Giroux: ‘We’ve come back all season long when it matters’

Apr 27, 2014, 4:40 PM EDT

Claude Giroux AP

The Philadelphia Flyers are now on the brink of being eliminated, but after losing Sunday’s game against the New York Rangers, the Flyers are determined to bounce back in Game 6.

“We’re not looking at it like it’s the last game of our season,” Flyers captain Claude Giroux said, per the Bergen Record’s Andrew Gross. “We’ve come back all season long when it matters.”

After all, this is a team that got off to a 1-7-0 start and still managed to make the playoffs.

On top of that, the Rangers and Flyers have traded wins throughout this series, with the Rangers consistently moving ahead by one contest only for the Flyers to tie it back up.

“This series is definitely not over,” goaltender Steve Mason added. “We are looking to getting back home and having a big game and bringing it back here.”

Game 6 will be on Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Center. If the Flyers win then they’ll have to play Game 7 on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

      Let’s Go Flyers!!!!

      • gnashty - Apr 28, 2014 at 11:18 AM

It’s all the way at the bottom so I’m going to post boost.

Two horrible coaching decisions made this series by Berube. #1 was starting Emery in game 3 over Mason. The next would be Hal Gill in the lineup over Gust in game 5. Gill missing an open net shot to tie it 1-1 was a massive play in this game. It goes from 1-1 to 2-0. The next would be he is so slow, he’s literally the slowest player on the ice at all times. Gust is a massive upgrade over Gill, and even Grossman in this series. They need someone fast and gust brings that! If they don’t put Gust in the lineup in game 6 they deserve to lose. (I’m not saying Gust is the savior obviously he isnt, but he gives much better play at the blue line than Gill can at this point of his career.)

Also – Hartsy has to be demoted to the second or 3rd line. G and V had their best game yesterday – Hartsy looked like Hal Gills tad bit faster brother.

      • cantstandstupid - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:04 PM

At first I was optimistic with Gill playing since he looked surprisingly good the final 2 games of the regular season considering he hasn’t played since the beginning of the season, but you are right, Gus needs to be in there for game 6. The Flyers need offense and Gus is more of a threat. I like Gill’s size, but he is not a threat on offense. Coburn screwed him with that pass in his skates too. It would have been nice if he took the body instead of trying to look for the puck, but it’s such a bang bang play.

I’d like to see Hartnell scratched, B. Schenn move up to the 1st line and activate Straka or Cousins to play with Vinny and Simmer. Not sure if they can do anything, but I’m sick of seeing Hartnell play like he wants to be golfing.

      • gnashty - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:17 PM

I wasn’t optimistic at all about Gill. The Flyers have looked slow on the most part on the defensive side and you replace Grossman with an even slower Gill? This isn’t 2009!!!! Gus will help this team on the offensive side and defensive side with his speed. He better be in the lineup.

Trust me, I know your feeling on Hartsy.. I have never really liked him – he isn’t a playoff performer and benefits by playing with Giroux and Vorachek. I hope they try and get rid of him after this season.

    LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!

  3. podevil - Apr 27, 2014 at 5:00 PM

Giroux is way over rated… He is one of the biggest problems the Flyers have…Cherry picker and a big distraction….

    • flyerspsu - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:07 PM

      Nope

    • mcphillthy - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:22 PM

Lmao. Hahahaha. And how can we take you seriously again after you make a statement like this?

    • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:42 PM

I’ve only seen two comments from you and both have been idiotic. You don’t finish 3rd in scoring (especially with the start he had) by accident. Like the entire team he has underperformed in the series, but he’s still got 58 points in 55 career playoff games. That’s not overrated.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:43 PM

Numbers don’t lie. Giroux is an elite player. I know it hurts your a$$ to say it….come on, say it.

      • cheesesteak75 - Apr 28, 2014 at 12:31 AM

Elite players win scoring titles and cups. Giroux has neither. Great player, yes. Elite, no. Now is time for him to shut up and play like an elite player!

      • 7mantel - Apr 28, 2014 at 9:19 AM

cheesesteak time to mature ; “elite players win titles and cups” I guess you never heard of Ted Williams ,Carl Yastrzemski , Dan Marino ,Dale Hawerchuk , Mats Sundin and Marcel Dionne just to name a few. All elite players who never won a WS, SB OR SC !

      • haterzinc - Apr 28, 2014 at 9:49 AM

Elite players usually score more than 30 goals. A feat CG has yet to accomplish.

      • dmacirish - Apr 28, 2014 at 12:54 PM

yeah – elite players and scoring titles. how did that work out for Ovechkin this year?

    • steelcity333 - Apr 27, 2014 at 7:04 PM

As a Penguins fan even I have to say you’re wrong. He’s not overrated and I love his competitiveness. I’m just tired of hearing the guy make guarantees. Just shut up and go win the game.

      • cantstandstupid - Apr 28, 2014 at 12:57 PM

As a Flyer’s fan, I hate to agree with a Penguin’s fan, but you are right. I first read the headline and I know it’s out of context since you don’t know what he said before and after, but I’d be a little more proud playing a complete 60 minute game instead of scrambling around the last 8 minutes in hopes to make it competitive. Being able to fight back to win is great especially after a few years back they would be down a goal in the first 2 minutes and it was pretty much a lock they would lose that game. I’m definitely going to have to drink while at the game on Tuesday….

    • theref55 - Apr 28, 2014 at 8:34 AM

3rd leading scorer in the league and not afraid of anything. How about that big time player Carcillo a healthy scratch Sunday. We sent his love Friday night with “PHuck Carcillo”. Wonder if God;s gift to hockey will be in the lineup Tuesday night – or cleaning jock straps after the game.

  4. bigwayne75 - Apr 27, 2014 at 5:04 PM

Sorry Giroux, you used your Cinderella story on game 4. It is over.

    • theref55 - Apr 28, 2014 at 8:36 AM

They still have a game Tuesday – right? Down 3-2 in Buffalo in 2011 – won game 6 in overtime then blewout the Sabres in game 7. 2010 – Down 3-0 in the series and win game 4 in overtime – rest of the series is history. 11 come from behind wins this year – most in the NHL. YEAH “BIG”wayne75 – sure its over…lmao… Keep the comedy coming.

  5. rushledger - Apr 27, 2014 at 5:26 PM

Giroux best player in the world! Yeah we have no reason to think he’s overrated after hearing that two years ago. Oh wait we have countless reasons to think that.

  6. har21441 - Apr 27, 2014 at 5:28 PM

    LOL giroux

  7. crazemastercraze - Apr 27, 2014 at 5:46 PM

Haha, “when it counted”. What the hell kind of answer is that?

  8. flyerspsu - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:11 PM

What’s with all the giroux hate? You guys laughed when he said the Flyers would make the playoffs, they did, you laughed when he guaranteed a game 4 win, they did, now he’s saying they’l bounce back and you guys still view that as a knock against him?

  9. President Charles Logan - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:45 PM

the thing is the flyers are getting outplayed , totally throughout the entire series so far. they arent really showing much ….. they cant keep up with the rangers speed, cycling or their forecheck
matter of fact this should have been over already had it not been for mason playing unconscious last game

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:47 PM

3-2 series. Yup, not showing anything at all.

      • President Charles Logan - Apr 27, 2014 at 7:18 PM

rags havent played all that well either , dont get too excited.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 7:24 PM

Yeah, I already said that in the other thread.

  10. broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:46 PM

Haters here can’t handle Giroux’s ginger awesomeness. When G makes a prediction it happens. See ya back at the Garden Ragheads.

    • President Charles Logan - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:47 PM

one accident goal when it was too late … lol @ hate… cmon broad. you’re better then that to say that

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:48 PM

That accident left Hank’s head looking like a NY subway turnstile.

    • cheesesteak75 - Apr 28, 2014 at 12:37 AM

“Haters here can’t handle Giroux’s ginger awesomeness.”
Sounds like someone wants to hold hands and dance.

  11. bobhpine - Apr 27, 2014 at 7:14 PM

Little ugly toothless ginger has a lot of optimism. He must not know the history of his sorry team. 1975.

    Losing is imminent.

  12. President Charles Logan - Apr 27, 2014 at 7:25 PM

this series has been lousy, not nearly as intense and physical as everyone predicted.

    • laxman1944 - Apr 28, 2014 at 11:49 AM

      Agreed pretty bland

Pitts’ series on the other had has been excellent and it fun to watch CBJ grow up with every game.

  13. phillyphannnn83 - Apr 27, 2014 at 7:33 PM

The biggest problem in this series is that the Flyers don’t hate the Rangers. This series may be breeding it but make no mistake, they’re definitely not treated the way the Pens are.

The second problem is that Berube is a rookie head coach(who got his team into the playoffs) and it’s showing. The Rangers are more controlled, more comfortable, they’re making cleaner, crisper passes, and are better organized. It’s going to take sheer will and heart to win this series.

I fully believe there will be a game 7.

Oh and the haters are comical. And that’s not a compliment.

  14. roryflyers - Apr 27, 2014 at 8:27 PM

Yeah leading the league in points over the past 4 seasons, so over rated.

    • theageofquarrel - Apr 28, 2014 at 4:54 AM

Which league? Because it sure as hell isn’t the NHL.

      • petersteelewannabe - Apr 28, 2014 at 11:40 AM

        Top 6 over last 4 years;

        Giroux 303 points
        St Louis 302
        Stamkos 285
        OV 285
        Kessel 278
        Malkin 270
        H Sedin 270

It isn’t that hard to look up stats Ageof.

  15. luvusa1 - Apr 27, 2014 at 8:55 PM

it was Lavy that said Giroux was “the best player in the world” not Giroux so get educated or STFU!

  16. toiletclown - Apr 28, 2014 at 6:21 AM

    This guy is a joke.

    • theref55 - Apr 28, 2014 at 8:32 AM

With a name like toiletclown living in the gutter of $hittsburgh – that says it all. Cindy and VAGINO goalless in their last 19 playoff games combined – now there is a joke!

      • mordock57 - Apr 28, 2014 at 10:42 AM

And yet, ahead in their series. Which would make you the joke. ;)

      • theref55 - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:53 PM

MORDOCK57 – bahahahaha… a lot of well planned thought in your comment… And as we know ahead means $hit in any series Chicago against the Blues. Kings coming back against the Sharks. Flyers not done at all… But keep your comedy and lack of knowledge coming… cute smiley face.

This series has been difficult to watch as a Flyers fan. They have been thoroughly outplayed every game, but still have found a way to win 2 games. It is amazing that they won 2 games in this series. Why was Hall Gill in that game. Personally, I would have went with Gus. It has been tough to see Giroux totally shut down by the McDonaugh/Girardi pair, although he looked a lot better yesterday. I think moving Schenn to the G line will help. Schenn hasn’t done much in the series either, but Hartnell was certainly bringing down G and Voracek. They have shown the capability to come back this year, and aside from being totally outplayed, I see no other reason to think that they will not come back again. They really need to punish the Rangers though at Wells Fargo Center with game 7 being the next day at MSG.

    • 7mantel - Apr 28, 2014 at 8:58 AM

They have tried punishing the NYR’s and it hasn’t worked ( They are not the Pen’s )

I love how every Ranger/Flyer article on here becomes a Flyer/Penguin bash fest. I would think the Penguin fans wouldn’t be all that happy with the way that Columbus has pushed them around. They are lucky to be up 3-2 and better start playing better quick or it won’t matter who they meet next.
