Holmgren to remain as Flyers GM; what about Hextall?

May 2, 2014, 5:18 PM EST

From CSN Philly’s John Clark:

No surprise, really. The Flyers may have lost in the first round of the playoffs, but it was largely assumed Holmgren’s job was saved (if it was ever truly in jeopardy) when Philadelphia fought back from an awful start to make the playoffs.

It does, however, bring up the future of assistant general manager Ron Hextall, who’s reportedly “in the mix” for the GM opening in Vancouver, and could certainly be a candidate to replace George McPhee in Washington.

It was thought last year when Hextall came to Philly from the Kings that he might one day replace Holmgren.

“I do want to be a general manager,” Hextall said, per NHL.com. “I talked to [Holmgren] about that when we talked about this job. If something else becomes available, I at least want to look at it. He was absolutely fine with that. My goal still hasn’t changed in terms of where I want this to all end.”

It might end up that Holmgren becomes team president in Philadelphia (a position that doesn’t currently exist), and Hextall steps into the GM role.

In fact, something along those lines appears to be Snider’s plan:

As for the players?

Veteran defenseman Kimmo Timonen is the club’s most important pending unrestricted free agent. In March, the 39-year-old said he’d “figure out during the summer” if he wants to keep playing.

Oh, and there was this:

CSN Philly has more on what was said today.

  2. mcphillthy - May 2, 2014 at 5:46 PM

People are still talking about trading weber? Lol

    • broadstreetbeatdown - May 2, 2014 at 8:37 PM

They’re talking about because the Preds can’t afford to keep him. Not to mention he can get them a haul and solve their goal scoring problems.

      • flyerspsu - May 2, 2014 at 11:01 PM

The preds can afford to keep him now, the contract was extremely front loaded, there would be no reason to trade him now that they paid him like 24 mil the last 2 seasons

      • broadstreetbeatdown - May 2, 2014 at 11:43 PM

They paid him 28m. That salary does not drop till the start of the 2016 season from 14m to 12m.

    • mcphillthy - May 2, 2014 at 9:53 PM

I don’t think they will trade him until Jones matures. Who better to learn from than Shea Weber? They will trade him eventually but it will be a couple years down the road.
Oh man what a haul that would get them though… Wow

      • flyerspsu - May 2, 2014 at 11:03 PM

The flyers will probably overpay to get him in a trade when he’s past his prime in typical flyers fashion

  3. holeecowman - May 2, 2014 at 6:21 PM

whyyyyy. homer has done nothing and hes getting credit for the turn around. gtfo. complete garbage. seriously he needs to step down or be terminated period. as well as berube his system isn’t good pass pass pass pass pass wth is that. this team needs a new direction/culture. hey fast eddie try a real rebuild and dump this retool theory its obviously not working hiw many years has it been 39/40 since your last cup. what a joke. how about taking time and thinking these kind of decisions through. enough of quick stuff. line your target up instead firing from the hip for once. omg this team is a joke.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - May 2, 2014 at 8:20 PM

Cue the fanboy legion. Prepare yourselves for an avalanche of stupidity from the Hens fans. Craig Berube is going to be Jack Adams candidate bank on it.

  4. steelcity333 - May 2, 2014 at 6:45 PM

But I was told the Flyers would make it further than the Penguins. HAHAHAHA, bunch of losers.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - May 2, 2014 at 8:11 PM

Maybe you should worry about the Rags instead. Looks like Beach Ball Fleury has his hands full…again.

      • steelcity333 - May 2, 2014 at 8:40 PM

2-2 now buddy. Have fun watching the Pens and Rangers play another two plus weeks.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - May 2, 2014 at 8:49 PM

Easy to get a goal on Hank when Malkin’s stick is interfering with his glove arm.

      • steelcity333 - May 2, 2014 at 8:59 PM

Easy to say that even though the puck was behind him when the contact happened. It was going in regardless. Unless of course Lundqvist has 3 arms.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - May 2, 2014 at 9:05 PM

Puck was still in play and not across the goal line when the contact was initiated. Whether the save would have been made or not is debatable. What is not is that he was interfered with. You guys got a gift, go give the ref a kiss.

      • steelcity333 - May 2, 2014 at 10:07 PM

You guys are unbelievable. There’s always an excuse. “The refs and league allowed the Penguins to breathe today, that’s why they won.” You sound so bitter and stupid.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - May 2, 2014 at 10:14 PM

Maybe you’ve been preoccupied with the NBA finals. The Pens lost tonight.

  5. capsnbohs23 - May 2, 2014 at 7:59 PM

Id be ok with Hextall replacing GMGM

  6. flyboystransport - May 2, 2014 at 8:06 PM

Homer becomes president but also becomes in charge of scouting and hexy becomes gm. If it happens the flyers may draft better outside of the 1st round plus hextall has put his time in and deserves a shot. Worse case scenario hextall flops homer is still in charge with John paddock taking over

  7. csilojohnson - May 2, 2014 at 9:43 PM

Lundquist is the one who made contact. The king was trying to buy a call once he felt the puck behind him. Good game though.

  8. eagles512 - May 2, 2014 at 10:07 PM

Time for Holmgren to go. Too many mistakes have hamstrung them from improving in other areas.

    • President Charles Logan - May 2, 2014 at 10:12 PM

does he lace up the skates? does he suit up and take the face offs? makes saves? kills pims?

      • mangoman1966 - May 3, 2014 at 12:35 AM

You sure your not mark madden lol

  9. luvusa1 - May 3, 2014 at 1:00 AM

Nice to see the pathetic Pens fans commenting on a flyers article….what a bunch of losers….go cry..1-0 down

    • cheesesteak75 - May 3, 2014 at 9:37 PM

Didn’t know there was a rule that restricted comments to specific fans. Sounds like someone is a little cranky.
