Habs-Bruins: embellishment already a hot topic

Apr 30, 2014, 11:44 AM EDT

Boston Bruins v Montreal Canadiens Getty Images

The players don’t start battling on the ice until tomorrow at TD Garden, but the latest postseason installment of the Montreal Canadiens versus the Boston Bruins has already set off a war or words on the interwebs.

In response to Habs blog Eyes on the Prize, which expects “embellishment to be a major part of Boston’s game plan” during the longtime rivals’ second-round series — and has gone to the trouble of providing video evidence to support its case —  here’s CSN New England’s Joe Haggerty with a rebuttal:

The proof is in the numbers, plain and simple. The Bruins were dead last in the NHL with 230 power play chances in 82 regular season games during the 2013-14 regular season, and were – yup, you guessed it – dead last in the NHL during the 2012-13 regular season with 122 power play chances during the lockout-shortened 48 season campaign.

In fact the Bruins have consistently ranked from 23rd-30th in the NHL for power play chances under Claude Julien because the Boston coaching staff preaches a non-diving philosophy, and it’s something that Julien, in particular, feels is disrespectful to the game of hockey. It also embarrasses the referees that are trying to do the right thing.

Which team led the entire league in power play chances last season, and had nearly twice as many with 203 power play chances in those 48 games? That’s right, it was Les Habitants.

Yep, this is going to be a fun series.

For what it’s worth, Bruins legend Ray Bourque went on Boston radio this morning and said: “If [embellishing] gets you a call, why not?”

We will now step aside and let the commenters tear this place apart below.

With any luck, the officials are already cognizant of this nonsense and will keep it in check from the jump.

    • drewsylvania - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:13 PM

Doubtful. It’s clear that the refs aren’t good at calling penalties when there isn’t a dive or injury-faking. It’s lame, but it’s why teams dive.

I’ll be happy if they call diving when Subban pulls one of his bad-ballet moves and pirouettes to the ice.

      • elduguay - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:50 PM

I think you meant: when Subban, Chara, Thornton and of course Marchand pulls one of their bad-ballet moves and pirouettes to the ice… Say what you want about Lucic being a dirty player (which he is!) but at least he does not dive all the time.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:28 PM

drew if you get the rangers remember I told you this the rangers have perfected it they are the best at it

      • drewsylvania - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:38 PM

@elduguay Right, but I won’t be happy if the B’s get called when they dive. :-p

    • titansbro - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:37 PM

They probably are already aware of this. The problem is they go in with a gameplan of looking for this crap, but when 20K morons in red & blue are screaming & spitting at you every time you ignore a dive you will probably wind up giving in & calling it.

    Go Habs Go!

    • drewsylvania - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:13 PM

      No Habs, no.

  3. toiletclown - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:57 AM

    http://wildlifeanimalz.blogspot.ca/2012/08/Giant-Anteater.html Marchand lookalike?

    • titansbro - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:39 PM

I’m a Bruin’s fan & I really don’t care too much for Marchand’s style of play, too Montreal-like for me. But even if I did like him, how can anyone argue that he isn’t ugly or he doesn’t have a giant schnoz?

      • imleftcoast - Apr 30, 2014 at 7:03 PM

How can anyone argue he isn’t a pale imitation of Zac Rinaldo?

      • sabatimus - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:14 PM

What’s the point? Who cares what he looks like? And leftcoast: how’s that elimination treating you?

  4. dboldave - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:00 PM

I really hope the refs penalize this right away if anyone from either team trys hard to sell a penalty. I’d really like the play of the game to be the story and not the refs calls and non-calls.

    • elduguay - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:53 PM

Problem is, if they call all the dives & embellishment penalties in the game, Montreal will have 5-7 pp per game and the refs will be accused of being biased…

  5. 101starmymedic - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:02 PM

What a pointless and stupid blog post. Crap posts like this hurt the game off hockey.

    • mrhogan88 - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:31 PM

The post was a joke. It was categorized under parody/humor. You shouldn’t take take it so seriously.

    • elvispocomo - Apr 30, 2014 at 5:52 PM

One could argue it’s diving that hurts the game hockey actually.

  6. montrealbbr - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:04 PM

Its a fact that the Bruins were embellishing more than anyone in the first round of the playoffs and I expect to see the refs watching for this. If that piece of trash Marchand gets high sticked, I wouldnt expect to see a hand in the air afterwards. I do worry that the Bruins will try to draw penalties like this because they dont have the skill or speed to play with Montreal 5 on 5.

    • drewsylvania - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:23 PM

Sheesh, you can’t be for real.

    • titansbro - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:28 PM

It’s posts like this that make me think people around Montreal really don’t have brains. Although, I guess I should at least be happy that his entire post wasn’t written in French.

      • drewsylvania - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:49 PM

Montreal’s a great city. Don’t want to know their hockey fans, though.

    • lordstanley65 - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:59 PM

Like Subban falling down when the ref skates past him?

    • dropthepuckeh - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:02 PM

Montreal is synonymous with diving. When the subject comes up in any NHL city, Montreal is the first place that is referenced. The fans applaud it and it is in line with the arrogance of a fan base which thinks they are better and smarter than everyone else. Unfortunately for Montreal, they have not been relevant in hockey for twenty years and as a result the diving and “drawing” penalties is the only reward they can enjoy to feed their smugness. When great teams such as LA, Boston and Chicago win with toughness and heart, Montreal fans are left with nothing to do but accuse them of diving, in some way hoping it deflects from the sad reality of their own team. No fan likes to see their own players dive and surely every team has players who do it, including Boston. Only in Montreal do you find complete denial and an utter lack of respect for the game, ironic given their insistence that they understand the game better than anyone. Kind of like how they accuse everyone of being thugs and goons while quietly assembling a roster which includes Prust, Parros, Moen, Weise, and Ryan White. Sad when they can’t keep up with their own narrative and sad that these tough players probably hate the other half of their team and the fact that they have to defend them and their antics.

      • drewsylvania - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:43 PM

How did you forget career cheapshot-artists Bourque & Emelin???

    • pepper2011 - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:07 PM

You realize the Bruins have been the best 5 on 5 team in the league for the last 3 years?

5 on 5 Goal differential. look it up.

until this year; their Power play had been sad. very sad. The year they won the Cup I don’t think they had a single PP goal in the playoffs.

      nice try though.

    • drewzducks - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:18 PM

In the 2012-13 shortened regular season Montreal led the NHL with 5 (Prust 2, Gallagher, Desharnais and Bouillon) of the 33 league-wide diving penalties called during the season. Vancouver had 3 and Boston had 1(Seguin).

      • elduguay - Apr 30, 2014 at 2:48 PM

What are you trying to say? The Bruins have been diving all year long. You just prove that the refs favor them.

      • lordstanley65 - Apr 30, 2014 at 3:04 PM

Eld, are you really that stupid or just trying to troll? Just so we know how to respond to you.

      • lordstanley65 - Apr 30, 2014 at 3:08 PM

Better still, if you are being sarcastic, the I apologize.

    • bildomatic - Apr 30, 2014 at 3:45 PM

When I initially read this I made a “HUH!?” face… Then I read who posted it, smiled and said yup… Sounds about right… Haha I’m sure both teams will have their “embellishment” moments, but I hope it doesn’t play a major role in the series and we can just enjoy some great hockey between two great franchises.

    • bsfan77 - Apr 30, 2014 at 4:45 PM

Before you run your mouth, check the stats on which teams have the most power plays. The Habnots have been in the top 5 in this stat for years now. They dont dive though…lmao!

    • sabatimus - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:16 PM

      BAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh, and Habs’ fans think every time one of their players goes down, it’s a penalty. The booing over nothing in that building is the loudest in the league.

  7. habhaters11 - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:14 PM

Montrealbrr your a tard nuff said

  8. stevequinn - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:18 PM

Montreal is a collection of thugs and actors. ‘Nuff said.

  9. hockey412 - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:18 PM

Boston also gets away with more non-calls than anyone in the league. That’d be your reason for not getting the penalties called in their favor. If diving was Montreal’s game plan under Julien, you can bet it is for Boston under Julien.

    • drewsylvania - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:25 PM

Assuming you’re correct, they also had far fewer power plays than anyone in the league. So, not a big deal at best.

    • montrealbbr - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:46 PM

You are right! I saw so many crosschecks and headshots that didnt get called in the Detroit series alone. I hope the refs dont miss things like this against Montreal. I would hate to see our cup chances ruined down the line because that big idiot Lucic takes out one of our top 6 guys.

      • dboldave - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:55 PM

I also noticed that one time, Marchand distracted the referee while Chara pulled some kind of dust out of his pants and blew it right into Howard’s eyes! Then Marchand skated away, the Bruins scored a goal and Bobby the Brain handed Lucic a chair to crack over the head of Datsyuk! PANDEMONIUM!!!

      • sclairebear - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:56 PM

Nobody’s cup has a chance with Lucic around!

      • pepper2011 - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:15 PM

Can you post some of the cross checks and headshots? I don’t remember Detroit complaining about them. I also don’t remember anyone on the Bruins taking out a top 6 forward on Det.

how can you whine; when the team and fan base that played the Bruins doesn’t feel that way?

The Lucic/Dekeyser thing was weak, but certainly was more a douchey thing.

Your cup chances are ruined because you are vastly over matched.

      • elduguay - Apr 30, 2014 at 2:59 PM

montrealbbr, you clearly didn’t watch the other series. Crosschecks & headshots pretty much describes all the Western Conference’s series so far. The refs have put the whistles away for the playoffs. If this continue, the B’s will have a serious advantage in round 2 as Montreal cannot play that style of play.

      • spokeb - Apr 30, 2014 at 9:32 PM

Oh trust me. The refs wont miss anything in montreal’s favor. They are the stepdaughter of the league. Pansies. Wondering…..are the going to arrest Chara again this year? ROTFLMYA

obviously, you haven’t been around long as most regulars know the screen name.
Whatever, you’re just taking up space with your inane comments.

Must suck to have the best player in the world and only one Cup to show for it. Troll Troll and troll some more.

  10. the8man - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:22 PM

Yes. I agree. This series has already been hyped to the max.

Oh…wait. You mean skaters acting as if the contact was more severe or egregious in an attempt to draw a penalty….

  11. khar9 - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:23 PM

Slow team less penalties drawn , fast team more penalties drawn

    • elduguay - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:58 PM

Hey someone who understands hockey and stats! They are quite rare on this website.

    • pepper2011 - Apr 30, 2014 at 2:58 PM

The Bruins aren’t slow by any means. Krug, Bartkowki, Hamilton all fly. FLY. Miller and Boychuk are average to above average; certainly no slower than Emelin or Markov. I think I am not giving Miller enough credit either. Chara isn’t fast, but he doesn’t need to be, never has been and it hasn’t seemed to be an issue.

Iginla isn’t fast, and Eriksson isn’t either but other than that… who is slow? Eriksson is weird too. he slows everything down on purpose; like Krejci.

Lucic isn’t slow by any means. He isn’t a burner; It takes him a bit longer to get going, but he has VERY good straight line speed.

Also – speed is overrated. It’s puck possession which the B’s dominate.

have fun learning about Carl Soderberg this series.

NOW – you know something about hockey.

      • sabatimus - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:17 PM

And Paille appears to be coming back.

  12. numbcracker2109 - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:30 PM

All teams dive at some point or another, but the Canadians do it more than anyone else,by a mile, and have been for a loooong time.

  13. titansbro - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:34 PM

I totally expect the Habs to execute their gameplan of embellishment. It happens. We can complain about it all we want but it’s what they do. Time to accept it & hope the Bruins don’t get caught up in the nonsense. I really hope Marchand doesn’t pull this crap too because if we’re being honest with ourselves, he’d fit right in on that team with his antics. I expect there to be officiating issues in this series, especially in Montreal where they have 20K fans yelling at the refs to call a penalty every time someone falls down or bumps the boards. They just have to play through the garbage. If they can put all of that crap to the side & just play through it, then the Bruins should wipe the floor with Montreal as they are the superior team. But if there is any way for the Habs to win, it’s by getting the Bruins off their game & into their charades. And they are damn good at it.

    • numbcracker2109 - Apr 30, 2014 at 3:03 PM

I think Marchand will go down a little easy from time to time but he is a play first/flop second kind of guy. Montreal trains their players to do it the other way around. And I think people lump marchands occasional dive with his agitating style, they’re two seperate animals. I want him playing chippy, pissing Montreal off, taking shots after the whistle. When he’s doing that it means his offense is going.

      • Moop - Apr 30, 2014 at 3:32 PM

Marchand’s diving attacks come in bursts. He’ll have one game where he flops all over the place but then it usually goes away for a while.

Luckily, the playoffs are usually where the whistles go away and we get to see lots of five on five- nobody should be getting many easy calls through diving, whether its the Canadiens or the Bruins.

    • sabatimus - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:19 PM

Because the site hadn’t loaded properly, I accidentally hit report comment. My bad. Wish the site offered me a chance to take it back.

  14. nunan - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:38 PM

Montrealbbr did you read the post and the factual evidence it laid out for why the Bs aren’t guilty of this? Clearly you didn’t. Also the Bs are, and have been, the best 5 on 5 team in the league. How about you stick to facts and not post BS about how you wish things were. Not reality

    • titansbro - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:40 PM

Yeah didn’t they have the best 5-5 goal diff in the league this year by a fairly wide margin?

  15. crusty14 - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:39 PM

If Marchand or anyone gets high sticked I expect a penalty to be called! What a stupid post!

    • thesportsjudge - Apr 30, 2014 at 5:23 PM

Sadly, you are 100% correct. Not sure of why so many thumbs-down. Haggerty is too big a “homer” for me to have kept reading his “articles” on csnne.

      • sabatimus - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:20 PM

He probably got thumbed down for 1) going to the puerile weight insult, and 2) being pitpenguinsrulez.

That said, Haggerty is one of the worst writers in New England.

  17. pats2001 - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:52 PM

it’s hilarious that a couple stupid recent incidents by marchand and i hate to say it, even chara, have given the frog media any sort of ammo about this topic. but it is what it is…marchand acts like a moron sometimes and in the digital media age everything gets noticed and amplified

and i’m sure its fun for commenters like hockey412 to make asinine comments about diving being part of julien’s game plan. but anyone that has been watching the Bruins play over the last 7-8 years knows that it’s not condoned. if it happens, and it has happened from time to time over 8 years, it gets dealt with real quick

lastly, this is the type of nonsense that gets talked about when there is such a lag in between rounds. can’t wait for them to just play so we can focus on the actual games

    • drewzducks - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:26 PM

412 is a raving Pens fan. You’ll have to excuse his fixation on the Bruins, he can’t be helped.

      • dropthepuckeh - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:41 PM

Yeah, kind of funny though too. He’s attacking Julien after watching how inept his own coach looks at this point. Given the fact that the Pens could be facing a bloodbath with the Flyers I almost feel bad for him and understand his anxiety and need to lash out.

  18. scobie1 - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:56 PM

Either team could take lessons from the Rangers. Those guys jolt their head back, drop sticks & hold their wrist, do 10 point dives like no one else in the league. It’s a disgrace. I thought I was watching a soccer match.

  19. joey4id - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:58 PM

Who cares? Seriously! You’re all a bunch of whiners. Let the boys play, and let the refs call the game. There are rules in place that help refs call a player for diving… it’s called diving/embellishment. Can’t you just enjoy the game as a whole?

64.1 Diving / Embellishment – Any player who blatantly dives, embellishes a fall or a reaction, or who feigns an injury shall be penalized with a minor penalty under this rule.

You sound like a bunch of squawking chickens in a hen house.

    • joey4id - Apr 30, 2014 at 2:46 PM

14 squawking chickens just thumbed me down. Shocking.

    • sabatimus - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:30 PM

What, precisely, did you expect when you call everyone on here “a bunch of whiners”?

  20. govtminion - Apr 30, 2014 at 12:59 PM

I’m speaking as a ‘bleeds black and yellow’ Bruins fan here.

BOTH teams do this stuff. ALL 30 teams pull the embellishment, diving, ‘is the ref looking?’ kind of stuff. NO TEAM is a perfect, white-hat organization that never does anything wrong. So please, whether you’re a Habs fan, B’s fan, whatever, please- stop making us all look bad by claiming your team is perfect and innocent, and stop claiming the other one is any better than your own.

We might not like it, but it’s part of the game- for everyone.

    • micasa81 - Apr 30, 2014 at 1:46 PM

    • sabatimus - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:29 PM

I’m not sure what’s worse, the fact that the opinions were thought and shared or that they haven’t been deleted and the commenters banned.

    • pastabelly - Apr 30, 2014 at 2:08 PM

      • comeonnowguys - Apr 30, 2014 at 2:32 PM

Just because it’s not on youtube doesn’t mean it’s not there. I know that’s crazy talk, but Youtube is not the Wikipedia of video.

Some do it more than others, and some teams only have a player or two (Marchand, Tarasenko) who do it, but it’s true. Every. team. dives.

      • bakedbees - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:26 PM

It’s amazing that even the people who head-snap to draw a high-stick don’t come close to the head-snap reaction that Crosby does when you get a stick anywhere near the top of the logo and higher.

  25. rbbbaron - Apr 30, 2014 at 2:48 PM

The worst part about Joe Haggerty’s ‘rebuttal’ (other than the fact that it doesn’t speak a whole helluva lot to the issue of diving specifically) is that there are sure to be people dumb enough to buy it and repeat it

  26. JB (the original) - Apr 30, 2014 at 4:32 PM

Can someone explain to me how the penalty(s) called in the Wild/Av’s game 6 worked? Wild get called for a tripping, Av’s get called for embellishment–on the same play. How, exactly does/can that even happen?

    • comeonnowguys - Apr 30, 2014 at 5:16 PM

I personally can’t remember a time when embellishment was called where embellishment was called by itself. I’m sure there are.

Also, in what I’ve watched so far this post season, I don’t remember a single call for diving at all.

Both of these fan bases see the world through glasses tinted in their team colors (or colours)… but for the Habs, who have elevated the dive to an art form, to call out the B’s is pretty funny. Seriously – if it is obvious (like 63 grabbing the wrong knee) you really aren’t very good at it. But the real test of a master is making it look real and getting the calls. The stats speak for themselves.

Fan bases see the world through glasses tinted in their team colors(colours?) NO WAY!!!!

it is time again to let the habs dive and the Bruins to play their game. Good old time hockey. Just let it play out.
It’s too bad the likes of subban have tarnished the habs name. Personally i hate the habs. I’ve been a Boston Bruins fan for 55 years, but you have to respect (or HAD to respect) the canadiens of past for their achievements. Now they have stooped to this new tactic that has frankly gotten them nowhere. Grow up and play big boy hockey folks. It starts with the coach. I guess if your name is Michelle your team will play like a bunch of michelles.

I’ll probably be lambasted for this, as someone usually is in the comments when they don’t comment with a bias), but this series truly lies with the refs. The must put the hammer down, and set the precedent early that embellishment calls will be made in these games.

Montreal has a strong reputation for diving, they may just be the poster boys for it. Boston, even as a Bruins fan, I would never deny how cheap and dirty the team can be. Lucic can be a rotten SOB, Marchand would fit right in on the Canadian diving team, and Thornton is no saint either.

This series is going to come down to the inconsistencies of the officials, what gets called one minute but not the next.

Very likely. Though I expect the refs to be handing out unsportsmanlike conducts for shenanigans after the whistle more than for diving.

They say the same thing and repeat year after year. But when I watch the game there nothing, all the same.

  32. cutelittleguy02 - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:18 PM

It s all about him Claude Julien, because he hates Montreal and then he drags everybody into his mind game. So if he lost he will say again all because of the refs like everybody else. I just want hockey to finish ASAP. And then the World Cup in summer, it s going to be more fun. Hate winter now. Too long and too cold this year.

“embellishment to be a major part of Boston’s game plan”

Well, I suppose the Habs WOULD be experts on knowing exactly what embellishment is and how to do it.

  34. cutelittleguy02 - Apr 30, 2014 at 11:45 PM

Claude Julien means the only team know how to play hockey is Boston Bruins, other teams, nothing. They played tough last year and lost to Chicago – 2 goals in the last minute. Then the Boston fan who you think they are, booed at Gary Bettman. Wow . Advice for Bruins , don t repeat this year. And Montreal fans will always boo at Chara, nothing change that. Be prepared Chara , they all waiting to boo at you in Montreal as loud as you never heard before. You don t like it, change your channel

    • spokeb - May 1, 2014 at 8:51 AM

Really? Do you think that bothers Chara? Just dont arrest him for playing tough hockey….:-) He gets boo’d in better places than montreal. Jealous people like to hate…..fact. Norris trophy candidate AGAIN. And you cant blame that on the refs or any diving garbage or any other poor excuse for losing year after year. Bring it on. habs play their style, Bruins play theirs and lets see who come out on top. Go B’s. Bring it back to Boston. this city hasn’t had a major sports championship in over 6 months now. Time for another.

What ever happened to the pure game of hockey when you went down when you were really hurt?

    • spokeb - May 1, 2014 at 8:51 AM

I hear that waddles. Play the game like men. Old time hockey.

Boston diving? Diving is a big part of Montreal’s game plan! You rarely see the diving penalty called, especially in the playoffs, but I do recall that in 2011 Montreal and Tampa Bay got so carried away with diving they finally were forced to make the calls. Even the NHL had to give them a warning.
