Video: Marchand shakes off potential leg injury

Apr 22, 2014, 9:03 PM EDT

Boston Bruins pest Brad Marchand tends to get under peoples’ skin, even when he’s the one seemingly getting hurt.

Marchand seemed shaken up when he was tripped/hit by Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith:

That drew a two-minute tripping penalty and some derision when Marchand came back (and promptly took a penalty of his own) later in the second period. Here’s a taste of the debates regarding Marchand:

Either way, Marchand, 25, at least seems OK at the moment. Healthy enough to continue to attract detractors, even.

Where are the calls for Smith’s head?

    • strictlythedanks - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:20 PM

yup looked as bad or worse than cooke’s “mailicous” hit

      • imleftcoast - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:49 PM

Smith took out the left leg, and Marchand was favoring the right leg. Either you two are idiots or you’re joking.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:51 PM

And if we’re joking then you’re the idiot

      • imleftcoast - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:05 PM

If you and Marchand are joking, you’re not idiots. That’s the most you could say. I’m just pointing out what’s obvious on the video.

A total dive if anything it was a shin shot

      • krispyone - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:22 PM

watch the replay, when he landed his right knee twisted and hit the ice first, thats why he was favoring the right

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:33 PM

        That was his nose

  2. bigbadbruins77 - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:11 PM

    Phew!!

  3. sclairebear - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:15 PM

Did he mouth “I’m trying to draw a 5 as he was leaving?” That’s vintage Marchand!

    • bildomac07 - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:19 PM

Haha it’s vintage 90% of the NHL now. Guys do it in college, guys do it in the NHL, when there is a questionable hit like that nowadays there is a certain reflex to “sell it”. Tony Amonte said in the postgame that it’s part of the game and defined it as “gamesmanship” to try and get a 5 minute PP and have the other team lose one of their best players. It may not be particularly admirable or honest, but it is now something you see more and more of. Amonte also said that the refs are well aware of certain habitual offenders (aka Marchand, etc.) and that is why he felt a major wasn’t called.

Smith just didnt move. No intent. Marchand played a low game on sunday, deserves whatever comes his way. Little street rat.

  5. amityvillefun - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:21 PM

    LET’S GO BRUINS!!!!!

  6. sixchr - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:22 PM

Let me start by saying I’m a Bruins fan, just to clear that up. Marchand took a total dive on this play and it pisses me off. The Bruins don’t have to play that way and I don’t want them to. Hopefully Claude slaps him across the face in the intermission and tells him to knock it off. I don’t wanna see that crap.

    • bbgraf08 - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:33 PM

Not so sure about that. I don’t think Smith hit him intentionally, but that definitely hurt.

  7. muckleflugga - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:23 PM

somebody find pierre a rag to cry into and to clean his glasses

smith had position and did not stick his leg out … this while marchand skated into smith’s leg, catching the kind of air one would expect from a chinese acrobat with his dramatic follow-through

not unusual with bruins who hide behind a veneer of bluff, bluster and glove-shaking only to dive at every opportunity … sneaky cheats

    pukes

    french canadian hockey incarnate

You should probably stop watching hockey, it seems to make you miserable.

  8. jpat2424 - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:31 PM

    Bad call

  9. slaugin - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:32 PM

Def wasn’t a dive, now what he did after the hit was an act job trying to get 5

  10. sjsharks66 - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:38 PM

He was hit on his left leg and skates off acting as if he can’t put pressure on his right.

    • sixchr - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:43 PM

If you watch the replay in slow motion it doesn’t look like there was even contact on the left knee but it looked like his right knee bent awkwardly and he tried to sell it.

      • cheetah440 - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:21 PM

or rather than sell it, it actually hurt. Ever think of that?

Some of you people. Ever skate before? Ever fall on the ice?

      • stixzidinia - Apr 23, 2014 at 10:04 AM

There was no bend, his right skate landed completely square. He should stay off Twitter. He’ll lose that war. There are no penalties to be drawn on Twitter.

      • bildomac07 - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:24 PM

He got hit/tripped up. Tried to sell for 5. Mistakenly favored the wrong leg. Wisely covered his tracks postgame saying he didn’t feel it was a bad hit and that he just landed funny on his right leg hence why he favored that one. Case closed.

    • 6superbowls - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:30 PM

He’s a fraud and they buy it every time.

      • drewzducks - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:53 PM

Says a fan of the most fraudulent team in the league.

      • bildomac07 - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:21 PM

But they didn’t buy it here…

  11. tfilarski - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:43 PM

really trying to get that 5m

  12. thesportsjudge - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:45 PM

I’m sure he felt it, but he appeared to over sell it.

  13. brklynblueshirt - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:04 PM

Misspelled tatoo; can’t tell left from right; sounds about right.

    • lordstanley65 - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:11 PM

      So did you…it’s “tattoo”.

  14. brklynblueshirt - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:12 PM

Tattoo. Apparently I am in need of Hooked on Phonics as well.

  15. mclovinhockey - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:20 PM

    Wrong leg Marchand

  16. micasa81 - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:36 PM

Iggy starts helping him off, then is like, “ah, screw it.”

  17. nunan - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:51 PM

Well now all you haters who decided he was faking before you even saw the replay can rest easy. Already been reported it was his right knee hitting the ice that shook him up, not the hit, hence him favoring that leg. But whether you like it or not, and whether there is an injury or not, that’s a penalty. Get over it. Some of you are so ridiculous. Zero ability to look at penalties objectively.

  18. drewsylvania - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:09 PM

I love how jealous Bruins haters have to make up reasons to hate the team now. Hate on Lucic for his stick to the jewels if you want, at least that’d be accurate.

  19. paperkid96 - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:29 PM

Smith was just trying to make a good hard playoff hockey play on Marchands nuts and missed. That’s all.
