Report: With Mitchell hurt, Kings to recall Schultz

With Willie Mitchell‘s status for Wednesday’s Game 7 against San Jose up in the air, the Kings are reportedly going to recall veteran defenseman Jeff Schultz from AHL Manchester, per LA Kings Insider.

Schultz, 28, has been called up on occasion this year but failed to play a single game with L.A., spending almost the entire campaign with the Monarchs. It’s expected that, if Mitchell can’t go tomorrow, Matt Greene will draw into the lineup and Schultz will serve as the emergency defenseman.

So really, the big story here is Mitchell.

The veteran defenseman, who played over 19 minutes in each of the first five games of the series, only logged 10:04 in Game 6 after getting hurt midway through the second period (possibly while killing a San Jose 5-on-3 power play.)

Mitchell has been a good playoff warrior for the Kings over the last three years, providing big minutes on the Stanley Cup-winning team in 2012. This postseason, he leads all L.A. skaters in shorthanded time on ice per game (3:20) and has been instrumental in keeping the Sharks power play silent over the last two games — San Jose went 0-for-9 with the man advantage in Games 5 and 6.

Not surprisingly, Kings head coach Darryl Sutter was tight-lipped about Mitchell’s availability for Game 7:

I REALLY hope Matt Greene has to play. He is terrible. Hope that Mitchell’s injury is nothing too serious. He was injured when he blocked a shot right?

    • tronn25 - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:23 PM

The only thing terrible is you hoping for injuries. Absolutely classless, guy.

He actually sustained an “upper body injury” as a result of trying to decipher the majority of your comments. Listed as day-to-day with a note from the team doctor to stay away from the comments section of this site in any Sharks related thread.

Looks like Tortorella is going to have a golfing partner from SJ!

      • nightfireop - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:41 PM

read sjsharks66’s comment again, he didn’t mention anything about wanting someone to be injured. he only said that matt greene has been terrible in the series and as a shark’s fan, he hopes greene plays. he even mentions that he hopes it’s not too serious.

how did you interpret that as if he wants to see mitchell get hurt?

    • pirovash88 - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:30 PM

Wow, dude… Seriously, you’re beyond desperate at this point..

      • tronn25 - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:35 PM

Take a look at Johnny Knowledgeable’s quote here:

        http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/29/the-good-news-for-the-sharks-is/

“A King player could block a shot and hurt himself.”

Desperate, or your boy Superfan here is swinging for the fences?

  2. johnmr12 - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:05 PM

I hate to see anyone get hurt but I hope Mitchell can’t play because Greene is a better defenseman. In fact, Greene is better than Muzzin too. There won’t be any sharks standing in front of the net when Matt’s on the ice.

    • mweekes22 - Apr 29, 2014 at 10:30 PM

There’s a reason why matt greene has been a scratch recently. He takes ill advised penalties and he’s too slow to keep up with san jose’s quick forwards. The Kings don’t really have a choice but to play him if Mitchell can’t go which is what I expect and schultz wasn’t even good enough to stay on the roster this year. I’m a lifelong Kings fan but I’m a realist as well, if Greene plays the other 5 d-men are going to have to log a lot of minutes.

  3. sjsharks66 - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:29 PM

Are you being serious? Greene played during the 7-2 loss…he was a -4 in that game. Muzzin has only been positive this serious, while logging WAY more ice time than Greene had.

Yes, Greene has more of a physical presence in front of the net. The Sharks are the larger team though. If anything Greene will get too aggressive and take a penalty while clearing the net. While the Sharks power play had been disgusting as of late. There is always a chance they break the slump. If I was a Kings fans, after all they have done to come back, I would would be pretty disappointed if they lost from a PP goal created by the meat heat Greene.

That’s just my opinion. I am already guaranteed mass thumbs down and no real conversation just because of my name.

    • nightfireop - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:48 PM

well as far as the name goes, i mean you have pretty much established yourself as a flame-first ask questions later anytime there’s a kings article. but i don’t think that was the case here, i don’t see any malicious statements from your end and i dunno how other people read your post as if you were wishing someone harm.

    • cybernetikghost - Apr 29, 2014 at 8:08 PM

It’s not so much your name as it is your reputation for saying less than classy things. It’s funny because as much grief as kings fans have gotten for being classless, I don’t remember anyone saying that they were glad vlasic couldn’t play. I believe the correct order goes as follows: 1. Think 2. Type

      • sjsharks66 - Apr 29, 2014 at 8:18 PM

Well the Sharks didn’t forearm Mitchell in the back of the head…
I am pretty sure he blocked a shot. The injury is probably minor, like I wished it to be.

So congrats! Kings fans did not say they were glad Vlasic, a player hit illegally in the head by a Kings player, could not play.

      • cybernetikghost - Apr 29, 2014 at 8:38 PM

The only thing wrong with your sarcasm is that the sharks have been throwing their fair share of elbows and hits to the back of the heads of kings players. They aren’t making conversation because our players are still in. You can’t even backtrack right. “The injury is probably minor, like I wished it to be”? Do you hear how that sounds?

  4. sjsharks66 - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:37 PM

I never wished injury on anyone? It’s game 7 and one of the Kings best Dmen may not be able to play? Yeah, I really hope he does not play. That’s like if Thornton was questionable for game 7. You are trying to tell me that you wouldn’t hope he was out for that game?

Stop putting words in my mouth. I clearly said I hope his injury was not bad and tried to make a conversation about how he was injured. You know, showing concern for a player?

Apparently all you Kings fans saw was “I hope Mitchell dies. Hope all Kings fans never play hockey again! Mwuahahaha!”.

      see previous replies.

    • Professor Fate - Apr 29, 2014 at 7:45 PM

I would much prefer my team beat an opponent at full strength. Reduces the excuses.

    • mweekes22 - Apr 29, 2014 at 10:33 PM

Mitchell was trying to clear the puck on the 5-3 and dove to swat at it and he awkwardly twisted his knee.

  5. sjsharks66 - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:42 PM

Yeah, when players block shots sometimes they hit them. Causing a bit of labor. They won’t be able to defend as well on the PK. Talking about hockey with Kings fans is almost as bad as talking to a wall. They just assume everyone is out to get them.

    • nightfireop - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:51 PM

if the only kings fans you talk to are the obnoxious ones one PHT, yea, i see where you’re coming from. but like every team, there are good fans and bad fans.

    • cybernetikghost - Apr 29, 2014 at 8:16 PM

If this is about the PK, you might do better to just have the sharks work on their power play rather than hope a king gets hurt or “caused a bit of labor”. And how many walls have you talked to that were under the assumption that you were out to get them?

  6. sjsharks66 - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:53 PM

    nightfireop,

We have had a couple arguments and butt heads. I respect and appreciate that you saw there was no malicious intent in my comment.

    • nightfireop - Apr 29, 2014 at 6:21 PM

      *cheers*
if i was next to you, i’d say we’d talk it out over a beer after all the slugfests we’ve had.

but in the meantime…may the best, most determined team win tmrw.

      • blomfeld - Apr 29, 2014 at 9:46 PM

better yet … why don’t you two losers just get a room ?

      • cybernetikghost - Apr 29, 2014 at 11:42 PM

Hahahhahaha….. And to the victor goes the spoils

  7. sjsharks66 - Apr 29, 2014 at 5:55 PM

nightfireop, I am mainly talking about the ones on PHT. I have some friends who are Kings fans. Nothing but respect between both of our teams. Conversations usually end in “your team is going win.” , “no, no, no your team is going to win.” Ha!

  8. rocket1988 - Apr 29, 2014 at 6:24 PM

    @sjsharks66
Meat heat Greene? What did he do to you?Sleep with your girlfriend? The -4 he had in game two was deceiving at best. The Kings played 7 Dmen in that game and changes were shaky at best. One of his minuses was on a bad giveaway at neutral ice that Pavelski scored on a breakaway. You need to worry about your own team right now.

    • nightfireop - Apr 29, 2014 at 6:33 PM

we have plenty to worry ourselves. it’s still anybody’s series tmrw and sj’s sap center is going make game time very tough for the kings. it won’t be cake-ride at all.

if greene plays tmrw hopefully he plays good if it’s someone else, i hope that’s the right decision. however that -4 rating does stick out like a sore thumb.

  9. sjsharks66 - Apr 29, 2014 at 6:36 PM

Rocket, i called him that because of the way he plays. Physical and takes his fair share of penalties. Nothing more…
