Habs’ complete effort vs. Bruins forces Game 7

May 12, 2014, 10:22 PM EDT

After Boston’s superb performance in Game 5 on Saturday, the Montreal Canadiens responded in kind tonight with a 4-0 victory, forcing a Game 7 of their opening round series on Wednesday at TD Garden.

Canadiens netminder Carey Price was great when he needed to be, turning aside all 26 Bruins shots en route to his first shutout of the 2014 postseason.

Price had some help midway through the third period, though, as forward David Desharnais was able to knock the puck off the Canadiens’ goal line. The 27-year-old forward has struggled offensively in the postseason, but he made a big impact tonight with that one play.

Desharnais also added an assist and provided a spark to Montreal’s two big guns — Max Pacioretty and Thomas Vanek — both of whom were huge on Monday night. Pacioretty had two points, including his first goal of the series, while Vanek scored twice and now has five goals through 10 playoff contests.

As for the Boston side of things… Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask obviously didn’t match Price statistically, but he did hold his own in this contest. It’s fair to say his defenders could have done more to make this night pleasant for him.

Early in the first period, rookie blueliner Kevan Miller mishandled the puck, which led to Montreal forward Lars Eller‘s goal just 2:11 in. In the second period, defenseman Zdeno Chara arguably could have done more in a race with Pacioretty, which resulted in the Canadiens’ second goal.

Just 2:15 minutes later, Vanek made it 3-0 while Bruins forward Gregory Campbell was in the sin bin for high-sticking.

Vanek added an empty netter with 3:56 remaining because of a neutral-zone turnover while Rask was heading to the bench for the extra attacker. To add insult to injury, it counts as a goal against the Bruins goaltender because he wasn’t on the bench yet.

As mentioned above, the series now shifts back to Boston for the deciding Game 7. It’ll be interesting to see how the Bruins respond to their most lopsided defeat of the playoffs and, conversely, how Montreal will deal with playing at TD Garden, where it has lost two in a row.

Disappointing display by the B’s there at the end of the game. I was hoping for more punches.

    • thesportsjudge - May 12, 2014 at 10:28 PM

This kind of comment just feeds the trolls and Bruin haters. Why would you post this?

      • sabatimus - May 12, 2014 at 10:29 PM

        Because I’m being honest.

      • thesportsjudge - May 12, 2014 at 10:31 PM

Fair enough, but be prepared to face the wrath man(or lady, if it is the case.)

      • sabatimus - May 12, 2014 at 10:38 PM

That’s all right. What I said was a sheer emotional response and I’m not afraid to admit that. If people take issue, fine. Bruins haters will hate regardless of what anyone says.

      • thesportsjudge - May 12, 2014 at 10:41 PM

        Very true indeed.

At least they and you only embarrassed themselves tonight.

Bruins need to stay out of the penalty box. Check.

Habs goal 3 – Vanek on the PP. Goalllllllllll!

    joey4id – May 12, 2014 at 7:01 PM
Tonight the Habs should put Briere and Boullion back in the line up. PK has to play close to 27/28 minutes, Desharnais is too small be playing on top line against the big Bruins. Habs need to transition from d to o with speed through the neutral zone. Habs D men have to box out the B’s forwards in their zone. Price needs to be Price again. Plekanec, Vanek, and Patchioretty need to put the biscuit in the net. Force Krug (captain giveaway) and Hamilton to make mistakes.

B’s…. Great place to be right now No line up changes, but they need to stay out of the penalty box. Clog up the neutral zone, give up less shots, and watch for the stretch pass. Krejci needs to find a way to get out of his funk so L & I should try to set him much as much as possible.

Time for the boys to put their cojones on the table and put on their big boy pants. Game 7 please……

    • davidmessina63 - May 13, 2014 at 9:36 AM

I’ll only comment on the Price needs to be Price…He’s over rated. The post and good puck luck has made him look better the entire series. He should give his teammates his playoff money for all the help they are giving him with the blocked shots.

      Everything else…..

Yes the Habs showed up last night and it was a beat down. Bruins got careless and Habs capitalized.

Now we have a Bruins Montreal game 7 as we should. Hopefully Bruins win and you Montreal fans will show up to take your licks on the comments…..but it seems only a handful of you show up when they lose but ALL of you show up when they win. If Boston loses I’ll show up and take my punches but I don’t think that will happen.

      • joey4id - May 13, 2014 at 10:03 AM

I don’t really care who shows up or who doesn’t. I had the Bruins in 6 because they had the best team coming out of the gates. However, many of the B’s players are not stepping up. Everyone on the KIL line for starters. Krug and Miller are young d men and make many mistakes.

As for Price. Well, a goal post is not even a shot on net, and they occur when the goalie is not giving the shooter any net to shot at. Price is no more overrated than Rask. B’s fans used to say the same about Roy. Price has faced 4 elimination games this year and has won all 4 giving up only 1 goal. So, if the B’s want to win tomorrow the goal scorers starting with K, I, and L will have to put the biscuit in the net. You can gripe all you want about goal posts, blocked shots, luck etc….. Who gives a s**t? Right now it’s about the best players stepping up and getting the 4th win. Both teams have star players that can help push the team to the next round. Simply for the entertainment factor I hope they all show up.

  3. jpat2424 - May 12, 2014 at 10:26 PM

    Ignaila needs to be suspended

    • killerpgh - May 12, 2014 at 10:32 PM

Markov should have dropped the gloves and took the beating. Iginla clearly was the instigator and with under 5 minutes to go a suspension for game 7 would have been possible. Sometime you have to take one for the good of the .team

      • soj83 - May 12, 2014 at 10:36 PM

Markov wasn’t about to stand up for himself. His crosscheck, slash, and spear on Chara in the moments before the scrum is what had Chara getting in his face. That in no way is meant in defense of Lucic and Iginla, but after the way the Bruins played, and taking 3 shots from Chara, I don’t think anyone can blame him for being a little angry at Markov.

      • soj83 - May 12, 2014 at 10:41 PM

Chara taking 3 shots from Markov*

      • imleftcoast - May 12, 2014 at 11:31 PM

Chara really gave up on that second goal.

    • drewsylvania - May 12, 2014 at 10:43 PM

    • rrsm53 - May 13, 2014 at 7:13 AM

cry me a river obviously another canadian troll, you want to cheap shot people you have to get pay back, there isnt one guy on the Canadians who will stand up beside Prust…………….the rest are pussies.

    • davidmessina63 - May 13, 2014 at 9:42 AM

Why do Montreal fans always want players to be suspended when they take shots at the Habs? It’s hockey boys…part of the game. I don’t think any Boston fans are asking that that shrimp Gallagher be suspended for going after Bruins players. Every single time there is a punch or a spritz of water you guys want players suspended. Montreal throws plenty of cheap shots and we don’t cry. Your team won last night and your still gonna cry? Man the F up.

      • pl4tinum514 - May 13, 2014 at 12:12 PM

Your coach is the one crying, fool

  4. dboldave - May 12, 2014 at 10:26 PM

Habs came out flying like I knew they would and the B’s never matched their intensity. And those were some ugly goals to let up in a potential series clincher. I guess the only positive is that next game, they can only get better.

  5. soj83 - May 12, 2014 at 10:26 PM

It would not be a surprise to see Seidenberg doing everything he can to dress for game 7.

    • thesportsjudge - May 12, 2014 at 10:29 PM

He just started with “light contact”, in practice. No chance.

      • soj83 - May 12, 2014 at 10:30 PM

I know, but him at 50% would be better than anything the B’s had tonight.

      • thesportsjudge - May 12, 2014 at 10:36 PM

Not worth the risk, especially with Chara getting older.

      Canucks 2014 playoffs goal song:

      • canucks30 - May 13, 2014 at 3:21 AM

As I’ve stated previously, I’m actually cheering for the Bruins in this series.

I just wanted the series to go to Game 7 with lots of overtime so that whoever emerges victorious, loses to either the Penguins or the Rangers in the ECF.

Also, you are easily the most insecure Bruins fan on this site drewzducks.

      • drewzducks - May 13, 2014 at 9:47 AM

Wrong as usual Cannot. I’ve seen enough collapses over the years between the teams I root for that nothing phases me at this point. I also have no problem ripping my team when it’s deserved, as I’ve already done in this post. I may be a lot of things, but insecure will never be one of them.

      • canucks30 - May 13, 2014 at 3:28 AM

Incidentally, that goal song is also applicable to the other 16 times the Canucks have missed the playoffs; not just the 2014 Canucks.

In particular, the 1998-99 campaign which I regard as the worst in franchise history.

Fun Fact: Vancouver once went 15 consecutive seasons without a winning record.

  7. sixchr - May 12, 2014 at 10:28 PM

    I need to hit something.

    • canucks30 - May 12, 2014 at 10:40 PM

      Lucic, is that you?

      • mackattack29 - May 12, 2014 at 10:53 PM

Nah lucic already knows what he wants to hit. And it’s pretty much anything dangling between a man’s legs.

      • mackattack29 - May 12, 2014 at 10:59 PM

Man that was an entertaining game lol the goons came out at the end tho as always because the Bruins can’t lose like professionals. The Bruins without their dirty play would be THE most boring team in the league. Lol as long as players on opposing teams play whistle to whistle it shuts down the bruins. Haha and Emelin was rocking Boston players all over the ice. I’ve never seen a team dominate Boston in physicality. Bostons done, Montreal is about to send lucic back to the gay bars in boston.

      • thesportsjudge - May 12, 2014 at 11:17 PM

Wow, I guess the term “ho-mo-ph-ob-ic” minus the “-“‘s is not allowed?
Anyhow, what is your issue with gay, mack?

      • drewsylvania - May 13, 2014 at 11:04 AM

Best guess is that mack is overcompensating.

  8. alicesrightfootesq - May 12, 2014 at 10:30 PM

Lucic is the quintessential, troglodyte jock. He’s the Gronkowski of hockey.

    • bbgraf08 - May 12, 2014 at 10:34 PM

Gronk doesn’t have a mean bone in him. Bad comparison.

  9. graymalkin26 - May 12, 2014 at 10:30 PM

Suspend Jerome, no way, leave the ole man in, he’s a liability, their big line is rotten…him and that hook nosed Albanian Lucy..go Habs #bostonweak lol

    • sabatimus - May 12, 2014 at 10:32 PM

      Didn’t you get banned?

    • drewzducks - May 12, 2014 at 11:20 PM

But your ho bag momma is such a fan of his hook nose between her thunder thighs.

  10. pitpenguinsrulez - May 12, 2014 at 10:31 PM

I really wish someone would pop that douchebag Lucic right square in the face. Game 7 will be a classic and I’m sure NBC jizzed a bit with having two now.

    • sabatimus - May 12, 2014 at 10:34 PM

Just leave it to Crosby to spear him in the nuts and not get fined.

      • charlie24zz - May 12, 2014 at 10:43 PM

        You’re a loser sabatimus

      • sportsfaninyyc - May 12, 2014 at 10:43 PM

Lucic never got suspended for it.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - May 12, 2014 at 10:46 PM

Crosby should’ve been fined but let’s remember that the NHL is extremely inconsistent with fines/suspensions.

      • mackattack29 - May 12, 2014 at 10:54 PM

Lol u misspelled lucic. He’s done it more than anyone lol the guy is obsessed…

    • thesportsjudge - May 12, 2014 at 10:44 PM

Well, well, well. Look who makes an appearance. Welcome back from hiding in the closet on the whole Crosby spearing incident! Way to show your true colors.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - May 12, 2014 at 10:50 PM

Sorry didn’t know that I’m suppose to be here 24/7. As I just said he should’ve been fined but remember the league is very inconsistent. I don’t condone what Sids done and instead he should’ve been trying to score but as always him and the team never shy away from scrums in the playoffs. Now does that make you happy?

  11. graymalkin26 - May 12, 2014 at 10:36 PM

Face the wrath man or lady, I got a feeling it wouldn’t make a difference to you. Probably watching the game in Provincetown wearing a bruin bikini harhar

    • sabatimus - May 12, 2014 at 10:39 PM

Hey, if that’s the mental picture you enjoy, go right ahead with it.

  12. graymalkin26 - May 12, 2014 at 10:38 PM

Like I said, let old man Jerome play, he’s a liability.

  13. bigdaddy44 - May 12, 2014 at 10:38 PM

Chara has been nearly invisible in this series. The most frustrating thing about it is that the Canadiens don’t seem to be putting a beating on him like other teams have, he is doing it on his own. Not all, but too many of his teammates are sleepwalking, just like their captain. If anyone happens to find Chara’s heart and balls, please return them to him before game 7, and give the rest of the other stiffs a good, swift kick in the ass. Either that or give them a big dose of Adderall. It’s way too early to start focusing on baseball.

  14. gbart22 - May 12, 2014 at 10:42 PM

Carey Price doesn’t get his due at least not nationally like he should. He’s one of the best in the game right now and in his prime for the next several years. Habs if they don’t mess anything up could be going on a legit top of the division run for a few years like Boston has been on

    • bbgraf08 - May 12, 2014 at 10:50 PM

I’m a Bruins fan and I came into this series thinking Price was not as good as advertised. I was wrong. He has had some great luck in this series, but he is a stud goalie.

I hope he falls apart in game 7!

    • davidmessina63 - May 13, 2014 at 9:45 AM

He’s not a bad goalie but he has a lot of help making himself look good with the iron and his players in front of him. If anyone deserves their due it’s the Habs D blocking all the shots and closing the shooting lanes.

  15. drewsylvania - May 12, 2014 at 10:46 PM

Some real winners in the stands tonight. What kind of clowns throw junk onto the ice, regardless of what’s going on?

    • charlie24zz - May 12, 2014 at 11:02 PM

      Is that all you’ve got?…

      • drewsylvania - May 12, 2014 at 11:05 PM

FYI downthumbing me doesn’t make me wrong, as anyone can see…

    • jkaplan11 - May 12, 2014 at 11:12 PM

What’s going on was complete goonery from the B’s.

I’m sorry that your upset. I have your tissue right here.

      • drewsylvania - May 13, 2014 at 11:07 AM

What does this have to do with throwing junk onto the ice?

Are Montreal fans too stupid to realize they could injure their own personnel doing this?

  16. mlondleblanc - May 12, 2014 at 10:47 PM

For Canadian Fans in the U.S. The coverage of these games is very unfair. The 3rd game in overtime Cut to the Kings vs Ducks before the end of the game. And again today today with only 23 seconds left cut away again. A great game is cut short just to see the start of another game really!!

    • soj83 - May 12, 2014 at 10:52 PM

Big bad bruins, what a joke, just like that over rated city, if I hear boston strong one more time I’m gonna puke

    • soj83 - May 12, 2014 at 10:57 PM

You’re really going to attack a whole city over a sports team? That is sad. There are plenty of sports teams that I don’t like, but I would never put down all the citizens of the city because of that. Boston Strong may be an overplayed slogan, but it meant a lot to help heal the people of the city. It is sad that you are either that bad of a person or a major troll.

Didn’t see Thornton laughing tonight or Lucic trying to show his toughness. Lucic toughness is best described as a coward sneaking around looking to get in the cheap shot just like he did in the last 2 minutes of the game tonight.

    • c9castine - May 12, 2014 at 11:03 PM

you know, to be honest…when i watch interviews with him he seems like a pretty decent person. he has well thought out and well spoken responses to questions and he seems fairly humble.

now, i realize the gamesmanship aspect of playing hockey. i realize guys can be much different during the course of play than in real life. but damn, lucic takes that to another level. the screaming, chest beating, bicep flexing and cheap crap is just obnoxious and is matched by nobody across the league.

like somebody else said, prototypical jock strap for a brain.

    • mackattack29 - May 12, 2014 at 11:08 PM

Pretty much. Lucic is pathetic. He missed an open net and got rocked several times. Marchand has been the worst player in the series. Haha the guy generated nothing and hasn’t even been a pest. Just a shadow of the guy he used to be in the playoffs. Same goes for chara, krejci, and Rask.

      • infectorman - May 13, 2014 at 9:20 AM

So if they win Game 7 it only emphasizes that a weakened Boston team not playing up to par STILL put your Habs down.

        Got it…

  19. oneil1234 - May 12, 2014 at 10:55 PM

Jesus Christ you people are pathetic. I’m ashamed to be apart of the human race. Grow the f*uck up! A lot or you people deserve to star in the movie idiocracy.

so, im sure julien is on the hot seat, and bergeron and chara and lucic are all whiners who are getting frustrated and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blaaaaahhhh

right? thats how it goes with the penguins. surely the almighty bruins are held to an even higher standard? or wait…thats right. crosby doesnt play for them.

play the f’in series. game 7. lets go.

    • thesportsjudge - May 12, 2014 at 11:21 PM

      Crickets…….

      • c9castine - May 13, 2014 at 12:29 AM

who cares about game 6. game 6 won nobody anything.

ive been consistent throughout this postseason that the only games that mean anything are the ones that win or lose a series.

lets talk after game 7. win or lose ill field every comment you can throw at me.

        crickets? crickets in your head.

In game 7, like all games played this year by Chara, he has the attention span of an ant. He wanders around like he lost a contact or something. He uses that over sized stick like a cave man. Chara is not a good stick handler, passer or skater. What people see in this guy is, I don’t get it. He would not be in the NHL if they didn’t have 30 teams.

I’m not a fan of either team, but that game was entertaining. Boston just could not match the intensity of the Habs. Price was awesome, especially in the second period, when Boston threw everything at them that they could. I still think Boston will win game 7, but it should be fun to watch.

Boston will lose this series. All the pressure all them now, because they are the best team in nhl this year. Don t lose your face. One game to decide and it does matter.

I told you Boston idiots that the Habs would cruise to a win and I was right! Now just one more win and we can shut you up until next season! I think the Habs win big again in Boston tomorrow night and then bring on the easy games!

I’m a Bruins fan. Yes Montreal was the better team last night. Yes we will have a Game 7 as this rivalry should.

    I can’t stand Montreal Fans because….

    1. Any infraction by a Bruins player and you scream “He should be suspended”
    2. Blind to any Montreal infraction. Any Bruins throwing a punch or something…”Goons…that’s how they play…blah blah blah…..Do you pay attention to the game?…PK doesn’t do any of the same? Gallagher isn’t a punk and then hide? Two way street fellas…. Geez Louise.
    3. When your team loses you don’t show up to take your licks on the comments and those who do still whine and cry about how a Bruins player should be suspended or tossed from the league
    4. When your team wins you still whine and cry
    5. The water…really????
    6. Your worship of Price…….It’s not him…it’s the D in front of him that’s the hero.

Well, from a Habs fan, here is my reply…

      1. No, we really don’t. Classless nut-spearing by Lucic is just funny though. I know Markov speared Chara last night, but was he supposed to take Chara’s stick wagging in his after a trip? No thank you.

      2. PK plays with an edge, and it seems to be working this serious. Gallagher is the man, don’t be angry that he’s a more talented, cleaner, and less-hated version of Rat Marchand.

      3. I don’t really get what you’re saying here.

      4. I’m not whining…

      5. Thornton sprayed water in PK’s visor DURING THE PLAY OF THE GAME. Obviously unsportsmanlike, and a chump move, and he got fined for it. End of story.

      6. Price is pretty effing good. I’d give him the edge over Rask this series, who can’t seem to figure out his 5-hole. And don’t give me the “if we had hit the posts, this series would be over” excuse…if Bruins players were supposed to hit the net, they would. If Carey wasn’t even in the net, those shots still wouldn’t have gone in. Suck it up.

Seems like you’re the only one whining here, I bet you’re afraid for game 7. Sack up, loser.

      7. Habs fans think punches are worse than cheapshots.

How about you say that to my face? How do I get your contact information bud?

    • crusty14 - May 13, 2014 at 3:43 PM

its funny how tab fans think what markov did was perfectly acceptable , but should any bruin do it, they should be suspended!

Im ok with what markov did, he just better be ready for the reaction of the person he sticks

      • davidmessina63 - May 13, 2014 at 7:02 PM

        Exactly

    • davidmessina63 - May 13, 2014 at 7:04 PM

      Sack up??? LMFAO

Did I say anything about the iron being a Price booster??? Nope. Actually gave your D a compliment but in typical Montreal fashion you gotta twist it like chick. Man Up Loozah.

    for canucks30, off topic alert

    well canucks30, as a courtesy i’ll explain

firstly, i truly am the renowned, the one and only and the exalted highcountrybear … unfortunately, i bricked my eleven year old chinese pc laptop doing a benchmark test on processor throughput after upgrading to the fastest internet feed on the planet [ i always use unix stations, but had to buy a pc to communicate with minions encumbered by windows driven machines ... peasants all ]

twenty simultaneous bit-torrent movie downloads baked the mo board, leaving the password for the highcountrybear account in limbo, yet accessible when i find the strength to lift the drive

i am not associated with other learned members within the pht community beyond use of the english language, and other commonalities found in our popular culture including hockey

my heritage is found in the hebrides, but i have relatives living on remote islands in the west of scotland generally, as they’ve done for centuries … i was once told a relative worked at the muckle flugga lighthouse of a time when it still employed keepers, so it has personal attachment … the remoteness of the island suits our nature in happy isolation

i’ve learned in my travels through time, fixing myself in space using names tying me to an ancient heritage is, good medicine …
