Video: Ott slams Keith with heavy hit along the boards

Apr 22, 2014, 1:13 AM EDT

The heavy hitting between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues continues.

In the third period of Monday’s Game 3, Blues’ forward Steve Ott drilled Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith hard into the side boards. There was no call on the play.

Earlier in the game, Blues’ forward Maxim Lapierre was called for boarding when he slammed Blackhawks’ blue liner Sheldon Brookbank from behind into the end boards. This physical element in this series between two Central Division rivals wasn’t just restricted to the third game.

The Blackhawks were without defenseman Brent Seabrook, who was serving the first game of a three-game suspension for his high and late hit on Blues’ center David Backes in Game 2.

Keith is at the center of controversy for allegedly taunting Backes when he was struggling to his feet after the Seabrook hit.

I… I… got nothing left. Already tired of this back and forth and it’s only Game 3.

Someone quick say something stupid so I can care again.

    • jhaegs - Apr 22, 2014 at 2:33 AM

Lapierre’s hit was clean. Crawford got lucky tonight.

      • comeonnowguys - Apr 22, 2014 at 7:28 AM

Nope. Just so overjoyed to see you the day after that I can’t fall for that.

      • slysipops - Apr 22, 2014 at 5:04 PM

you blues fans are so pathetic!

      • jhaegs - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:10 AM

It was a joke… obviously (or I thought)

      • comeonnowguys - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:51 PM

It was obvious. Blues fans lack subtlety.

    • slysipops - Apr 22, 2014 at 5:02 PM

after whining for BACKASS’S sake i suppose you think this was an okay hit ? from behind …right on the numbers ? of course it was that scoring machine OTT that did the hit …so it had to be legal

  2. blackhawks2010 - Apr 22, 2014 at 1:26 AM

Wait, a Blues player making a dirty boarding hit? Can’t Be! Never!

    • titansbro - Apr 22, 2014 at 8:34 AM

The dirtiness in this series has gone both ways, it may even be more on Chicago’s side. Which is surprising because they weren’t like this at all in last year’s cup run. I mean, even Bruins fans came out of last year with a ton of respect for the B’hawks for how good they were & for how clean they played. I’ve watched this series & been surprised to see how chippy they’ve been. When an opposing player taunts a guy who is barely conscious then I’m ok with someone taking his number & putting him on his arse.

      • comeonnowguys - Apr 22, 2014 at 1:08 PM

Those two hits at the end of 2 are going to be hard for the Blues to top. Hopefully.

There’s a longstanding history of this kind of thing being reversed–Blues taking liberties and Blackhawks trying to play above it–which is why it seems so weird. Not justified, mind you. Just bizarro.

      • slysipops - Apr 22, 2014 at 5:08 PM

maybe the HAWKS just got sick of all the crap the blue neanderthals get away with ? the BLUES roster would be complete with RAFFI TORRES and MATT COOK added to it

  3. sabatimus - Apr 22, 2014 at 1:30 AM

There’s Brave Steve! There he is! Brave Steve!

    • mp1131211 - Apr 22, 2014 at 5:08 AM

Please don’t ever imitate him. Worst announcer in the entire league. I roll my eyes just reading that

  4. pavelfitzgerald - Apr 22, 2014 at 1:48 AM

    Charging much?

    • flyerspsu - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:00 AM

Furthest thing from charging, just a matter of whether its boarding which is debatable

      • bluelinemh - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:52 AM

        flyerspsu,

please explain to me how that is the “furthest thing from charging” cause the video clearly shows ott starting to skate right from the top of the crease when he is going for this hit and (call me crazy) that was a big thing the league looked at with seabrook’s hit on backes.

and yes i know they were two different hits

      • flyerspsu - Apr 22, 2014 at 12:03 PM

yeah i take back what I said, it certainly isnt the “furthest thing from charging”, i didnt watch this video and saw the slow mo replay of it on youtube where I saw Ott coast in for the last 5 feet before delivering the hit, id still say its probably not charging but I can understand where you would think that

as for the seabrook hit, there really is no comparison

      • imleftcoast - Apr 22, 2014 at 1:13 PM

It’s not the ‘furthest thing’, but agree it’s not charging. It would be kind of a weak boarding call. Keith just has to make that play quicker. Ott chose the right moment to take a shot at Keith. Good hockey play imho.

      • slysipops - Apr 22, 2014 at 5:16 PM

bluelinemh……YOUR CRAZY ! charging could be called from a 10 to 15 foot distance…. this more of a hit from behind ( on the numbers ) put away your violin too ! maybe you also got confused because it was that scoring machine OTT that got away with it ?

  5. muckleflugga - Apr 22, 2014 at 2:21 AM

    comeonnowguys

If you ever get that little pang in your soul to become an FBI profiler, ignore it. You would be terrible at it.

P.S. I am not on your lawn, but I promise you that if I was, I would not get off it.

    • titansbro - Apr 22, 2014 at 8:36 AM

      “generation x-box twitter twats”

thumbs up for that alone…. lol

      • jetsnhawks - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:02 AM

        Muckleflugga: definition; verb
1- to post mindless trolling garbage on the internet while sitting in mom’s basement.
2- to be of particularly low IQ, while simultaneously having a particularly high level of douche.

Wow, seems like you really nailed it by picking your name!

      • slysipops - Apr 22, 2014 at 5:21 PM

jetsnhawks… you forgot the part about him sitting in momies basement with his crayons and coloring books making her pictures for the fridge door !

    • avscup - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:47 AM

      Gold medal comment muckle! Brilliant!

Went over most of their heads as they were too busy trying to figure out how to make Keith say wakey wakey on NHL 2014.

  6. jhaegs - Apr 22, 2014 at 2:34 AM

I saw the hit from multiple angles. He hit him in the side- not from behind. Lappy’s was Busch league though.

    • tridecagon - Apr 22, 2014 at 3:03 AM

Yeah, sorry guys. This hit isn’t even remotely bad. The Lapierre one… I was not happy when we acquired him exactly because of that kind of crap. I don’t want to see it, from my team or anyone else’s.

  7. kingsfan93 - Apr 22, 2014 at 4:15 AM

Good for the Blues to take it to D. Keith. But did S. Ott make sure he was or at-least said “wakey, wakey” to D. Keith?

  8. thomasvanek - Apr 22, 2014 at 7:10 AM

If you are going to chirp a teams captain after he gets injured down on the ice, you deserve to be hit like that for being a classless scumbag.

    • alexbaymac - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:09 AM

Yet Backes rubbing his gloves in Toews bloodied face after yet another uncalled penalty *isn’t* classless? Off the ice, I really like Backes & what he does; on the ice…let’s just say that I was sorry to see the Blackhawks stooping down to the Blues playbook in Game 2. Very sorry.

      • alexbaymac - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:09 AM

        *glove*

  9. dontbsuchapuss - Apr 22, 2014 at 7:28 AM

Really and this is news they must be having a hard time finding any real stories. Ott isn’t even noticeable in the playoffs. So who cares he is a douche anyway.

  10. feedmetherock - Apr 22, 2014 at 8:12 AM

I mean.. Everybody knew it was coming.. Keith was going to have something coming his way this game for the “wakey wakey” comment. Not really news worthy though. Big hit, from the side, Keith just got the pass off.. Looks like a pretty legit playoff hockey hit.

    • hockey412 - Apr 22, 2014 at 8:36 AM

Yeah, I agree – I’d much rather see them do this than the Shawn Thornton chest bump and grunt.

  11. McFaddensPulledHammy - Apr 22, 2014 at 8:49 AM

Ott’s hit was clean, and of course Lapierre’s wasn’t. yes. What’s that saying… You can take someone out of Vancouver but you can’t take the Canuck out of them.

    • elvispocomo - Apr 22, 2014 at 2:38 PM

Nice… Of course he was a Duck and Hab before that, yet the Canucks are the team you slag.

  12. cubsfan101 - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:03 AM

    Wakey wakey Duncan!

    • stixzidinia - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:18 AM

I was gonna say the same thing. LOL. He had that coming. I don’t care if it’s dirty or not.

  13. jeffchadwick - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:11 AM

Clean or not, Keith has whatever he gets coming.

  14. dt58 - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:27 AM

Just wondering why Lapi didn’t go say “wakey wakey” to Brookbank?

    • slysipops - Apr 22, 2014 at 5:29 PM

wonder why lapi ( as you soooo affectionately called him ) turned down BROOKBANKS invite to tussle ?? the replay clearly showed BROOKBANK telling scumbag …here i am !

  15. chrisk61 - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:41 AM

a classic nasty playoff series between the teams with the 2 best logos in the league !

  16. chrisk61 - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:42 AM

ok toronto may have a better logo. but not montreal…they of the toilet seat.

  17. nj666 - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:58 AM

I’m more offended that a 9 second video required a 15 second commercial.

    • patthehockeyfan - Apr 22, 2014 at 12:10 PM

Hah! I had to sit through a 30-second commercial to see 9 seconds! Blink, and you miss it. Thanks, PHT.

  18. interiorfan - Apr 22, 2014 at 2:48 PM

@elvispocomo, couldn’t have said it better myself……sick of other teams fans slagging the Canucks. Their players are no worse than other teams players…..Duncan Keith being a perfect point in case.

  19. slysipops - Apr 22, 2014 at 5:53 PM

one observence i’ve made about the BLUES fans commenting here . by the times shown on the post either the commentors are too young or too mentally challenged to actually work for a living . or maybe the mental hospitals have included internet service for patients. one last explanation is that MOM is still carrying the mail ( so to speak ) while her baby finds himself living in the basement rent free with free food and entertainment ( tv and internet ) ! GOD bless all the MOMS !!

  20. bluebru14 - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:39 PM

Boy, you sure like to hear yourself talk. Do you practice by saying it out loud in front of the mirror before typing?

    • slysipops - Apr 23, 2014 at 5:07 PM

NOT REALLY …but if you can’t enjoy yourself , how could you expect others to do so ?
