Torres says people are treating Cooke like a ‘serial killer’

If you planned to put together a list of the NHL’s most controversial active hitters, Raffi Torres and Matt Cooke may very well jostle for the top spot. Perhaps it makes sense that Torres feels for his fellow polarizing winger, then.

The San Jose Sharks forward had an interesting analogy for how people view Cooke, as CSNBayArea.com reports.

“I think he’s done a heck of a job the last couple of seasons to re-establish his game,” Torres said. “But with the media getting involved and especially social media, they make him out to be a serial killer. It’s kind of painful when you have to read that kind of stuff. I’m sure his family and close friends have to read that kind of stuff.”

It’s interesting that Torres, 32, would make such a comparison in defending someone else. After all, when he was a member of the Phoenix Coyotes, his former GM Don Maloney reacted to the outrage of Torres’ hit on Marian Hossa by saying, “You would think Raffi murdered a bus load of children the way he’s portrayed here in Chicago.” (Naturally, he would come to regret that statement.)

So, basically, one over-the-top assessment for another?

Regardless, Torres seems to empathize with Cooke’s feeling of throwing a lot of hard work away with that knee-on-knee hit with Colorado Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie.

“I’m sure he felt brutal in that moment [Monday] night, thinking, ‘What did I just do? All that work goes down the drain,'” Torres said. “He’ll take what he gets and I’m sure he’ll be back being an effective player for them in the future.”

Here’s video of the Minnesota Wild winger’s hit on Barrie, which will reportedly sideline the Avs blueliner for four-to-six weeks:

    The douche bag brotherhood.

    • apkyletexas - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:42 AM

So glad Cooke is gone from Pittsburgh. His cheap shots never did the team any favors – usually just fired up the opponents.

      • cookj273 - Apr 26, 2014 at 1:26 AM

I dunno, after he had cleaned up his play he turned out to be a gr8 player and he was so awesome on the PK. I def miss him on the third line but yeah the drama he brings was a pain. He will never escape his past its like bein on the sex offender’s list, they warn everyone in the neighborhood when you move in lol. He must be really disappointed in himself for this though after working hard to remove the cheap shots : (.

Ah! Hyperbole! Where would we be without it?

I see what you did there. :-)

    • blomfeld - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:51 PM

JUST ‘ZIP IT’ YOU FISH-FACED LOSER !!!

The bottom line is that Torres is an ugly, dirty ‘fish-faced’ puke who the losers from Silicon Valley are so proud to call one of their own ! … truly ‘pathetic’ when you think about it eh ? Regardless, I just got ‘off the phone’ with the man upstairs and he confirmed that tonight the Sharks are going to regret ‘anything’ and/or ‘everything’ that they’ve said or done to date in this series ! … you just gotta love it man ! :)

GOOD TIMES !!! … CRUSH THE SHARKS !!! … GO KINGS FOREVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Blomfeld’s prediction: Kings 8 – Fish Farts 1

  3. vstar1us - Apr 22, 2014 at 6:34 PM

Good article, it is good to hear players stand up for Cooke!

  4. drewsylvania - Apr 22, 2014 at 6:35 PM

Can we ban anyone who is serially disingenuous? Thanks.

  5. drewsylvania - Apr 22, 2014 at 6:38 PM

Torres would make a great lobbyist or advocate for prison populations.

  6. joey4id - Apr 22, 2014 at 6:48 PM

Cooke is certainly a hockey serial criminal. One that is “repeatedly committing the same offense and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern.”

    • sw19womble - Apr 22, 2014 at 7:45 PM

Now wait a minute, it’s not like Cooke has ever accidentally targeted someone’s knee before, is it?

      Oh, wait….

      Shut up, blomfeld. Idiot.

  7. bruinpred - Apr 22, 2014 at 6:54 PM

Exactly how these guys think – Torres focused on what Cooke did to himself, not what he did to the other player. Selfish – his friends and family should have to read the truth.

    • spoon9z - Apr 24, 2014 at 12:04 AM

      EXACTLY!!!

Poor Matt Cooke and his 7 games of suspension and f the kid who was in his first playoffs who will now rehab for a few months once he can even put weight on his knee again.

Torres should STFU! What next, Bertuzzi will make a statement on how these poor players aren’t given a true shot to prove they aren’t animals? Get them out of the game. You CAN play a hitting role and not take out knees, crush people in the head via blindside checks and most certainly not do it over and over and over again. Just another “accident” by the “cookie”. POS.

  8. tuberippin - Apr 22, 2014 at 6:56 PM

Torres is a garbage player, and Cooke is worse than Torres.

  9. roryflyers - Apr 22, 2014 at 6:57 PM

    Poor Matt Cooke.

  10. sabatimus - Apr 22, 2014 at 7:00 PM

    Hey Raffi: Where’s the problem?

  11. canucks18 - Apr 22, 2014 at 7:19 PM

You people are incredible. You sit on your computers talking &$@! at all of these guys and think you are tough because you do. You throw out these ridiculous insults and cast all these brash judgements on these people (yea they are actually people) and just continue to try and 1-up the other guy. Get a life, get a clue, and stop being so incredibly delusional with your nonsense comments.

    • purpleguy - Apr 22, 2014 at 7:27 PM

The internet is full of anonymous tough guys — change the comments section to FB format like the 4-letter network did, and they all disappear.

      • JoeAvg - Apr 22, 2014 at 7:56 PM

The funniest thing is these people think it’s anonymous, but it’s not. If somebody wants to find out who you are, it’s pretty easy.

    • spoon9z - Apr 24, 2014 at 12:06 AM

      tough guys?!

we are discussing the pos “tough guys” of this league who won’t go toe to toe with almost anyone, and when they do they get lit up like Cooke with Kane. yet making a comment is now being a tough guy…ok canuck. go enjoy your Torts hockey and no Cups you f’n fool.

  12. muckleflugga - Apr 22, 2014 at 7:59 PM

serial killers … great analogy from a notorious and habitual predator like torres

i’m old enough to have followed the tate labianca murders in graphic detail … myself and the rest of the world in the day

i remember charlie manson’s family rallying to his banner after he was cornered in a cupboard in death valley, then jailed … all were lead on the outside by lynette fromme, declaring manson’s innocence, then rationalizing his behaviour as some perverse manifestation of a second coming …

squeaky as she was known, made a later try on gerald ford’s life but her .45 did not have a chambered round, a tiny delay that permitted restraint before damage could be done –more testimony as to the quality of protection afforded presidents … it’s not like fromme hadn’t been in the news every day for nearly two years

soooooo, it’s not surprising to hear torres rationalize cooke’s lapse in context of a serial killer, himself an habitual offender … birds of a feather … he’s bad but not that bad

like cooke, i’m not convinced torres is wholly redeemed … taking cooke’s part betrays a sense of victimhood for cooke, likely founded in belief of his own victimhood … given his stand on cooke, one might expect torres to cross the line again

sooner than later if the current series with los angeles heats-up in coming games

    • blomfeld - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:38 PM

terrific comment Flugga … all of those Manson pigs should have been lined up and shot without further ado, including their defense lawyers … anyway, you just watch what happens now tonight to this ‘fish-faced’ puke ! :)

    • blackhawksdynasty - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:37 PM

One of the things I regret (selfishly I might add) is the manson family ruined (for me) what was a great song in “helter skelter”

  13. hardkor07mn - Apr 22, 2014 at 8:49 PM

Well said Canuck! I would bet my yearly salary that 90% of these trolls have never laced up the skates a day in their life. I am in no way defending what Cooke did or didn’t do, but I think the media has blown this way out of proportion. It’s unfortunate that Berrie got hurt, but this crap happens every game. The only reason we are talking about this today is because Berrie got hurt. Cooke will sit his game or two and be right back out there.

    • slickvb82 - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:30 AM

I say that all the time, most of these people who comment probably never played hockey. Its pretty easy to tell who they are too.

    • spoon9z - Apr 24, 2014 at 12:09 AM

fitting the ONLY people defending Cooke are minny fans, and it’s a HUGE letdown as I used to have a healthy respect for the team and the area’s ties to hockey. now, not so much…even with Harding being such an inspiration too

  14. sjsharks66 - Apr 22, 2014 at 8:55 PM

I agree that Cooke just ruined all the good he did the past 3 years. You can’t really feel bad this time. I am disappointed in Cooke, I do not feel bad for him. This is not a questionable hit. Barrie will not say it was clean either. Like Stoll did to Torres last year. This is not just a good hit that possibly went wrong. He knew what he was doing. He needs to sit for a good amount of time.

  15. beepbeepbeeplgb - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:05 PM

funny everyone is freaking out about the cook hit but no one mentions bickels hit on sobotka, which was was the same exact thing.

    • blackhawksdynasty - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:57 PM

Please see my reply below to *nolockout

Warning: blue tinted goggles will impair judgment, please remove.

  16. nolockoutpricks - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:14 PM

whats funny is this hit is way worse actually targeting the knee no call no hearing.

this leagues player saftey is a bunch of BS

    • blackhawksdynasty - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:49 PM

Obviously you’ve never laced ‘em up…. Look at the still image of the video you posted. Now look at bickell’s body positioning. Left arm tucked. Body weight shifting to his left (into the intended body check). There was no attempt to injure or even contact the knee. Sometimes at game speed we can’t finish the hit as intended, and accidents happen. 2 minutes for kneeing. Correct call.

Now watch the last video posted above by sw19.

There’s no way one can compare an unfortunate hockey play (bickell’s) to the type of history shown in the cooke video (obvious, deliberate intent to injure – over and over and over and over…….)

Bringing up the bickell play in the context of this article makes you come off like a whining homer.

Don’t lower yourself to that level, man.

      • slickvb82 - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:34 AM

Wow. By your comment “obviously you’ve never laced ‘em up” I would assume you have. But honestly with that complete non-sense you wrote I’m not sure.

I 100% agree with him, this Bickel knee on knee is way worse than Cookes. And his reasoning if you didn’t read it, was that the NHL player safety committee is bogus when looking at the two.

  17. cybernetikghost - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:39 PM

..but, but Torres is such a good guy now guys! Ask any Sharks fan, they’ll tell you..

    • skr213 - Apr 23, 2014 at 6:12 PM

Yes, we will. His behavior on the ice has changed, and his PIMs show the proof. I think he should shut the hell up on this topic, but that doesn’t change the fact that his style of play has evolved. That said, if he threw a knee like this, I’d be the first to say ban him for life. He got all the second chances anyone could ask for. And that’s my thought on Cooke as well.

      • spoon9z - Apr 24, 2014 at 12:13 AM

        well said

these guys have gotten sooo many chances, but none more than cooke. he should be gone

  18. amityvillefun - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:03 PM

Cooke is a lousy player and seems to just enjoy hurting players far more talented than he will ever be. He needs to be booted out of the league. Like, 10 years ago.

  19. mcstank - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:06 PM

You know maybe a little retaliation. I seem to remember game one or 2 when talbot was punching parise in the back of the head. Now that was blatant. Weve all seen what happened with bertuzzi and punches to the back of the head. Colorado played a dirty game and I didnt see anything any comments on that. Minnesota had to turn it up a little. For anyone whos watched the play you can see he was going to go to the body just skated in at a bad angle and led with his leg. Welcome to hockey.. unfortunate play book closed.

    • blackhawksdynasty - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:54 PM

Holy homer. If cooke played for any of the other 29 teams and this happened to a wild player you’d be calling for his execution.

      Next idiot in line please….

      • lordfletcher - Apr 23, 2014 at 8:14 AM

Figured you’d be too busy “lacing them up” to comment further on others. Just stop. No one cares and it doesn’t matter if you have never played or are a former pro, rules aren’t THAT hard to comprehended. Start name dropping your hockey credentials if you want to keep talking about your history with the game. Otherwise, you’re a typical internet fat a$$

Cute that you’re a Hawk fan defending your teams player too… K homer.

        Stay classy Chicago.

  20. nicofthenorthstar - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:12 PM

Totally agree with Torres. Cooke has been a very solid and scrappy, but clean, player this year. I understand people’s grudge against the guy, but he has changed and is a valuable and intensely hard-working player.
That knee on knee was brutal; bummer for Barrie. However, given Cooke’s play over the past couple years I’m very skeptical that it was malicious/intent to injure.

    • blackhawksdynasty - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:55 PM

      ^^^see above reply to mcstank^^^

  21. mrhyperpants - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:15 AM

Cooke should be banned form hockey as long as Barrie is out. 4 – 6 weeks.

  22. vstar1us - Apr 23, 2014 at 8:31 AM

  23. zraskovich - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:55 PM

Roy has his team intentionally hitting Granlund high…a guy with documented concussions. Just curious, is it worse for the league to allow teams to target players with head injuries, or take responsibility for a player making a very bad hit that clearly wasn’t ordered by the coach?

  24. spoon9z - Apr 24, 2014 at 12:18 AM

    complete bs

they’re called BODY CHECKS…you knee hunting cooke defenders should look it up
