Video: Thornton injured briefly after Subban avoided check

May 3, 2014, 3:01 PM EDT

The Boston Bruins had a brief scare early in the third period of Game 2.

Bruins tough guy Shawn Thornton left the game briefly after he missed a check against Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban. As you’ll see in the video, Subban avoided the check and Thornton sped right through without hitting his intended target.

While Thornton left the ice after that play, he returned with just over 11 minutes to play in the period.

not that I like Subban or the Habs, but why at the end of that video do the announcers seem to sound like Subban intentionally injured Thornton by avoiding the hit?

    • flyerspsu - May 3, 2014 at 4:07 PM

they werent saying or implying Subban intentionally tried to injure Thornton, they were just saying that it is kind of frowned upon play to duck low out of a hit like that b/c you are putting the other player at risk for an injure b/c you essentially dont want to take a hit, its not a dirty play but it is dangerous

      • mattypbillsmafia - May 3, 2014 at 4:15 PM

Like I said, I don’t like Subban, but IMO it looked like he was already going down from the shoot-in anyways. I smell what you’re steppin in though.

    • joeman26 - May 3, 2014 at 9:37 PM

just another duck out of the way by PK…no surprise there

  2. kantnockdahustle89 - May 3, 2014 at 3:12 PM

Subban had hit back to him and facing the boards. Don’t get why Thorton was mad. His own fault.

    • pepper2011 - May 3, 2014 at 3:51 PM

I am guessing he was getting chirped.

  3. bsfan77 - May 3, 2014 at 3:25 PM

Someone tell the Habnots they need to play the whole game. They have no shot if the B’s play their game

  4. thesportsjudge - May 3, 2014 at 3:37 PM

    Subban’s natural reaction: To TURTLE!

  5. bsfan77 - May 3, 2014 at 3:37 PM

    And crap his pants

  6. bruins33 - May 3, 2014 at 3:40 PM

so glad we have malcolm rather than suban. terrible character. no respect for the game

    • bruins33 - May 3, 2014 at 3:40 PM

      *p.k.

  7. muckleflugga - May 3, 2014 at 3:41 PM

thornton … poster boy for bruins half-wit hockey … glove shaking neanderthal incarnate

was it my imagination or did bruins get better when his brooding ugly face was in the dressing room

    • pepper2011 - May 3, 2014 at 3:52 PM

Or if you watch the game; Pierre mentioned him calming the team down. Why are you always so predictable?

    • cloudniner9 - May 3, 2014 at 3:55 PM

no you moron he came back to the bench and was the one that started the rally, how about paying attention to what happened in the game before making your stupid comments,

    • flyerspsu - May 3, 2014 at 4:11 PM

for a guy who plays an enforcer role in the league for what 10 years and was known as the poster boy for that role as a clean respectable player I have a hard time trashing the guy and calling him a goon or anything like after after one bad incident, to be fair it was really bad, but how he has carried himself and played in every other moment of his career i think that speaks louder of his character that one bad lapse of judgement

    • pleasefiredan - May 5, 2014 at 10:55 AM

How is that not charging? He came from half ice?

  8. glenno08 - May 3, 2014 at 3:43 PM

If that was Marchand who turtles Subban I’d he would have gotten a 5 minute match penalty

    • pepper2011 - May 3, 2014 at 3:54 PM

Kind of agree. Not that I think Subban did anything wrong on this play, but I don’t see much of a difference between this and Marchand ducking.

Is it ok to duck if both guy aren’t completely upright?

  9. glenno08 - May 3, 2014 at 3:44 PM

If that was Marchand who turtled like Subban did, he would have gotten a 5 minute match penalty

    0 0

  10. cambannedloinstache - May 3, 2014 at 3:50 PM

How ****ing stupid do you have to be to consider evading a check turtling

  11. thegronk87 - May 3, 2014 at 3:54 PM

Subban turtled when he saw Thornton coming – not a penalty but a dirty play. If PK were tough, he would have taken the hit or at least braced himself.

    • shwatson - May 3, 2014 at 4:04 PM

“Turtling” is the act of crumbling to the ice and covering your head during a fight. I swear some of you people don’t know anything about the game.

  12. muckleflugga - May 3, 2014 at 4:03 PM

    cloudniner9

shouldn’t you be preparing your excuses and whining about the officiating like every-other self respecting bruins supporter –using the term self-respecting loosely of course

what was long and hard on shawn thornton … grade four of course

    lmao

    • thesportsjudge - May 3, 2014 at 4:12 PM

Just because you didn’t pass third, don’t give Shawn a hard time for fourth.

  13. muckleflugga - May 3, 2014 at 4:15 PM

    flyerspsu

    right call on turtling

still, subban was on the ice long before thornton arrived … thornton’s a slow-footed plod and is simply incapable of making any adjustment

bruins undoing will be that sort of play, going for crushing takeouts against quick-footed opponents ready to dance out of the way, up the ice with an extra man rush

    bzzzzzzzt goal

    • blackhawksdynasty - May 3, 2014 at 4:28 PM

      Hmm…..

Reminds me of last year’s finals…..

  14. tapefolie - May 3, 2014 at 4:59 PM

What a piece of dirt Thornton is, he got what he deserved!!

  15. tapefolie - May 3, 2014 at 5:15 PM

And for those of you saying he should take the hit b$ll s$it!! If I see some dirtbag coming at me I’m going to do the same thing every god damn time!

  16. salmon90 - May 3, 2014 at 5:25 PM

What a coward to avoid the hit. What kind of player would do that!

  17. tapefolie - May 3, 2014 at 5:32 PM

And what kind of coward try’s to hit a player in a vulnerable position. He wasn’t going to ease up and got injured as a result

  18. hairpie2 - May 3, 2014 at 6:52 PM

Subban turned away from the way his natural momentum was taking him as a rt hand shot, twisted his body to the other side, and curled up so Thornton would trip over him face first into the boards. not very difficult to figure that out.

  19. tapefolie - May 3, 2014 at 7:28 PM

And what’s wrong with that moron. If he was going to hit me I’d do the same f$ucking thing

  20. shwatson - May 3, 2014 at 9:43 PM

What does inured briefly even mean? Either he was inured or he wasn’t.

  21. phxyotes - May 4, 2014 at 12:25 AM

Thorton was coming at him full speed and would have murdered Suban if he hadn’t ducked him. I don’t blame Suban one bit, Thorton was probably looking to hurt him being the sawed-off midget bully he is.

  22. arbruins - May 4, 2014 at 8:15 AM

Hey Muckle, maybe you should watch the entire next game and not just parts of it. Put the tube socks and lotion down and try to focus. People will take you more seriously if you actually talk about something you have knowledge of.

    Love, Mom.

  23. jcornella - May 4, 2014 at 12:23 PM

It was a bit whimpy to duck it but he apologized and thinking a suspension is likely is stupid. Keep him and his minus 2 in there!
