Video: Orpik flattens Richards into turnbuckle

May 7, 2014, 8:18 PM EST

Brooks Orpik returned from an undisclosed injury tonight and didn’t waste any time before establishing his physical game, although he accomplished that by delivering a dangerous hit to Rangers forward Brad Richards.

Orpik pushed Richards into the boards next to the Penguins’ bench, smashing the Rangers forward’s head into the turnbuckle. You can see that hit below:

The Rangers took exception to that, but Richards didn’t suffer an injury and Orpik wasn’t penalized for his actions. The story might have been very different a few years ago, before the NHL put rounded glass there.

The league made that change after Montreal’s Max Pacioretty was slammed into the turnbuckle by Boston’s Zdeno Chara in 2011. The Canadiens forward suffered a broken vertebra and a severe concussion as a result of that incident.

Another Bruin troll. You should be worrying more about Montreal than Brooks Orpik.

      • bsfan77 - May 7, 2014 at 9:26 PM

Talking about troll? You were all over the article about Lucic and the alleged “spear”.

      • bsfan77 - May 7, 2014 at 9:27 PM

Didn’t see you keeping your nose out of that!

      • 6superbowls - May 7, 2014 at 9:55 PM

Damn right I did. Because what Lucic did was a dirty cheap a@@ play. Difference between me and you Bruin beanheads is you comment on every Pens article calling the kettle black. All while forgetting to look in the mirror. Probably still trying to justify Thornton’s attack???

Never defended it. There you go generalizing again. Read my comments below jacka$$. That is if you can read.

It’s a body check. Big deal. Happens many times in a game. Zzzzzz

Yep, about as common as a failed Ranger power play

Montreal and Penguins fans should recognize that this requires a full police investigation and Orpik should be banned from hockey for life. He deliberately tried to hit him into the stanchion and kill him. No excuse for this barbaric act.

and you are a nancy soccer mom pussie… go watch golf…..

  5. bsfan77 - May 7, 2014 at 9:23 PM

Note that unlike Hab fans crying when Pacioretty ran into the turnbuckle, Ranger’s fans are not screaming 911. Things happen fast on the ice and it should be a penalty but far from suspendable.

  7. bsfan77 - May 7, 2014 at 9:28 PM

      • dropthepuckeh - May 8, 2014 at 7:52 AM

Looks like Brooksie couldn’t take the impact himself. Either that or he’s too scared for retribution…

  8. 7mantel - May 8, 2014 at 8:28 AM

As the teams got together Gutless Orpik couldn’t wait to get off the ice ,he might have to defend himself !
