Kings promote Michael Futa to director of player personnel

May 9, 2014, 9:29 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Kings announced that team executive Michael Futa has been promoted on Thursday. He’s been bumped up from being director of amateur scouting to vice president of hockey operations and director of player personnel.

In case you’re wondering, that isn’t a very long way of saying “assistant GM,” as Rob Blake holds that title. Still, it likely means that Futa is being rewarded for his work with the organization. This is currently his seventh full season with the Kings organization.

Here’s some background information regarding Futa from the Kings:

Futa is in his seventh full season with the Kings, after spending five successful seasons as General Manager of the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Futa came to the Kings in 2006, when he was appointed Co-Director of Amateur Scouting along with Mark Yannetti. Together, Futa and Yannetti rebuilt and retooled the entire Kings Amateur Scouting staff to where it is today. Under Futa and Yannetti’s guidance, the Amateur Scouting staff has been responsible for building the Kings stable of top prospects which includes current Kings Drew Doughty, Kyle Clifford, Alec Martinez, Slava Voynov, Dwight King and Jordan Nolan – all members of the 2012 Stanley Cup Championship team – as well as Tyler Toffoli, Tanner Pearson, Linden Vey, Andrew Campbell, and former Kings Wayne Simmonds, Andrei Loktionov and Brayden Schenn. Jake Muzzin was also signed as a free agent by the Kings after the Amateur Scouting staff identified him as a top prospect.

This is a pre-emptive strike to prevent the Canucks or some other team from poaching him to be the architect of their own rebuild of the amateur scouting staff and development of player personnel. I’m hoping Linden can get some solid guys in to build up scouting, by replacing Ron Delorme.

The Kings profile on Futa conveniently forgets that he has also been responsible for drafting busts like Trevor Lewis, Thomas Hickey, Colton Teubert, Derek Forbert, and Oscar Moller.

Trevor Lewis – (although not a goal scorer) has been a solid “checking” center that contributes occasional timely goals and a solid playoff performer.

Thomas Hickey – Agreed. Way to High at #4 overall. Big Reach.

Colton Teubert – At least they got Dustin Penner for him which eventually contributed to 2012 cup run! But Penner was a POS and NON Factor for his “regular season” career with KINGS.

Derek Forbort – Jury still out on this one…. Still only 22 years old and 6-4 200 lbs. Fits the mold of Big D man in KINGS system. He will get his chance with the likes of Mitchell, Green, and Reghyr who are older.

Oscar Moller – EL BUSTO!!! Agreed.

    Cant win them all….

And if we could not Keep Hextall. This move must mean that FUTA is someone KINGS believe in and want as park of the Organization.

Dean Lombardi is the KEY. Hopefully Rob Blake can learn as much as possible while Lombardi is with KINGS.

Continued success! NO complaints with the character acquisitions and trade deadline deals. (although I miss Jack Johnson, Wayne Simmonds and Brayden Schenn……I will take a STANLEY CUP!! ANY DAY!!!!)

Gotta trade something good to get something good most of the time!!!!

    Continued Great Work!!!

Look forward to see Kevin Gravel (and his fellow KINGS prospect teammate in college), Valentin Zykov, Linden Vey Derek Forbort, Jordan Weal. Brayden McNabb try to contribute to future KINGS success!
