. If the league did not show special treatment for the crybaby, then he would be fined and would receive a match penalty for the slew foot on Girardi which is mandatory according to the rules. The NHL is a joke and they wonder why viewership is so low.

      • hockey412 - May 13, 2014 at 12:05 PM

        viewership is low?

      • mdnjdevil - May 13, 2014 at 2:07 PM

Sure. And Crosby wasn’t skating away only to come back and begin cross checking those that were on top of the dog pile.

Just admit that Crosby has been a frustrated, whining, dirty mess thesewhole playoffs. And don’t forget that you are not getting the total NHL experience until some team gets under the Penguin’s skin in the playoffs.

      • hockey412 - May 13, 2014 at 2:47 PM

It’s game 7, bud…cool your jets. The Pens have earned their wins, and NYR have earned theirs. Lots of dirty stuff in that scrum, starting with Moore. The boys stick up for themselves, and one another. You seem to be of the “the Pens are a skill team so they aren’t allowed to stick up for themselves” mindset, whereas I am not. So there’s really no way to agree on that. Crosby skated back because he saw Kunitz jumped in for him, which I don’t think was his intent. It was ugly, but there were two teams in that dogpile, not just Crosby’s. Don’t act like it was all on him.

    • miketoasty - May 13, 2014 at 9:10 AM

As a Pens fan, I couldn’t agree more with this, the problem is that apparently spearing is an okay thing now in the NHL. Watching the end of the Boston vs Montreal game last night I believe it was Markov who speared someone just like Crosby did, if that goes unpunished then everyone has their answer. If he get’s a fine but Crosby doesn’t, well that does shed some light on the situation, doesn’t it?

      • mdnjdevil - May 13, 2014 at 2:05 PM

I think that we see more of this type of behavior in the playoffs because no one wants to take a fighting major and possibily a subsequent penalty in retaliation. Spearing, slashing, etc., can fly right under the radar of the refs if done at the right time.

  2. 7mantel - May 12, 2014 at 8:50 PM

OK Pen fans tell me how the NHL does not favor the Pen’s and Sid

    • killerpgh - May 12, 2014 at 9:10 PM

Can you name a team that has more suspensions/fines than the Penguins over the past 3 seasons? That doesn’t equal preferential treatment to me, but what do I know…..

      • bsfan77 - May 12, 2014 at 9:14 PM

What do you know…spear to the balls is a fine. But it is no show golden boy so it is ok. What a joke.

      • 7mantel - May 12, 2014 at 9:24 PM

        2 IN 2013 / 2014 so I guess you don’t know. Should have more than 2

      • bsilver99 - May 12, 2014 at 9:33 PM

answer: you have James Neal and Brooks Orpik, makes perfect sense and yes you get preferential treatment for crybaby, geno and letang

      • killerpgh - May 12, 2014 at 9:48 PM

Since the 2011-12 season the Penguins have been fined/suspended 13 times.

      • 7mantel - May 12, 2014 at 9:55 PM

Flyers had more since 2009, how many were cooked suspensions ,how many games did Sid get ?

      • 7mantel - May 12, 2014 at 9:56 PM

        Cookes

      • killerpgh - May 12, 2014 at 10:13 PM

None of those 13 fines/suspensions were Matt Cooke. But Like I said. Name the team(s) that had more fines and suspensions since 2011-12. You’re the one saying the Penguins get all this preferential treatment yet you can’t name a team with more fines/suspension over the past 3 season. Do that seem kind of odd to you?

      • moarjam - May 12, 2014 at 11:23 PM

Ok so you guys are just a bunch of cheap dbags then…

      • johnstone17 - May 13, 2014 at 7:58 AM

It doesn’t matter how many a team gets. It’s the player & the transgression. Basically with the fine on Lundqvist, the league is saying it’s not ok to spray someone with water, but if you want to spear a player in the twig & berries it should not be punished at all because he is a league poster boy.

    • c9castine - May 13, 2014 at 11:36 AM

why dont you tell us how they do since your the one all up in arms and making the argument about it.??

our players have been suspended more than any other team this year (that was a guess id be surprised if another team has been though).

other than that, i dont know what youd go off.

ill tell you how they dont favor them.

      they just dont…

      • 7mantel - May 13, 2014 at 12:21 PM

How about your boy Sid ?

      • c9castine - May 13, 2014 at 12:25 PM

how about him? i honestly havent looked at this “spear” play a second time. maybe he speared some guy in the nuts. maybe he should have gotten fined a few bucks.

ok. so what? is that really all you got? how about the blatant cross checks to the head that he took, with clear vivid video, and nothing happened? same kind of play the everybody lambasted james neal for and which he got fined 5k for.

        why the double standard 7mantel?

      • 7mantel - May 13, 2014 at 12:31 PM

Boris valabik? c9 you’ve watched a lot of hockey you can honestly say you never thought Sid got away with that hit or slew foot or any other questionable play !

      • c9castine - May 13, 2014 at 12:38 PM

honestly, nothing stands out in my memory. obviously nothing stands out in yours either or youd just come right out and say it. surely nothing that the average NHL player hasnt done and gotten away with. we are on here almost every day talking about how somebody should have gotten fined or suspended but didnt. this is not new. this is not special to sidney crosby.

listen, im not trying to be a dik here. but your grasping at straws. crosby hit him in the sack and i doubt he cared one bit he did it but the guy was literally holding onto his stick with both hands.

whining like the little brother who thinks big brother gets all the attention (or vice versa i suppose) is lame man.

sid has scored 1 goal in 12 games these playoffs and only 10 in his last 47 games played. why dont you talk about that, at least there is substance and evidence to it even if i dont think it matters a whole lot to where the team is right now, good or bad.

      • 7mantel - May 13, 2014 at 1:26 PM

Not whining one bit, but I guess you want to pass up the Boris valabik incident ,Sid punched him in the balls From behind while he was fighting Orpik . Slewfooting calahand a few years ago and Calahand got the interference penalty on the play. Crosby’s problems scoring is something I’ve seen time and again in all sports * Not that I’m not happy to see him in a slump ! Also I wasn’t up in arms over it ,only making a statement . Don’t take it personal ,I’ve had discussions with you before.

      • c9castine - May 13, 2014 at 12:29 PM

hahaha oh my god are you guys serious??

yeah he jerked his stick around in Moore’s “region” and yeah he probably didnt mind hitting him in the nuts either.

but maybe if moore wasnt holding onto his stick for dear life none of that would have ever happened. that actually happens a lot. much different than a player skating away and getting him from behind.

  3. davidsmj22 - May 12, 2014 at 8:51 PM

So spearing doesn’t get a fine and spraying water on someone playing -ice- hockey does. Sounds about right. Just something else for ol’ Cindy to blubber about.

    • claudegirwho - May 12, 2014 at 9:30 PM

Actually it’s something more for you all to cry about that Sid gets special treatment and your guys come out whining in full force wahhhh

    • charlieconway96 - May 12, 2014 at 11:02 PM

“Hey guys, take it easy with the squirt guns. Here use this spear instead, much better.” Everyone can blabber on about the CBA all they want but this makes zero logical sense.

  4. billiam55 - May 12, 2014 at 8:52 PM

………yet crosby gets off the hook for spearing moore in the groin area? and what makes this more laughable is lunqvist is fined more than thorntons water bottle incident. NHL is one of the most inconsistent sports leagues when it comes to handing out punishment. it really is a joke.

  5. charlieconway96 - May 12, 2014 at 8:56 PM

This will be one of the biggest “face palm” moments in NHL history if Crosby skates away free on this.

  6. moarjam - May 12, 2014 at 8:58 PM

    LOL!

Hank has got learn that the NHL is really trying to eliminate cheap shots like this…

If he wants to keep his money next time maybe just a nice spear to the nuts…

    • bwayblueshirt - May 12, 2014 at 9:03 PM

  7. 7mantel - May 12, 2014 at 8:59 PM

I wonder what Boris Valabik is thinking ,Crosby punches me in the jewels and gets no fine and no penalty and Lundqvist gets fined for squirting water at Sid !

  8. bsfan77 - May 12, 2014 at 8:59 PM

Cindy gets away with murder. Proves that he can do no wrong in the eyes of the NHL. Absolute BS! Proves that Cindy is the love child of Mario and Bettman.

  9. rsl22 - May 12, 2014 at 9:10 PM

No Pens fans denying the hypocrisy…

  10. runhigh24 - May 12, 2014 at 9:10 PM

If the NHL actually coddled Crosby they’d of fined or suspended Staal for cross checking him in the head. But that doesnt fit the narrative any of you guys want to believe.

    • comeonnowguys - May 13, 2014 at 9:15 AM

So because there’s not a blatant double standard, that proves that no double standard exists at all?

  17. rpiotr01 - May 12, 2014 at 9:32 PM

Different set of rules for Crosby than the rest of the league, move on nothing to see here.

So many amazing players and so much talent in the NHL right now, yet somehow the two faces of the league are Crosby and Bettman. What a shame.

  18. brandotho - May 12, 2014 at 9:33 PM

CROSBY, WATER FIGHTS AND SUCH AS …

Take a deep breath friends and keep things in perspective here. Of course it’s outrageous that yet again ‘poster boy’ Crosby gets away with cold bloody murder. After all, anyone from here to Katmandu knows that the clown could ‘never’ do any wrong in the eyes of the NHL and the money behind him. Nonetheless, please keep in mind that Crosby’s odds of ever hoisting the Stanley Cup again are probably less than 1500/1 Iran prevailing at the upcoming World Cup in Brazil ! That and ‘that’ alone should be more than enough to satisfy anyone’s ‘rightful’ thirst for vengeance against this ‘nasty’ little princess ! :)

    GO PENGUINS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you see all that water? He could have drowned poor little Cinderella. I’m surprised Bettman didn’t ask prosecutors to seek criminal charges against Hank for attempted murder.

  25. henrik4dawin - May 12, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Fine, Henrik deserved a fine– you don’t just spray the guy as you’re walking past, but it was not that bad. I believe 5K was the maximum they were allowed to fine him under the CBA, and if we assume 2.5K was the max for Thornton I don’t believe Hanks was as bad. As everyone’s stated, after the play, not much etc. But also, Hank’s was definitely NOT worse than Thornton so how could he get that much more

    • 7mantel - May 12, 2014 at 9:59 PM

      $2500 for the infraction + $2500 because it was Sid = $5000

  26. jpat2424 - May 12, 2014 at 10:15 PM

So grabbing your own groin is 25,000 dollar fine ( coach Q) but spearing somebody else’s juke gets you nothin. Hmmmm.

  36. bmy0913 - May 13, 2014 at 11:48 AM

Even worse, it’s all about context. Thornton was on the bench and wasn’t even in the play. Bostons frustrated because (as much as I hate to admit it, and him) Subban is playing like a monster right now and frustrating them at every tilt. He takes a squirt shot at him from the bench when he’s skating by, and he gets a max fine. That makes sense to me.

So sure, the league set a precedent and Lundqvist has to take his punishment. As a rangers fan, even I won’t defend that. Sure, I enjoyed the hell out of it and Im sure the king is smiling while he figuratively writes the check.

What makes me mad is that earlier in the playoffs when Lucic and Garbutt both caught spearing fines, they immediately got made an example of. One that apparently Crosbaby is exempt from. Poster boy for the league or not, when you set that precedent nobody is exempt. I get that dude gets a lot of attention for diving and whining, and a lot of it is deserved. But this is beyond that, he blatantly took a shoot on Dom and walks away with nothing. Not even a hearing.

On a side note, to address the amount of the fines, the max is based on their annual contracted earnings…Lundqvist’s fine is higher because he makes way more money, to be fair. Bettmans still a joke, and I would be interested to see if he had done it to some no namer if he would’ve gotten the max. But it makes sense in that regard.

if moore wasnt holding crosbys stick and he had more control over it, youd have a complaint.

you cant fine a guy for doing that when somebody else is also holding his stick for 10 seconds.

“listen, im not trying to be a dik here. but your grasping at straws. crosby hit him in the sack and i doubt he cared one bit he did it but the guy was literally holding onto his stick with both hands. ”

Son, what game were you watching, crosbys clearly got his stick between Doms legs. You can see dom reach down with one hand and bend and the waist to push the stick down, and then crosby jerks it up and out. You’re dilluted, and have zero understanding as to the definition of the word literally. Doms other hand never leaves his own stick. Get a grip homie.

And about his after the whistle slashes on Lundqvist? Or his slew foot? Your boy Crosby dekes somebody out of his jock and puts it on net, hes a phenom and the surest skater to catch an edge. But with that play, he doesn’t have the ability to take another line to pursue the puck? He just accidentally takes that wide of an angle and takes Girardi out from behind?

Get a grip man. Video doesn’t lie. Rangers fan or not, you are objectively wrong on all counts.

Crosby should be FINED and given a MATCH PENALTY for his SLEW FOOT on Girardi during THE SAME GAME! That is dirty and DANGEROUS! If the league was concerned about protecting players from injury as they are isolating crosby from his own actions, then they’d fine him. Where is a clip of the SLEW FOOT? If Crosby played as great as everybody gives him credit for, then in Gretsky style, Crosby wouldn’t have to be such a cheap shot artist.

    I have some questions ,,,,
If Henrik had gone over to the scrum & deked Crosby with a waffle shot — MAYBE Marc-Andre doesn’t like it, comes down – they have word. Maybe some penalties — but nobody gets a fine, Even a goalie fight doesn’t end up with as fine [most of the time. Because crotch-spearing a guy & hitting a guy when he’s down — all perfectly acceptable forms of ‘expressing’ one’s emotions. That time Mike Smith totally back of the knee slashed Dustin Brown — Brown gets an embellishment penalty — no fines. Mow down a goalie & spray him with a sheet of ice — no problem. Goalie splashes water on a guy [which he asserts he does all the time] gets fine 1/2 days pay, Punch him with the waffle — maybe 2 minute fine, splash water on the guy — 1/2 day’s pay.

Maybe it’s just me but if more players went around squirting water at each other instead of punching each other in the faces — we just might be able to reduce some fight-related injuries. Dan Carcillo pissing you off — don’t hit him — he could get hurt — squirt a little water at him [you know like when the fog tries to climb on the couch. In order for this to work, the league is going to have to start cutting down these water bottle fines & maybe increase fines for things like racing down to the other end of the ice to beat the crap out of younger goalie just because your teems let in 7 goals & he didn’t let any in. Apparently there was no ‘rule’ for this [although I would have thought it fell somewhere around the Hextall-Chellios rule. But If I understand correctly — Ray Emery rushing down the ice to force someone into s fight that didn’t want to fight with him — basically assaulting the poor guy — there’s no rule how to handle that situation do the NHL did nothing. But — had Holtby attempted to fight back with the first thing he grab — his trusty water bottle and squirted water at Emery — the next day Holtby would have been fine? How do they have a rule for water splashing and not for assult on an unwilling combatant?

I say give them all super soakers or paint guns to play with between whistles. Much safer then fighting.

So here’s my concern in regards to Lundqvist, Goalies can be superstition. He won that game [with the water bottle incident AND the next. Does he feel compelled to spill water on Crosby now after the second period whenever they play the penguins ..you know … if it worked once…or does he just need to poor water whichever team’s whiner is crying after the end of the second period? And if it’s sort of like one of those goalie rituals now [Crosby knows all about that sort of thing] does the team chip in to help him pay the fines? If it worked once So which Bruins or Canadiens will he need to sqirt on to next to keep the goog luck goinmg for jom
