Video: Lucic spears DeKeyser from behind

Apr 18, 2014, 10:27 PM EST

The Boston Bruins wanted to play a physical game against Detroit, but this probably isn’t what they had in mind.

While 24-year-old rookie defenseman Danny DeKeyser was looking the other way, Boston’s Milan Lucic speared him at the end of the second period.

There was no penalty on the play, but Lucic might still get punished for this one. You can see the incident below:

This isn’t the first time Lucic has allegedly delivered this kind of hit. He was accused of doing something similar to Montreal’s Alexei Emelin last month:

It’s worth adding that Lucic, who was mad about a hip check Emelin delivered earlier, flatly denied the spearing.

“Just skating by him and that’s all,” Lucic said, per the Hockey News. “People are trying to say I speared him. I did not spear him, so that’s it.”

I’ve been a Lucic apologist in the past, but there’s no excuse for that. Cheap, gutless, dirty, whatever you wanna call it. Better be the max fine coming.

    • sabatimus - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:38 PM

Lucic is a talented player, but enough of this crap. He’s done this far too much. He did this years ago just after a faceoff to provoke Chris Neil into a fight (which it did). Here is definitely one of the times as a Bruins fan that I’m throwing him under the bus. Totally cheap, sucker play. Does he think this is fun or something?

      • c9castine - Apr 19, 2014 at 12:19 AM

no, he genuinely cant control himself. he has anger issues you can see it. after he almost scored on that deflection, and then datsyuk went down and embarrassed everybody who used to think they were a good hockey player, his eyeballs were popping out on the bench.

then of course at the end of the game he has to turn and start throwing cross checks into peoples faces. because cry baby lost.

    • kendog1 - Apr 18, 2014 at 11:23 PM

Cheap, gutless, dirty is right. If the league doesn’t suspend him, then that’s the image they are presenting to the national tv audience. He’s done it before with no punishment! Is this “a hockey play”? Is this how the league wants itself represented?

    • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Apr 19, 2014 at 5:19 AM

He is a punk he has gone from a hard nosed clean player to a punk

  2. graymalkin26 - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:34 PM

How is this clown not suspended, Shanahan is an idiot joke.

    • bcisleman - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:40 PM

Shanny can be faulted for not disciplining the first spear on Emelin but he’s no longer the NHL’s guy. Hopefully, the right thing is done…minimum 1 game.

  3. roryflyers - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:34 PM

    God I hate this loser.

  4. porkchopexpress1969 - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:35 PM

cheap POS Lucic. Should get suspended

  5. bcisleman - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:36 PM

    Milan Lucic is a cheap shot artist…and a liar…so that’s it.

    • sabatimus - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:38 PM

      Liar? How?

      • sabatimus - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:39 PM

Oop, never mind. I saw it. Kinda makes me want to throw my jersey in the trash.

      • sabatimus - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:41 PM

Probably the first time I’ve ever thumbed myself down.

  6. bubblehead22 - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:36 PM

Dirty team. Detroit is well coached and won’t participate.

    • sabatimus - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:40 PM

Are you implying Detroit doesn’t have dirty players?

      • beelza - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:50 PM

        A weak try.

      • sabatimus - Apr 18, 2014 at 11:10 PM

Who’s trying? It’s a simple question…and one that I have yet to get an answer to.

      • mrminkus - Apr 18, 2014 at 11:28 PM

Am I the only one who is tired of the ‘ya but they have dirty players too’ excuse. Point is, it doesn’t matter. This is about a classless dirty player – Lucic – pulling yet another dirty trick!

      • kendog1 - Apr 18, 2014 at 11:29 PM

If by dirty you mean intentionally hitting a player from behind in the balls with your stick behind the play, I can’t think of any Detroit players off hand that would stoop to that level.

      • c9castine - Apr 19, 2014 at 12:13 AM

they really dont. plays happen some times but there was nobody from the red wings remotely interested in playing Lucic and the Bruins’ games. and they wont. mike babcock will cut their ***** off.

      • esracerx46 - Apr 19, 2014 at 12:32 AM

They have Lucic’s role model growing up in Todd Bertuzzi. That’s about it though. Some guys think Kronwall is cheap, but he’s really not.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 19, 2014 at 3:42 AM

kendog1 “If by dirty you mean intentionally hitting a player from behind in the balls with your stick behind the play, I can’t think of any Detroit players off hand that would stoop to that level.”

You can’t? Really? Not one?? Not ANYONE???? Maybe you’ve just got into hockey recently or maybe you’ve been into hockey a long time and taken a lot of head shots.

How about attack a player from behind and nearly kill him? Would that count as dirty?

      • 101starmymedic - Apr 19, 2014 at 9:50 AM

Oh my God get off the Bertuzzi dirty bandwagon! When is the LAST time he did something? That was it. He has not done anything sense. Whereas Lucic, does this crap ALL THE TIME. One play by Bertuzzi, which was absolutely terrible, does not make the man human garbage for the rest of his life.

Lucic is dirty, continues to be dirty, and will continue to be. Todd Bertuzzi will not do anything remotely dirty while he plays for Babcock. That is not Babcock’s style and he abhors that type of play.
Babcock and the Wings is the best thing to happen to Bertuzzi. It’s time people stop saying that he’s this dirty horrible player when he hasn’t done anything SINCE that incident.

Bringing Bertuzzi into this conversation is nothing more than a deflection from a fan too naive to realize that Lucic is a dirty pile of crap.

        GET.
        OVER.
        IT.

        Leave Bertuzzi to his own.

    • esracerx46 - Apr 19, 2014 at 12:16 AM

Maybe Quenneville can see the future and was motioning to Dekeyser to take care of the jewels. First one I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. This….come on man! You crack a guy in the balls from behind with a weapon. Wtf. Perhaps Lucic is just jealous since after a move like that its pretty obvious he has no balls.

      • charlieconway96 - Apr 19, 2014 at 2:22 AM

Kendog, while I mostly agree with you, you must remember that Todd Bertuzzi plays for Detroit now.

  7. bspray - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:41 PM

Why is it no surprise to me that Lucic is going after another dude’s package… Repeat offender? Of course he is…

  8. cheesesteak75 - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:42 PM

    Classless move for sure!

  9. sanjosecupcrazy - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:42 PM

I just watched a 30-second soccer commercial so I could watch a 10-second hockey clip.

    Thanks, NBC. That makes sense.

      AdBlockPlus.com

It has a cool little stop sign on your browser toolbar that shows you how many ads it blocks on each site. Videos here play immediately with no ad to sit through.

        Does it work youtube too?

      • sanjosecupcrazy - Apr 19, 2014 at 1:45 AM

Tested it and it worked for me. When the ad is longer than the content, that’s obnoxious.

By the way, NBC: Why don’t you try targeting your ads as well? What’s next, ads for rhymic gynmastics and badminton? Save the sissy sports like soccer for the Euros. No one here cares about the English Premiere League.

  13. watermelon1 - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:46 PM

Stop it NOW. Don’t wait until the cheap shots force the opponent to retaliate and then suspend guys from both teams or even worse…. Just the other team.

Give Lucic 1 game suspension now and set the precedent that this won’t be tolerated.

The fact that it’s the playoffs shouldn’t matter. He’s taking horrible cheap shots and it’s premeditated too. Not even in the heat of battle. He actually looked around to make sure the officials weren’t looking before he took the shot.

    • blinkyhowe - Apr 18, 2014 at 11:31 PM

Yes…gutless and cheap..if your going to spear a guy..in the jewels at least do it to his face. Not Milan…Mr Gutless has to do it from behind and look to see if the refs are looking. Jeeezz…didn’t anyone tell him that 10 cameras have the video feed and 2 million ppl are watching what he’s doing? Dahhh….Hey i’m going to spear a guy..injure him..affect the game and no one will know!

      Really?

That could have been any of us, not just the people of Boston. For that we can all sympathize. Except you apparently. The good Bruins fans here have voiced their disdain what Lucid did here. Go crawl back into your socially backward hole that is the province of Quebec.

My apologies to all the good people of Quebec. A few bad apples have made you look bad. And then we have this guy that makes us all look bad.

Go Wings! (Can’t believe I just wrote that…)

    • mangoman1966 - Apr 18, 2014 at 11:18 PM

Sorry. I got to agree with you 100 per cent. A very dirty team although their fans will never admit it. Dekeyser played a great game tonight.

  20. beelza - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:54 PM

Nothing will happen to Lucic, nothing. Bettman will kill any discipline regarding Lucic. Weber slams Z’s head into the boards and nothing happened to Weber.

  21. podevil - Apr 18, 2014 at 11:03 PM

That kind of play deserves more than one game suspension…He is a repeat offender and clearly was looking to do some damage..It is bad enough the damage done during regular plays, without A goon like Lucic pulling something like this.. He should be suspended for the playoffs…And then go and deny he did it…The guy is stupid on top of it! Doesn’t he know he is on camera? MORON!

  24. mackattack29 - Apr 18, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Wow. This guy is just a poor excuse for a player in the sport I love so much. He’s everything that is wrong with the nhl right now. Jumping guys after they hit him. And fighting guys smaller than him and running away from guys like Orr and Laraque. I just have lost all patience with lucic at this point. Stabbing a guy with your stick in that area is just gutless and has no place in the game. I know he probably won’t get a suspension but I wish he would.

  25. 6superbowls - Apr 18, 2014 at 11:49 PM

Shannahan’s on vacation now, so Lucic won’t get anything. Then again? Shannahan’s been on vacation all year…

  27. titansbro - Apr 18, 2014 at 11:55 PM

Like many other Bs fans I like Lucic’s game but sometimes he just loses his head. His temper causes him to do stupid, stupid things. I mean, what was that bro? No man should ever hit another man in the balls. It’s just indefensible. I love the rough play & banging style but that was out of bounds dude. If they suspend him a game I wouldn’t be shocked or angry. Get your effing head on dude, it’s the playoffs!

:) this was funny like hell, it might even help NHL with ratings and stuff. Boys be boys…no matter how much they make they still behave like they are 9 year olds…So Lucic thanks for the laughs but I hope they suspend you a couple of games anyway, you deserve it. Bruins today seem to be Canucks of yesterday…everybody cheers for their opponents. I can’t believe I jumped when Red Wings scored…and I hate the freaking Wings….that tells you where Bruins are if Hawks fans, and everyone else I see, cheer for the Wings…

  30. isphet71 - Apr 19, 2014 at 12:42 AM

Playoffs or not, you do NOT go for a guy’s junk. You just don’t. It takes a truly rotten person to actually do something like that.

A slash to Dekeyser’s legs from behind would be a 1 game suspension, but a spear to his junk after denying doing it just weeks ago to someone else? That needs to be a second game suspension, playoffs or not. That’s at LEAST as bad as going directly for someone’s (big) head.

Makes the Bruins look a lot less classy than they should. You’re an original 6 team, play like you have some dignity. You aren’t the freaking Broad Street Bullies; and this isn’t the movie SlapShot, so quit acting like it is.

Win or lose this series, at least I can be proud of my Wings after this series for not stooping to such tactics.

    • erbaker67 - Apr 19, 2014 at 6:54 AM

As a Penguins fan, stop. Its that simple. The Penguins are not related to this story and have much bigger things to worry about than the Bruins. They need to shore up defensively and sustain offensive pressure. They could have just as easily lost Game 1.

I agree with most posters, I hate Milan but would love him on my team, until plays like that. Its the same thing with Neal. Neal has an unbelievable shot but dumb idiotic plays hurt the team. Worry about putting the puck in the net and helping out defensively. I wouldnt be shocked if Lucic is suspended one game but wouldnt be shocked if he got just a fine.

What a beauty buy Datsyuk though, guy is unreal.

      Great game.

  39. 13datsyuk13 - Apr 19, 2014 at 4:09 AM

Most importantly it shows what a great game Dekyser had. The Eastern Conference isn’t ready for a classy organization in the playoffs. Watch Detroit respond with a big game, not a stupid penalty.

You’d think a guy like bergeron would say something like that isn’t cool… I mean do the bruins not realize that they are turning the whole hockey world against them by condoning plays like this?

    Big Chicken! 2 game suspension!

  45. 101starmymedic - Apr 19, 2014 at 9:54 AM

He needs to be suspended for the rest of the playoffs. Two and three games suspensions are pointless.

Suspensions NEED to be so damn severe that players literally DO NOT do this again. Then everyone will see, oh holy crap, they are not messing around. You wanna play in the playoffs? Then play hard and not like a cheap piece of crap. Don’t take cheap shots. Play good solid Hockey.

Suspend him for the length of Boston’s tenure in the playoffs. He’ll think twice when he sits on the bench unable to help his team in the most important time of the year.

    Dirty move.

I hope he gets a fine. . . . more importantly, I would hope one of the other players (Chara or Bergeron) pulls him aside & has a little chat about keeping his emotions in check. (Sorry folks, this will not get him suspended, not in the playoffs – not saying he doesn’t deserve one, I’m just saying it won’t happen)

Lucic can be a better player than this, but his lack of control over his emotions is concerning. His reactions to the Rinaldo & Emelin hits in recent weeks were ridiculous, and this chop to the junk is uncalled for and complete bs. He’s lucky he didn’t put his team on the pk after that stunt. Against this Red Wings team, that could be all they need to put a game like this away.

I hope he gets his act together fast.

It’s OK for the Bruins to check the other team but you are not allowed to check them without getting your groin attacked.

“This isn’t the first time Lucic has allegedly delivered this kind of hit.”

It’s not alleged; there’s video right there.
