If the Philadelphia Flyers or New York Rangers needed a two-win edge to advance to the next round, we might have to wait until July for this thing to be resolved, but as it is the Rangers were able to edge out Philadelphia 2-1 in Game 7.
In the end, the difference in this series was the second period of tonight’s contest. Those 20-minutes were a largely one-sided affair with Flyers goaltender Steve Mason being the only thing preventing this game from turning into a blowout.
The Rangers were able to beat Mason twice in that period thanks to Mats Zuccarello and Derick Brassard pulling off some great passes that were capitalized on by Daniel Carcillo and Benoit Pouliot respectively.
Philadelphia bounced back in the third period and Flyers forward Jason Akeson found the back of the net to make things interesting, but it proved to be too little, too late.
The Rangers are still undefeated in Game 7s that take place in Madison Square Garden, but they do have some concerns going forward. For one thing, they are now on an 0-for-21 slump with the man advantage, per NHL.com’s Brian Compton. Rick Nash is also still searching for his first goal of the 2014 playoffs, although he did have a strong game otherwise.
New York will play against the Penguins next for the first time since the 2008 playoffs when Pittsburgh beat them in five games.
