Wild hold off late Avalanche push to even series at 2-2

Apr 25, 2014, 12:16 AM EDT

It should’ve been a blowout. But it wasn’t, at least not on the scoreboard. Nonetheless, the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche are heading back to Denver in what is now a best-of-three series.

The Wild, which trailed this series 2-0 as it transitioned back to Minnesota, thoroughly outplayed the Avalanche on Thursday in front of a record crowd of 19,396 fans, but came away with a 2-1 result on the score board when it was over. The play of Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov was the only reason this game was as close as it was.

He made 30 saves in a losing cause. He was beaten early on the first period on a perfect slap shot under the cross bar from Jared Spurgeon and again by Charlie Coyle in the second period.

Coyle was the benefactor of a lucky home bounce, as the puck hit off the glass behind the Colorado net and came right out to the Minnesota center, who whacked it past Varlamov.

The Avalanche couldn’t generate much of anything. Ryan O’Reilly scored the lone goal for Colorado, ending Darcy Kuemper‘s shutout streak in this series at 124:35, as per Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

As a team, the Avalanche was held to 12 shots on goal. In the entire game. They were in the single digits late into the third period, when head coach Patrick Roy pulled Varlamov for the extra attacker with about 2:35 remaining in regulation and the Avalanche got a late power play.

in the two home games the wild out shot the aves 78-34 this series should be 3-1 but they gave away game one

    • slickvb82 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:22 AM

      yep

  2. slickvb82 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:22 AM

Another dominating game by the Wild!!! Granlund is a fricken stud!!

    GO WILD!!!

  3. lordfletcher - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:24 AM

    Domination!!!!

    Wild in 6

  4. hardkor07mn - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:26 AM

    12 shots hahahahahahahahahahaha

    • getadealdonealready - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:29 AM

Didn’t see final numbers but it had to be close Wild’s scoring chances vs Avs SOG

  5. jonnyhammersticks - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:27 AM

I know some people have an aversion to advanced statistics so to put it more simply, you’re not going to win many games getting out-shot 32 to 12.

    • dakidmatt01 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:04 AM

Lol didn’t your broncos get thee biggest blowout in Super Bowl history by the Hawks lol and for one are Lynx have won 3 wnba titles.

      • comeonnowguys - Apr 25, 2014 at 9:36 AM

        Wow. That is almost relevant.

And by “almost,” I mean “not at all.”

      • avscup - Apr 25, 2014 at 11:38 PM

Two Super Bowls and two Stanley Cups. How many any things in MN? Cups…0, Super Bowls…0! Enjoy the Lynx!!!

  6. getadealdonealready - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:27 AM

Good all-around game, big win. Quick notes:

Granlund is so fun to watch at both ends of the ice.

Koivu played well, and had a big clear late in the game

Haula has played better than I ever could have imagined when the wild drafted him

Kuemper mentally strong to stay in a game where he saw so few stops and able to make a couple key saves late, even though Granlund may have had more saves/blocks than him in the 3rd period.

    NICE WIN BOYS!

  7. hardkor07mn - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:28 AM

Varlamov is the ONLY reason this series isn’t over. GO WILD!!!!

    • lbeezyse - Apr 25, 2014 at 9:55 AM

Varly is the only reason the Avs were as good as they were this year. They have a fantastic first line, but after that they are average at best with poor defense. Varly is clearly the team MVP for the Avs.

      • avscup - Apr 25, 2014 at 11:42 PM

Avs are missing Duchene(leading scorer) and the D scored the most goals in the NHL for D. Varly has played well, the rest of the team meh. It’s still a 2-2 series and we have home ice!

The wild have played their best and still are only tied.

  8. mp1131211 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:28 AM

    McKinnon who?

    • getadealdonealready - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:31 AM

I’m sure he thinks he/they shut themselves down again.

  9. hardkor07mn - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:32 AM

Funny no Avs fans on here tonight. Wonder why?

    • dolphincult - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:15 AM

There is avs fans here but not much to say that hasn’t been already other than hat I mentioned after game 2…….it will get interesting when the wild get the matchups they want with last line change after the whistle. Lets not get carried away with the Kuemper talk, lets see how he does on the road when the avs again can dictate the line matchups

      • lordfletcher - Apr 25, 2014 at 8:30 AM

I’m not worried about the line matchups anymore or at least not like I was for game two. I would have to think Yeo and Wild brass have a game plan in place, like dump in change.

If I were you, I’d be worried about how badly that young team has played in the last 120 minutes. Landeskog and Statsny have been ghosts outside of the penalties they committed.

Varlamov can’t realistically stay at this pace so the AVS transition game will need to step up as it gas been gawd awful.

Wild win game 5 four-two and the series is over.

  10. peopletrains - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:45 AM

Awfully lopsided game despite only 2-1. Wild have found their groove the last 2-3 weeks in creating solid scoring chances. Now they just need someone who can finish more consistently (Moulson getting stuffed point blank is getting old).

    • comeonnowguys - Apr 25, 2014 at 9:37 AM

That’s pretty much the Avs playstyle. Try to keep the quality chances down and let Varlamov take care of the rest. That’s how nearly every Hawks/Avs game went this year.

  11. luvmnsports2012 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:47 AM

Nice win boys! Dominated the avs again. Nice to see Granny serviced that game with all the hits they were throwin to him. Keumper played great. GO WILD!!!

  12. rgledz - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:47 AM

Yesterday I couldn’t look at a Wild story without seeing Avscup spewing garbage at every turn. I wonder where he is tonight??? Conspicuously absent.

    • slickvb82 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:54 AM

      haha right

    • strictlythedanks - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:12 AM

      yessir where is that bytch?????

      • avscup - Apr 25, 2014 at 11:58 PM

It’s Friday douche. Get a life. Played 18, went to dinner and watched the hawks. Gonna be seeing them next. Snow all gone there? How them skeeters?

    • alfredosauce19 - Apr 25, 2014 at 2:49 AM

avscup i know you are crying but not to worry… you have only been a fan for 4 days!!! By tha way!, (Igor Tosh.O) everyone in MN knows that you can’t lace skates.

      • avscup - Apr 25, 2014 at 11:47 PM

Jizz sauce. Been two both Avs Cups. How many you been to in MN. The only parade you get to ride in is the Fourth of July parade. You ridin’ the short bus again this year?

    • avscup - Apr 25, 2014 at 11:45 PM

      Boning ur girl!

  13. credible316 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:49 AM

As quick as the momentum changed in this series, it could change in a heartbeat again.

Keep your boot on their throats Wild!

    • mp1131211 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:58 AM

Absolutely. Duchene is due back soon. It’ll be a different team with his skill and speed.

  14. bacon78 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:50 AM

All you guys have are the Minnesota Wild your football team sucks and so does your baseball team go avalanche

    • slickvb82 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:57 AM

don’t forget about the Lynx! :)-

      GO WILD!!! DOMINATION AGAIN TONIGHT!

    • ialtoguy - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:04 AM

      The Seahawks scored again

      • credible316 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:09 AM

        ALWAYS…

    • rgledz - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:17 AM

How embarrassing for you…..you’re on a hockey site following your teams pathetic loss and you’re bring the Broncos and Rockies into this???? Weak. By the way, the Nordiques won the cup, they just happened to be playing in Colorado at the time.

      • avscup - Apr 25, 2014 at 11:49 PM

Well the Mo Stars didn’t win and neither have the Wild.. or Queens. Sucks being a sports fan in minty!

    • alfredosauce19 - Apr 25, 2014 at 2:51 AM

      IALTO

avscup i know you are crying but not to worry… you have only been a fan for 4 days!!! By tha way!, (Igor Tosh.O) everyone in MN knows that you can’t lace skates.

  15. helloname01 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:55 AM

Should be smooth sailing for the Wild. The avs have nothing without Forsberg flopping around on the ice drawing penalties.

  16. bacon78 - Apr 25, 2014 at 12:59 AM

Minnesota Wild fans can get at me when you guys win the Stanley Cup how many do the Avalanche have

    • helloname01 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:04 AM

The Nordiques were good. The Avs suck

      • mp1131211 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:09 AM

        ?

      • mp1131211 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:19 AM

You know the nordiques never won a cup and the Avs won it the the first year they moved. Right? ???

      • mp1131211 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:22 AM

Can you guess who the goalie was that year? Are you aware of who the president of hockey operations is this year for the Avs? Ever heard of Foote? Sorry, I’m a wild fan, but this comment is sadly misinformed. Duchene, McKinnon, Oreilly, and now varlamov are some of the best. They are right up there with the greatest of the greats. McKinnon will own the entire league if he keeps this up. The Nordiques were nothing compared to the Avalanche franchise.

      • helloname01 - Apr 25, 2014 at 2:07 AM

Correct – neither amounted to anything. Whomever gets your avs club when they move due to lack of interest will love the mackinnon/varlymov gift that they receive

      • mp1131211 - Apr 25, 2014 at 2:10 AM

        My Avs? Ok, stop talking.

      • ffrey3660 - Apr 25, 2014 at 6:33 PM

The North Stars where great the Stars suck! Same thing!!!!!

    • credible316 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:07 AM

Uh oh, he’s up against the ropes! He’s digging into the nostalgia bag!

Your insults are as empty as Colorado’s box score the last 2 games!

      GO WILD!!!!!

      • mp1131211 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:11 AM

        Lol

    • rgledz - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:40 AM

I think we all understand that the Nordiques didn’t win a cup…..in Quebec. Since they were just imported to Colorado that first year, I give that one to the city of Quebec. Nobody in Colorado even had a clue about hockey that first year……some still don’t.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 25, 2014 at 2:12 AM

Dumb. They own because of a certain goaltender. It wasn’t the same team. A goal tender will make or break you.

    • lordfletcher - Apr 25, 2014 at 8:39 AM

Love when fans live in the past and also pretend that they had something to do with their favorite team winning the cup.

      entitled or moronic?

  17. bacon78 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:08 AM

the Minnesota Wild plain and simple are only winning they are dirty hockey team

    • helloname01 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:11 AM

Hey Dater, you are too drunk to comment on these stories. Give yourself a few hours in the sack to recharge

    • mp1131211 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:13 AM

Granland got so many cheap dirty shots this game it isn’t funny. Sorry you’re butt hurt about what happened with Cooke. But you’ll have plenty of time to get over it after game 6 when the Wild send the Avs on summer break!

  18. blkeskimo1785 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:12 AM

*sigh*…I guess I’ll be the only diplomatic Avs fan from here on out. I only got a chance to see the first period, but I was surprised that it was ONLY 1-0 Wild. They look like the more hungry team, and their fans definitely give them a boost. Congrats on evening the series at 2. Let’s see what happens in a best of 3!

    • strictlythedanks - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:16 AM

respect, and good luck ( not really) to the avs.. Appreiciate your honesty and enjoy the legal weed that the smart peoplebrought to colorado.

      • blkeskimo1785 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:23 AM

And likewise, but not really…at all. The Avs will be a good team, but they still need to work on their defensive game. I felt throughout the season that they overachieved, not that it’s blatantly obvious or anything…see you guys on Saturday!

      • lbeezyse - Apr 25, 2014 at 10:03 AM

The Avs will be a very good team eventually. The talent is there, but they are lopsided like the Oilers are, but with a way better goalie. If Johnson is your best defenseman you are already behind the 8-ball. A Weber/Suter/Doughty like defenseman would do wonders for the Lanche. Unfortunately those types of d-men don’t grow on trees. Also when they get some depth that can score they will be even more dangerous. Until then suck it! Go Wild.

    • credible316 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:17 AM

Welcome TRUE hockey lover. Looks like we’ve got ourselves a series!

  19. strictlythedanks - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:15 AM

Go Wild, this series should be at least 3-1 good guys, but we’ll have to keep the domintation up in the mile high city.

  20. edinatherealhockeytownusa - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:31 AM

The kids look great, I’d say the progression is ahead of schedule. Granlund is a STUD, Coyle is a man-child with the puck on the boards. I agree with LordFletcher Wild in 6. Av’s can’t get any sustained pressure and their PP has been non-existent the last two games. Has anyone seen Avscup? #freemattcooke

    • jpnfloyd - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:11 PM

Yes I did see, funny thing, she’s my wife’s friend and every time she goes to a game she gets comments on blogs here and there. Haula, Haula, Haula…..

  23. wildfan247 - Apr 25, 2014 at 1:41 AM

You betcha, saw her. Mn NICE at its best!
Back to the game, if and when the Avs get some D to help Var-la-la they are gonna be tough. But for now, GO WILD! The State of Hockey did their job.

  24. joey4id - Apr 25, 2014 at 8:50 AM

To be honest I’ve only watched 2 of the Wild’s games over the course of their 82 game schedule. I have seen their 4 playoff games, and I’ve seen 2 different teams. In the last 2 games they limited the Avs to 32 shots in 6 regulation periods, and Varlamov had to make some incredible saves to keep the game close. Financially speaking this was a huge win for the Wild which will assure them of another gate receipts. Same for Dallas and CBJ. Owners are salivating no doubt.

  25. luvmnsports2012 - Apr 25, 2014 at 11:11 AM

Hell yea boys!! Keep playing like this and good things will happen! Strong goaltending from Keumper..(besides the softy he let by) shoulda never went in. On to game 5 in the mile high city and back home for what we ALL Wild fans hope for is a series win at home!! Cheers WILD, great games at home let’s continue this in Colorado!! GO WILD!!!

    • drhockeysm7 - Apr 25, 2014 at 4:14 PM

luvmnsports, watch the replay of that goal… it was a really nice tip by Ryan Suter. Not a soft goal at all.

Either way, I’m on your side! Love the direction of this team, we need this SO bad and I really like our chances after these two home games, jump on them in Denver and and then wrap this up at home!

      GO WILD!!!
