Marchand on skeptics: ‘That’s why they’re on Twitter and I’m in the NHL’

Apr 22, 2014, 11:06 PM EDT

Leave it to Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand to draw criticism even when he’s receiving the hits.

Also, leave it to him to land a great one-liner on his critics.

After hearing about the Internet skepticism about him seemingly favoring the wrong knee after getting hit by Detroit’s Brendan Smith, Marchand provided this gem to’s Joe Haggerty:

Here’s video of the hit:

And a good example of the skepticism his departure from the ice generated (especially since he returned soon after):

Never a dull moment with Marchand.

      BAHAHAHAHA try your coach.

    • matt14gg - Apr 23, 2014 at 11:50 AM

And every single one of you would take Marchand on your team in a second. Not sure how many of you remember Pat Verbeek, but Marchand is his clone (other than the fact that he’s a left shot). They even look alike. He was hated around the league, yet every fan and every team in every city would have taken him in a heartbeat. With Marchand you get the whole package: skill, swagger, and top-notch douchebaggery.

13-10 all time in the playoff games vs the Pens…
3-2 all time in playoff series vs the Pens.
Not sure what the regular season record is vs the Pens…but my guess is that the B’s lead that as well.

    • sabatimus - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:33 PM

You think Marchand was faking when Neal kneed him in the head while he was down?

      • stixzidinia - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:42 PM

Neal should’ve tried to decapitate him with his skate. The NHL would be a better place.

      • drewzducks - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:57 PM

But Neal is a Pen, I mean coward, well same thing.

      • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 8:28 AM

Faking what? The guy never missed a shift when Neal did that. I’m sure at some point during every series this year some fan of the opposing team will look back at that incident and think “you know…maybe that wasn’t so bad…it’s not like the guy was hurt and jesus this kid is a total ****”.

Marchand is scum, only scum would stick up for him.

      • ibieiniid - Apr 23, 2014 at 9:10 AM

hockey412….you just stuck up for James Neal. both sides of the argument can’t be scum, can they?

      • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 9:49 AM

They sure can, both be scum…and both are.

In defense of the comment, I wasn’t actually sticking up for Neal – I was saying that Marchand didn’t ‘fake’ anything there – he never missed a shift.

Of course, it’s virtually impossible to limp with your head.

      • JoeAvg - Apr 23, 2014 at 10:04 AM

      • dentals1 - Apr 23, 2014 at 8:32 AM

Like a Pens fan can say anything after the Crosby dive when the linesman was washing out the offside and grazed him with his arm. At least Marchand was hit by a player.

      • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 8:46 AM

Crosby got hit in the mouth unexpectedly by a piece of metal…you’re saying that he intentionally was trying to draw a penalty, from the ref, ON the ref, for it? This is the mentality you’re bringing to the table?

      • ibieiniid - Apr 23, 2014 at 9:11 AM

he’s saying that his first instinct upon being touched is to dive. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never been accidentally hit in the face that lightly and fell to a knee.

      • dentals1 - Apr 23, 2014 at 9:16 AM

I am saying he didn’t know it was the linesman and took a dive. Big piece of metal moving at high speed. Might as well have been a crow bar or a tire iron.

    • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 8:53 AM

Screw ’em all, buddy…it’s them…ALL OF THEM….not the B’s….just keep telling yourselves you’re right. Eventually your list will have 26 other teams on it.

      • pats2001 - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:04 PM

nope, terrier92 has it nailed. every other team in the league are respectable organizations and have respectable fans. montreal has been leading the charge for years dating back to when they were given the first pick in the draft every single year, hence all those cups back in the 60s and 70s. then pittsburgh came a knockin when mario started complaining about how he can’t get any people to come watch his beloved team so he had to start looking at moving to KC. but the league took pity on him and mario babied his way to crosby and malkin. must be nice to be able to cry your way to the top of the draft. i can understand where the pens fans get it from…so i’m sorry its not your fault you guys are pu$$y fans…its starts at the top with your owner

      • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:46 PM

I have no idea of your stature, and I won’t attempt a guess. But even without seeing you, I’d be willing to bet Mario could fold you in tenths like you were paper, rip you up, and blow your bits out the window.

Anyone can offer up an opinion on Mario’s tactics, just as anyone can poke fun at a bad situation. Here’s fact: Mario had to get the swine ex-Governer to move. Rendell’s sweaty, drunken, corrupt A$s was playing hardball WANTING the Pens to move, and Mario won the battle. Why, do you ask, was Rendell such a corrupt POS about it?

Look him up…you’ll see why. He was so bitter his Flyers lost in 2010 that he still, to this day, hasn’t paid his wager to Pat Quinn.

Never question super Mario. He will hunt you, and eat you. I think it’s so funny though how some Boston fans think that Boston has had it so rough, and every other team surely must have been corrupt.

      • c9castine - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:10 PM

pats your so far away from the truth on your post its ridiculous.

to expand on hockey412’s post, anybody wanna tell me where ed rendell went to college and what sports teams he roots for? give you one hint….they are losing their playoff series.

pittsburgh had a bad owner who got into a lot of debt, like Melnyk and Ottawa, and that was coupled with an old arena that was not pulling in the kind of revenue it should have, and then this led to the selling off of assets (Kovalev, Straka, Jagr, Lang, Borrasso…) and to a rebuild. Lemieux played hard ball in negotiations, made some threats and didnt budge a whole lot. He ended up winning, and later even came out and said “yeah i was never going anywhere, just being a boss”.

you can say we just flopped our way to first round picks (apparently chicago tried really hard just couldnt win and so they were rewarded) but there are several core pieces of this team that were drafted later or acquired some way. Fleury, Malkin, Crosby, and Staal were all top 2 picks but Max Talbot (drafted) scored the goals to beat detroit in game 7 five years ago. Youve still got to put a team together.

      • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:14 PM

      • thesheabutterfactory - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:17 AM

Nobody is saying that Brad Marchand is a bad player. He isn’t. He’s good and good in clutch situations. He’s just a bad person with no honour or class. Being a good hockey player doesn’t give you an excuse to be a piece of garbage….. Ulf Samuelsson was a pretty good player who won cups. I guess that excuses everything, right, drewzducks?

      • imleftcoast - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:59 PM

And there were no penalties for punching guys in the face. It was like Colon Campbell had told the officials to favor the Bruins. We’ll never see a 4-game suspension in the Finals again, and for a marginal late hit.

      • drewzducks - Apr 23, 2014 at 4:51 PM

Imburnttoast…rather than waiting for the refs to bail out poor little Danielle, how about manning up and smacking Marchand’s huge honker. Maybe that would have snapped them out of their historic, pathetic in-series collapse. Trying to blame the NHL for Vancouver pissing themselves after gaining a 2-0 series advantage? How about not getting outscored 21-4 over the last 5 games. You sound bitter over the Bruins basically destroying what could have or should been a successful run of hockey in Vancouver. The door has closed, the Sedin’s are in rapid decline and you went from having two good goalies, to none.

    • drewzducks - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:02 AM

I’ll agree that he is his own worst enemy at times. Maybe he has little guy syndrome, which in no way excuses his clown tendencies, but you have to credit, which is all I’m really doing, his incredible skill set.

      • stixzidinia - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:38 AM

Nor will anything be taken seriously by anybody defending Marchand, the most notorious diver/actor in the history of the NHL. Seriously, name a player you think is a diver and I can conjure at least five clips of Marchand for every one you for whatever player you mention. Care to take the Pepsi Challenge?

  8. muckleflugga - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:20 AM

without an instigator penalty, we’d see a different brad marchand … a lot less garbage and a lot more hockey

he’s a decent enough player, nifty, but is usually out of focus … afflicted as he is with the small man’s disease … i expect he was bullied as a child, though i wonder why with that yap

as for neal’s knee, the suspension was a travesty by every measure … the no harm no foul rule was forgotten in the hysteria of the moment

granted, marchand has the skull of an ox, but there was no more force or damaging intent from neal than a swat with sidney’s signature edition feather boa

nochanceoffleury wants to bed james neal [ after henrik lundqvist ] so he must have other virtues not apparent to other studs among

  10. mp1131211 - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:02 AM

Great one liner? No, Marchand is
In the NHL because of his relatively decent hockey skills not because he’s a rat and fakes injuries to draw 5 minutes. As soon as this weasel gets flattened by some goon he’s agitated, his career will be over and he’ll get a twitter account like a normal person.

  11. timmons94 - Apr 23, 2014 at 6:25 AM

Is anyone shocked ? Marchand is garbage. James Neal did what every opposing player in the NHL would do. He is a rat. Who cares. Bruins are the biggest bunch of cry babies. Led by their coach porky pig

    • drewzducks - Apr 23, 2014 at 4:46 PM

At least he hasn’t attempted to tackle anyone on the ice. Tomlin is an embarrassment, but fitting of Pittsburgh.

  12. cadlow - Apr 23, 2014 at 7:04 AM

Some “fans” really are morons. It wasn’t a “knee on knee” hit it was a trip. Marchand grabbed his right knee because that was the knee that twisted on the ice after he was “tripped”. Watch the video morons.

    • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 8:32 AM

So you’re saying Marchand is an honorless weasel of a player, playing on an honorless, dirty team, right?

  13. montrealbbr - Apr 23, 2014 at 8:42 AM

Cant we get Marchand and Torres or Cooke on the ice together?

  14. lilroot9 - Apr 23, 2014 at 9:08 AM

I dislike Marchand a lot and I do think he “fakes” injuries to get longer penaltys or suspensions, but this knee on knee hit is still not acceptable.

Marchard should get talked to too, don’t want to bring the game down with faking injuries, but it still must have hurt. However, him holding the wrong leg up is so humarious that he had no sense to what knee was hit.

Would like to see a game or two suspension (if not more) to Smith, who hit him. It’s only right considering fallout from the Cooke play only 1 day before. Wake these players up, this is not OK.

Go NHL, great playoffs so far! (just keep the cheap stuff out of the game)

    • lilroot9 - Apr 23, 2014 at 9:12 AM

OK, it was more of an “attempt” at knee on knee that actually happening, but Smith did turn his knee to hit his knee, I think it was obvious.

  16. pepper2011 - Apr 23, 2014 at 9:25 AM

The thing is you can see the his boot create some torque on his knee. I am quite sure he knew where he got kneed. As he was falling (which even the biggest marchand haters can’t say he dove; it was a clear trip) he leg swung when he landed.

Not much to it. He tweeked his knee/ankle; felt some pain and got a little scared his season was over.

I have to assume that some of the people on here have played a sport, and you had the split second where you were like “uh-oh”

since everyone is pointing out Marchands flaws; remember when he went in low on Salo? he hit him him somewhere between his knee and waist. Salo left with an upper body/head injury. Point of contact is not always where the injury is.

    • pepper2011 - Apr 23, 2014 at 9:28 AM

In fact you can see him test the ankle @ 1:02

  17. eagles92 - Apr 23, 2014 at 9:29 AM

Does Marchand dive? Of course he does and I love my bruins but lets be honest the guy dives. But any Pens fan complaining about him while praising Cindy Crybaby is just pathetic.

    • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 9:54 AM

      These words….they’re hurtful.

I know I, for one, am just having a blast poking the Bruins fans – they get so bent so quickly. These situations are always fun….if you read above you can see how much fun they had with the Crosby/ref whistle incident. We’ll never stop hearing about that one.

  18. matthews4 - Apr 23, 2014 at 10:32 AM

I want to hear nothing from Pens fans who swore up and down that Cooke had changed. How is that working out for you? Considering your owner is the biggest crybaby in sports when things don’t go his way. You have no room to say a word. The fact is i never get bent by Pens fans, I love how lost they are when they can’t figure out all the things they complain about is a mirror image of their organization Plus we swept your a$$..

    • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:59 PM

Are you sure? Because you sound kind of bent.

Are you seriously going to compare Mario to Jeremy Jacobs, for eff’s sake? While Mario and Sid were working like hell to get a new CBA last year, your crybaby owner was about to take his billions and just go home! He was leading the charge to keep the lock-out in effect all year, until every player cracked.

      You were saying? HMMMMMMM?????

      • ibieiniid - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:55 PM

I gotta say I’m with you on this one 412. For one offseason, I loved The Kid. he did great work to get him and the boys back on the ice…. and despised by me again. I’m grateful for him being in the league for that sole reason. No sarcasm.

  19. mjdkid100 - Apr 23, 2014 at 10:53 AM

Dont worry about these quotes…just use to the ones to get you page clicks…

“It was more my other leg. I twisted my knee up a little bit when I landed there,” admitted Marchand following the game. “[It was] a little scare there. My leg was kind of tingling.”

Marchand also bore the brunt of the twitter critics at large, who immediately thought he was faking an injury after grabbing at his right knee once Smith had made contact with his left leg. A close review of the video showed that Marchand definitely landed awkwardly on his right leg, but that didn’t stop the twitter community at large from piling that Marchand was embellishing for a penalty kill.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the people who cry the most about Marchand & the Bruins are also fans of teams that Boston eliminated from the playoffs in recent years.

    • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 12:56 PM

I don’t think too many are crying…they’re laughing.

      • gallyhatch - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:11 PM

        No. . . you’re crying.

You’ve been crying ever since the Penguins got their teeth kicked in last spring.

Here we are almost a calendar year later, and you are still crying.

      • hockey412 - Apr 23, 2014 at 1:17 PM

No, I’m pretty sure I’m laughing. The Bruins played a great, clean series last year – but that really was the only time I’ve seen them play clean. Hard group of guys to respect, hard to watch what Jacob’s billions entitles them to get away with on the ice. But none of that hatred applies to last year’s playoffs…they played great, and didn’t exhibit any of the characteristics that generally makes me want to vomit when I watch them.

God bless the playoffs. AND GOD BLESS YOU SIR.

Lay off bruins fans. Hard always being 2nd. Their hated rivals have them best by 18 cups. In baseball their hated rivals look down at laugh at their 18 title lead. And of course the Cheatriots are 3 behind the steelers. Wah wah wah. Boston strong. Lol. Boston weak more like it.

    • bsfan77 - Apr 23, 2014 at 5:05 PM

Here we go with the 6 titles comment and the steal curtain crap. Bruins finshed ahead of “yinz”. Dont get me started on the baseball team you think you have. Have they one a world series? Oh thats right, they cant get out of the first round of the playoffs. The Bruins dive. All teams do it. Some of the worst I have seen are Pittsburgh by far. And Crosby crying after every offside, penalty, and whistle is getting old. Love when he falls down and doesnt get up until he is seen by a ref. Love seeing the beating he is taking from Dubinsky. More teams should play him and Malkin the way Boston did last year. Enjoy the series you are playing in now because not many teams in the playoffs will allow you back into a game after you have slept the first 2 periods. If Cindy keeps gliding instead of back checking, kiss a deep run good bye. Love the fair weather Pitt fans bashing their beloved team the other night when they were down by 2. Now they are the best team again. Get some more bedazzled pink hats.

  25. bsfan77 - Apr 23, 2014 at 5:07 PM
