Even more on those Phaneuf trade rumors

May 12, 2014, 5:28 PM EST

Further to our post earlier today, a potentially key piece of information from Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos:

And for all those PHT commenters who think Dion Phaneuf is untradeable because he’s attached to a seven-year, $49 million contract, at least one former NHL general manager disagrees, per Sportsnet’s Mark Spector.

“If you like the player, it’s not an issue,” the former GM said. “There are advantages and disadvantages to long-term deals. If you like him, he’s locked up.”

The opinions on Phaneuf vary, to say the least. Yes, he makes mistakes. But at the same time, only six NHL d-men have scored more goals in the last three seasons, and according to Extra Skater, no blue-liner was deployed against tougher competition in 2013-14.

Also remember that Phaneuf is only 29, and the salary cap is expected to increase in the next few years. On a better team, and perhaps with less demanded of him defensively, he could be a fit.

“If you like the player, it’s not an issue”

If you like Phaneuf enough to keep him for 7 years/$49M, there’s an issue with *you*.

    • mikebel11 - May 12, 2014 at 7:28 PM

Also the resident former GM over at sportsnet is Doug Maclean, who’s a moron. Darren Dreger also already noted that there’s no truth to it, as is the case with all reports that originate from former NHL punching bag and current idiot Nick Kypreos.

  2. lowenni - May 12, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Look, Phaneuf isn’t a top defenseman and he has rightfully been criticized the past seasons. But he is a top 4 defenseman who can skate, shoot, pass, hit, and defend against at least average competition so on really any team looking for top-4 defense like the Avs, Oilers, etc. he could be a solid pickup. He’s only criticized so much BECAUSE of his contract and captaincy (specifically in Toronto), if he had a $3.5 million dollar contract and was an assistant captain people would call him a bargain. I think he would be a very solid addition for the Avs in particular if they are looking to contend for the Cup next year.

    • drewsylvania - May 12, 2014 at 6:02 PM

He was criticized heavily well before the new contract.

    • hockeyflow33 - May 12, 2014 at 6:03 PM

I think he makes too many mistakes in key situations to be counted on. He has the skill to be a top tier defensemen but seems to be missing the hockey smarts.

      • joey4id - May 12, 2014 at 6:17 PM

You are dead on. I’ve seen about 10 Leafs games and in every game he made mistakes that are uncharacteristic of a top d man.

      • ffrey3660 - May 13, 2014 at 9:36 AM

All true but all must remember he does play for the Leafs.

    • lowenni - May 12, 2014 at 6:21 PM

I’m not saying he’s a top D man so I agree that he makes mistakes “uncharacteristic of a top D-man”. But if the Leafs retained some of his salary he can still be an impact player with the skill he has. He scored 20 goals in his rookie season and still has that skill. Paired next to Jan Hedja or Erik Johnson in Colorado (with either of them in a shutdown partner role) he could make an impact or at least be an upgrade over say, Nate Guenin. Colorado is going to have to either let Ryan O’Reilly or Paul Statsny walk (I would try and keep Stastny), so they could use some of that cap space to trade for Phaneuf. I wouldn’t want to face that team, personally, especially if a very physical pair of Phaneuf and Johnson was coming at me.

      • jernster21 - May 12, 2014 at 7:24 PM

Nate Guenin was a +9 on the season and +1 in the playoffs…he’ll be making 800k next year. I’ll take that instead of an overrated, over paid Dion Phaneuf.

      • avscup - May 12, 2014 at 8:32 PM

Just.shut.up.please! Phaneuf does not belong on the Avs Roster! EVER!

  3. ewampus - May 12, 2014 at 6:31 PM

He is what he is. A frustrating defensemen that seems to just scratch the surface of his talent. He has only played in “hockey crazy” markets so maybe a little less media attention would do him wonders. Have Toronto keep a million a year in the cap hit I would love him to play for my Dallas Stars.

  4. nobandwagoners - May 12, 2014 at 7:07 PM

And, in an unrelated news item, at least one former NHL general manager thinks Martians live among us.

File Spector’s story in the “obvious” file. You can pretty much find opinions on both sides of any hockey issue/trade/player/etc. It’d be more of a story is the GM wasn’t simply some unattributed “former” GM and, even better yet, whether that particular GM happens to believe that himself, i.e., that Phaneufs’ contract isn’t (or is) a big deal given the player you’d get. Just struck me as a fluff piece that doesn’t actually say anything other than the obvious.

  5. jernster21 - May 12, 2014 at 7:11 PM

That’s why that “former GM” is a “former GM”.

  6. LampyB - May 12, 2014 at 7:13 PM

No way toronto retains a million, they just re-signed him, hes their captain, and D are at a HUGE premium right now.

I’d be so pissed to see Avs take this defensive sieve. He plays like an idiot and makes rookie mistakes, and even acts like a tool in the hbo series.

    • jernster21 - May 12, 2014 at 7:17 PM

Nothing about his game wants him on my team. People are talking about how the Avs can’t afford Stastny, O’Reilly AND MacKinnon but suddenly we can afford a 7mm contract for a defenseman who isn’t even the number 1 on said Avs team? What a slap in the face to Erik Johnson. No thanks.

      • jernster21 - May 12, 2014 at 7:19 PM

In english I meant to say, nothing about his game makes me want him on my team.

  7. 13datsyuk13 - May 12, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Is he a right handed shot?

  8. afrozenpond - May 12, 2014 at 9:05 PM

    He’s s.o.f.t soft….period.

  9. evermench - May 12, 2014 at 9:26 PM

The “Ex-GM” is Doug McLean who’s opinion is worth less than nothing. He said the exact same thing on TV last week. There’s a reason he’s still at Rogers Sportsnet. Any GM who makes this deal should also send Rogers their application for an “Analyst” position.

  10. leafsilluminati - May 12, 2014 at 10:25 PM

I won’t lie… reading all the Phaneuf hate on this site has me butthurt >_<

  11. bgord - May 12, 2014 at 10:29 PM

Overrated no good player. Time to hang ‘em up.

  12. beergold - May 13, 2014 at 8:26 AM

Burke brought him and Kessel in and told them they would lead the Leafs to the SC and that their jerseys would one day be raised to the rafters in Leafland. Not gonna happen…not ever! That experiment has blown up in the Leafs and their fans face!

  13. 3linepass - May 13, 2014 at 10:29 AM

So if he get’s traded does that make him some other team’s “sloppy seconds”?

  14. hieronymous27 - May 13, 2014 at 6:57 PM

Wearing the “C” for the Maple Leafs and being married to a celebrity hottie garners you a lot of attention. The bottom line however is you have to play smart, sound hockey and, at the age of 29, Phaneuf just doesn’t do that consistently enough. If he hasn’t done so by this point in his career you have to wonder if he ever will learn to do so.
