And then there were 9: Avs eliminated

The Colorado Avalanche are likely suffering from a crushing feeling after dropping Game 7 to the Minnesota Wild 5-4 in overtime on Wednesday. Depending upon whom you ask, they might feel a lot like the Dallas Stars did when their season ended with a painful loss; blowing a lead in an elimination game hurts, yet many feel like the future is exceedingly bright for the Avalanche.

Things won’t be easy for the Avalanche. Many believe that the team got a lot of lucky bounces and rode a goaltending run that Varlamov will struggle to match in 2014-15. Then again, if Sakic and Roy continue to push the right buttons while this team’s enviable group of young stars continues to improve, this could easily just be a tough learning experience for a future NHL power.

Good series Avalanche! We rightfully deserved this one, though. You’ll be a real force to reckon with in the upcoming years.

    • strictlythedanks - May 1, 2014 at 1:02 AM

hate to call you out but you did say this was over after 5 games, have some faith in this team!! hyaaaaaa, go wild

      • mp1131211 - May 1, 2014 at 1:22 AM

I am a fan of little faith! It’s true. My fault, not the Wild’s. Go wild!!

  2. canucks30 - May 1, 2014 at 12:56 AM

10 seasons later, same result for Patrick Roy and the Avalanche:

  3. slickvb82 - May 1, 2014 at 12:57 AM

First off, congrats to the Avs on an awesome season! You should be proud of a great young team, the future is bright!

As for my MN WILD!!! El Nino comes through in the clutch. What a game, what a series! Bring on the Hawks!!!

  4. lordfletcher - May 1, 2014 at 12:58 AM

    Better team won..

6 games out of 7. No big deal

    • strictlythedanks - May 1, 2014 at 1:05 AM

      heeeeyaaaaaaa, go wild everyone

  5. chiadam - May 1, 2014 at 12:59 AM

I’d be more worried about an angry Patrick Roy

  6. jaythehelmetguy - May 1, 2014 at 1:01 AM

As a Wild fan, I think the Avs deserved to win that and it was hard fought series, hats off to Colorado and, god forbid they play us again, I hope they go a bit further next season.

    • strictlythedanks - May 1, 2014 at 1:04 AM

what? your joking? the refs did everything they could to keep the av in it

      • jaythehelmetguy - May 1, 2014 at 1:06 AM

That doesn’t change the fact that the Avs played their a$$es off

      • strictlythedanks - May 1, 2014 at 1:12 AM

totally agree with you there, they showed a ton of heart. This was a great series, and fortunately the team that played better instead of the team that the refs favored won the series.

      • phxyotes - May 1, 2014 at 1:32 AM

Are you retarded? They played almost 30 minutes of hockey with no penalties called at all. You Wild fans need to quit whining about refs and just enjoy the fact you have a good team making a playoff run.

      • lordfletcher - May 1, 2014 at 1:45 AM

What’s “retarded” is you commenting now on wild topics when you haven’t said anything prior. As if you’ve watched the entire series up till now.

        #headinsand

    • alfredosauce19 - May 1, 2014 at 2:52 AM

phxgoats – your comment proves that you did not watch any of the other 6 games because clearly you have no idea about ALL of the OTHER officiating blunders.

      • phxyotes - May 1, 2014 at 8:35 AM

I watched every game you dopes. I live in Denver and I root for the home teams. Well except the Broncos, they can suck some D. The refs weren’t perfect but to sit here on a public forum and accuse the NHL of “fixing” a series like it’s the WWF or something is just idiotic.

  7. barkar942 - May 1, 2014 at 1:01 AM

I personally was rooting for the Avs, but after the reffing mess that let the Avs win game 5, I feel the correct team won the series.

  8. credible316 - May 1, 2014 at 1:02 AM

In the words of a the LEGEND Ric Flair, WHHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Congrats Avs on a great season and series. Our division is without a doubt the toughest and best.

    On to Chicago! GO WILD!!!

  9. peopletrains - May 1, 2014 at 1:02 AM

Correction: They blew four leads tonight.

  10. vstar1us - May 1, 2014 at 1:05 AM

Well the Wild played against 10 players on the ice the whole series. Six with the Aves uniform, and four in the strips. The NHL needs to review the refs ownership of these clowns…..

    Dude. What the hell?

  12. hockeyfan11 - May 1, 2014 at 1:06 AM

Could not have scripted this series any better. Down 2-0 in the series, some questionable calls for both teams, then the Wild tie it at 2 a piece, Then go down 3-2, face elimination, and win a dramatic game 6 win to force a game 7. The wild stayed with the Aves the whole way, tie it with 2 minutes left, force overtime, and won on just a beautiful shot, not some garbage goal scrum in front of the net, just a nicely placed snipe to beat an amazing goalie in Varly to win it. Just an amazing series for both teams. WOW. Cant wait to see the Avs in a couple years. Just an amazing series. Go Wild!

    • strictlythedanks - May 1, 2014 at 2:04 AM

Im thinking its avscup in disguise….

      • strictlythedanks - May 1, 2014 at 2:05 AM

woops this was meant for the above comment

  13. nicofthenorthstar - May 1, 2014 at 1:08 AM

The right team won and Bettman must be pissed!
Talk about overcoming adversity! That is some impressive stuff.

  14. wildfan247 - May 1, 2014 at 1:08 AM

Holy crap, whatta series and whatta game!!! The Avs are going to be a tough team going forward, hats off. LETS GO WILD!!!

  15. whiteoutavalanche - May 1, 2014 at 1:09 AM

take four leads, lose it four times….ouch

    • jernster21 - May 1, 2014 at 2:38 AM

It’s disappointing but it is what it is. Chalk it up to a learning experience and move on. There’s a Central Division banner getting hung in the Pepsi Center next season. It was an incredible season and it turned into a game 7 playoff overtime at home – the only thing better would have been a win.

      • alfredosauce19 - May 1, 2014 at 2:54 AM

        sick banner plug

  16. whiteoutavalanche - May 1, 2014 at 1:10 AM

how many posts did the wild hit on their goals too??? Damn fine sniping…

  17. jpat2424 - May 1, 2014 at 1:10 AM

Very pressed with the Wild. Go Hawks!!

  18. nodindenver - May 1, 2014 at 1:12 AM

Stayed up late to give the Minny faithful their due. It is getting tough after the Ravens and Seahawks but, I was kind of hoping 2014 would not be as challenging, sports wise, as it has been. Hats off to the freakin Wild and their fans. Tonight, as in most of the rest of the series, looked like the carnival game of wack a mole; the Avs need a D like the Broncos! Varly was not very good, sure as heck not Roy like, and the ping of the crossbar will ring true into the morning. The best team won this series and the young Avs learn a bit about commitment. Sucks to say it but, the Avs met a buzz saw that had a failed playoff experience; and learned from it!

    • purpleguy - May 1, 2014 at 11:17 AM

Classy response — looks like we’ve got a future rivalry with two young teams.

  19. guitarisgood4u - May 1, 2014 at 1:17 AM

I had to laugh when the refs went back to review the OT winning goal, I imagined, “alright Toronto, is there any possible way we can overturn this one?”

  20. edinatherealhockeytownusa - May 1, 2014 at 1:17 AM

    Better luck next year

  21. hockeyflow33 - May 1, 2014 at 1:28 AM

That’s weird because every rational and well-thought opinion on here said the series was fixed so that Colorado would win.

    • mp1131211 - May 1, 2014 at 1:47 AM

      1) They called off the goal, talked to the nhl, and let it stand instead.
      2) They reviewed the game winning goal.

There’s lots of reasons to wonder here….

  22. phxyotes - May 1, 2014 at 1:35 AM

Even when the wild win the series they’re still crying about the refs. What a joke….

    • purpleguy - May 1, 2014 at 11:18 AM

Aren’t you whining about the fans of a team that at least still has something to whine about?

    • tved12 - May 1, 2014 at 1:17 PM

Well d-bag, it’s going to get harder and harder to win as we go deeper into the playoffs. If the officiating continues to be this bad against the Hawks we have very little chance of winning. The reason Wild fans are making the observations that there were many missed calls in the series is because we’d like the league to take notice and maybe have a stern talking to with the refs.

Tell me if half the calls that went against the Wild happened to the ‘Yotes you wouldn’t have a gripe?

  23. helloname01 - May 1, 2014 at 1:38 AM

Turns out the avs are 1 line deep

  24. lordfletcher - May 1, 2014 at 1:47 AM

    Where is avscups ????

    • mp1131211 - May 1, 2014 at 1:49 AM

Passed out after he slammed another “victory” beer after the 4th goal.

      • lordfletcher - May 1, 2014 at 1:54 AM

        IALTO

    • clarke16 - May 1, 2014 at 2:58 AM

His mouth is full at the moment. He should be done soon… :)

  25. rgledz - May 1, 2014 at 1:58 AM

Avscup……absent as usual. Not to be seen until next season when he will undoubtedly be spewing trash from his garbage dumpster mouth. @phxyotes……..what time does your squad play on Friday????? #zipit

  26. shutton83 - May 1, 2014 at 8:37 AM

Suters play this whole series was absolutely game breaking, guy held the Wild in it late in the 3rd and OT, definitely played the best that I’ve even seen him. That being said great series by Colorado, margin of victory was very slim tonight and this could have gone either way (game 5 shenanigans withstanding). Future certainly looks bright for each team.

  27. salutethis - May 1, 2014 at 8:49 AM

Matt cook, wild MVP. Go hawks!

    • idonthavethebloodyoucrave - May 1, 2014 at 10:23 AM

Sad thing is, there’s a lot of truth to that.

      • tved12 - May 1, 2014 at 1:20 PM

I can’t wait til these two meet in the regular season next year so somebody can give Landeskog the beat down he deserves. Cooke made a terrible play but the Avs hands aren’t clean either.

    • purpleguy - May 1, 2014 at 11:20 AM

      Hawks MVP — Seabrook.
