Flyers comeback bid falls short, Rangers lead series 3-2

Apr 27, 2014, 3:01 PM EDT

The New York Rangers wanted to make life harder on Flyers goaltender Steve Mason after they were held to one goal in Game 5. They succeeded this afternoon in their 4-2 victory over the Flyers.

Mason stopped just 18 of 21 shots and that’s not including the break he arguably caught when a fast whistle spared him from conceding another goal.

The Rangers climbed to a three goal lead with thanks to Marc Staal, Brad Richards, and Dominic Moore, but the Flyers made things interesting before time ran out.

Vincent Lecavalier got Philadelphia on the board with just 33 seconds remaining in the second period.

Claude Giroux netted his first goal of the playoffs to narrow the lead to one, but only 1:29 minutes remained in the contest. If nothing else, that goal prevented Ricahrds from getting his second game-winner of the series. The Rangers forward set the NHL record for the most game-winning goals in a single postseason with seven when he was with the Tampa Bay Lightning during their 2004 Stanley Cup run.

St. Louis also picked up an assist for the Rangers, which means that three of the main contributors for that 2004 Lightning squad finish the game with a point for the first time in this series.

Rangers forward Brian Boyle collected the empty netter to squash the Flyers’ comeback.

New York now has a 3-2 series lead. Game 6 will be played in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

another dominant performance by the rangers. would be nice to close out the series tuesday.

    • theblatche - Apr 27, 2014 at 5:08 PM

Yes, winning it in Philly might honestly be just as sweet as to win it in NY, ok sorry but i’ve grown a dislike for the Philly fanbase. D.Moore’s goal was such a damn beauty today, huh? Wow, that guy is a Alain Vigneualt type of player, he clearly likes the system, found his comfort zone here and we should look to resign him because Im not used to getting all this production from our lower line and its good.

  2. maalea - Apr 27, 2014 at 3:06 PM

Rangers deserved to win, Chief you need to sit Gill and keep Hartnell on the 2nd or 3rd lines.

  3. phillyphanatic77 - Apr 27, 2014 at 3:08 PM

This game sealed it for me… time for Timonen to retire. That was just ugly top to bottom. That 4-2 score is ridiculously misleading. The Flyers were barely in it. I don’t understand what it is about those blue sweaters, as soon as the Flyers see em they lose all skill and ability to make a smart decision. Embarrassing effort.

  4. herc883 - Apr 27, 2014 at 3:09 PM

The oilers could’ve dominated the flyers the way they played today! Rangers should be worried that they only managed a 4-2 win over a team that played that poorly.

    • theblatche - Apr 27, 2014 at 5:28 PM

Dude shut up. Ever think the Rangers had something to do with it? At the end of the day, we’re one of the best defensive teams in the league, Flyers don’t like playing us, trust me. Thus far in the playoffs, we’re 2nd behind only Boston for letting up Goals against avg. And in regular season we were 4th in NHL at GAA. Meanwhile the Flyers are like convicts on ice, totally lack discipline, avg the 2nd most penalties in the NHL and they goon it up for a reason, they’re bigger. Thats about the only thing they’ve got on the Rangers. Open your eyes

      • flyerspsu - Apr 27, 2014 at 5:46 PM

        Take it easy there bud

      • maalea - Apr 27, 2014 at 8:25 PM

Convicts on ice??? Really dude? Don’t be a douche.
This series may be the only one without any vicious stick work, headhunting hits along the glass etc. The Rangers aren’t doing any cheap stuff but the Flyers are playing clean hockey as well.

      • homieshome - Apr 27, 2014 at 9:15 PM

Lol i’m new around here. But I know when some low-class Flyers fan is taking a jab at my team. And you take it easy bicch and worry about yourself,

      • theblatche - Apr 28, 2014 at 12:36 PM

Malea are you on drugs? Game 5 was the only clean game from the Flyers, every single other game they’ve been dirty.

    • homieshome - Apr 27, 2014 at 9:17 PM

Hypocrite, you’re doing the same thing to me that I did to him because you’re a Flyers fan. Fuqq the Flyers, your fanbase is disgusting, you dont deserve to be shown respect.

  5. WillIEverSeeACupInMyLife? - Apr 27, 2014 at 3:10 PM

Kept thinking Flyers were playing terrible…nope. Rangers playing great. Rangers should have swept this series, don’t know how Flyers won 2.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 3:20 PM

Flyers won two because the Rags are not as good as they seem. The matchup is just terrible for us and we are still managing to stay in it. My problem is that the Flyers can only manage 10-15 minutes of solid hockey at any given point before they start with the brain farts. The PP was abysmal to start with. When they do manage to put together 40 or so minutes together they win games, but that is not going to be good enough in the playoffs.

With that said I’m sure they’ll rebound Tuesday night and send it back to MSG for a game 7.

      • billiam55 - Apr 27, 2014 at 3:44 PM

when rangers use their speed and move the puck out of their zone with those long passes, it gives flyers problems. also rangers defense has been solid. theyve done a great job with the giroux line. if u think about the games the rangers lost they were close. if the rangers do that on tuesday, epsecially staying of the PK, they should win the series.

      • theblatche - Apr 27, 2014 at 5:12 PM

Come on Broad, Rangers have been a step ahead of the Flyers throughout the series and the year as well. We are the better team,, you can argue by how much but I do feel they are the better team. Even in our losses, we outplayed you. Though ironically enough, the only game that the Flyers outplayed the Rangers was game 3 and Rangers won that one.

      • c9castine - Apr 27, 2014 at 11:36 PM

im not sure what your trying to say. apparently your team cant play with a team that isnt as good as it seems? so your team sucks?

thats correct. flyers fans thought this series was going to be easy. you still think they arent going to lose game 6.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 11:52 PM

Perhaps reading comprehension is not your strong suit. Can’t say it surprises me.

I never said this or any series was going to be easy, but maybe you should worry about your Pens and their struggles instead of focusing on Philly. Then again we won’t talk about what your really worried about….The Flyers advancing to the second round and terrorizing Beach Ball Fleury…again. That is IF you make it past the Jackets.

      • c9castine - Apr 28, 2014 at 12:09 PM

wait wait…what struggles? have lost two overtime games and have never trailed in the series.

lol…pens are winning their series. you drove home my point yourself…your talking about terrorizing fleury in the second round if the pens make it yet flyers are losing 3-2 and have looked terrible and have trailed the series every other game. pens are winning 3-2, won the 3 most important games of the series thus far, lost two 1 goal overtime games, and posted over a 2-1 shot margin in a pivotal game 5.

you never know what will happen from here, but your hardly in a position to talk

Rumor has it there are long lines at the local sporting good stores in Filthy. Golf season is about to begin and the goon- lovers need to stock up.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:39 PM

I hear the Malkin and Crosby golf jerseys will be coming out next week at a discounted price.

      • President Charles Logan - Apr 27, 2014 at 7:28 PM

lol@ you focusing on the pens… … they live rent free in your mind huh?

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 7:34 PM

Nah dog, just responding to one of your fellow Pens cronies.

      • whammy71 - Apr 27, 2014 at 7:49 PM

Hey Einstein…..whose up and whose down? Or are you only counting goon-like plays?

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 10:32 PM

Good luck riding Beach Ball Fleury into the next game. WHAMMY!!!

Flyers had no business in the playoffs to start with! Had a lucky run at the end of regular season is all it was! Imploding now!

    • flyerspsu - Apr 27, 2014 at 5:51 PM

38-20 since since the 4-10 start, not quite a lucky late run to get in, the flyers are a flawed team but to say they didn’t deserve to make the playoffs is ridiculous

    • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:35 PM

Look the Flyers have been terrible in this series (and against the Rangers the past 3 years), but to say they didn’t deserve a playoff spot is absurd. They weren’t even a wildcard team. They trailed the Rangers for 2nd by two whole points. The Flyers have talent (atleast at forward and in net), the Rangers are just a terrible matchup for them. I sincerely wish Columbus had hopped us and we were playing the Pens.

      • dschrode2013 - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:30 PM

And Columbus trailed the Flyers by one whole point. And if the Flyers had lost one more game than they had or Columbus and Detroit each won one more game than they had, the Flyers wouldn’t even be in the playoffs. Just saying that the difference between 2nd and not in the playoffs was only 2 wins or losses.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:38 PM

Numbers must not be your strong suit, eh? You do know there is a point system in the NHL?

  10. phillyphannnn83 - Apr 27, 2014 at 7:47 PM

This series breaks down to coaching. Berube is a rookie head coach and it’s showing.
That being said, he’s done a helluva job getting them there considering his lack of experience. It’s funny how the haters are completely blind to anything positive regarding the other team. I think the Rangers fans have an inferiority complex because we don’t care about them, while we despise the Pens.

    • President Charles Logan - Apr 27, 2014 at 8:43 PM

you dont care about them?? lol 77 you’re obviously off your rocker and not thinking clearly … take a break for the rest of the night and come back fresh tuesday buddy!

  11. nashernation - Apr 27, 2014 at 8:40 PM

The Blue Shirts had their fore check and cycling game on point today. JT had an excellent game but Moore was the first star of the game. St Louis had a solid two way game going. They looked real fast today..

  12. laxman1944 - Apr 27, 2014 at 8:59 PM

Still think this will go seven games………sorry Big Blue you will have to play two more games.

  13. luvusa1 - Apr 27, 2014 at 9:00 PM

shut up Whammy with the “philthy” reference you moron. Now go back to mommies basement.

With all the ahem ” positive” conversation going back and forth I thought I’d add this story about Ranger Dom Moore and the loss if his wife to a rare cancer . A heartbreaking, but true love story . What a game , and series he’s having. He’s certainly deserving and ,whether a Flyers or Rangers fan , if this doesn’t touch you, not much will.

  16. kastout11 - Apr 28, 2014 at 9:16 AM

I think we all get caught up in the series and people normally don’t think about the personal lives of the players. I know that throughout the series, I had a strong dislike for Moore, but we have to put things in perspective and realize that it is just a game. They’re not all millionaires that don’t have problems. That said, I am still a Flyers die hard and am hoping for a game 7 and the Flyers advancing to the second round, although I am not as confident as I normally am.
