Report: Cooke won’t appeal seven-game suspension

Apr 25, 2014, 9:29 PM EST

Cooke

Matt Cooke has decided not to appeal his seven-game suspension for his knee-on-knee hit to Colorado defenseman Tyson Barrie, according to Sportsnets’ Nick Kypreos.

That comes after Cooke said that he was sorry that Barrie, 22, will miss four-to-six weeks due to a MCL injury.

“It was not my intent to collide with him knee-on-knee,” Cooke insisted. “It was my intent to finish my check.”

At the same time, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety argued that Cooke further extended his knee “to ensure contact” when Barrie made an attempt to avoid the collision.

The NHL also noted that his suspension history was factored into his punishment even though Cooke is technically not a repeat offender by the standards of the new CBA.

Had Cooke decided to appeal his suspension, he still wouldn’t have been allowed to play during the process.
