Video: Francis addresses Muller firing, says ‘fresh start’ a bunch of times

May 5, 2014, 5:25 PM EDT

Carolina Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis met with reporters today after firing head coach Kirk Muller and assistants John MacLean and Dave Lewis.

The highlights:

— Francis reiterated that it was important to get a “fresh start”; hence, the coaching change.

— Called it an open search for Muller’s replacement. “I don’t really have anybody in mind.”

— Ideally would like to have a new coach in place for the draft.

— Said firing the coach doesn’t let players off the hook, and players were told as much in their exit interviews.

— Wants a coach that communicates well and holds players accountable.

    “Also, wants a coach that holds players accountable.”

    Lavi won’t be back because Karmanos doesn’t like him. Would like to see Jeff Daniels or Kevin McCarthy

    Kevin Dineen

    Kevin Dineen was actually supposed to succeed Mo on his second go around, but he was unavailable. I wouldn’t write that one off

    Tortorella would be a sideshow in NC. But I can’t say I wouldn’t love to see him back. I hate the thought of not seeing those postgame pressers. He’s a tort. No pun intended.

    Don’t think he’s a Ron Francis kinda guy. Too much baggage

    They’re going to be living off the memory of 2006 for a long time.

    Fresh start -> Gary Roberts.

    I would highly approve +1 kabillion.
