Video: Getzlaf bloodied after taking puck to face

Apr 17, 2014, 1:19 AM EDT

Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf had to be pleased with his team’s 4-3 win over Dallas in Game 1 on Wednesday, but probably wasn’t too happy with how it ended.

After nearly blowing a 4-0 lead, the Ducks were scrambling at the end of the third period to prevent the Stars from tying it up — which led to Getzlaf taking a Tyler Seguin shot to the face with 16 seconds remaining:

As the video shows, Getzlaf left the playing surface immediately and didn’t return. As for his condition postgame…

Shades of Sid’s broken jaw last year, except this shot was slower and Getz saw it coming, so he had a chance to ride out the blow. Hopefully it’s just a cut

he’s extremely lucky he was able to turn his head at the last second. if that hit him square, probably woulda knocked his mouth off his face.

Reminds me of Gregory Campbell blocking Malkin’s shot on a PK in last year’s playoffs.

    God, I love playoff hockey!!!!

Looks like the puck was knuckling as it was coming towards him and hit the upper part of his jaw flat like it was on edge. That might be the only thing that saved him. Damn that’s gotta hurt. He’s hockey tough though. Even with 16 seconds left, I’m surprised we didn’t see him come back out (kidding).

Glad it appears he’s going to be OK. I hate to see anyone get hit in the face with a puck. Well except maybe Rinaldo….
