Flyers coach: Akeson needs to ‘be better with his stick’

Apr 17, 2014, 10:18 PM EDT

It’s probably not very fair, but for many casual hockey fans and more than a few devoted ones, Philadelphia Flyers forward Jason Akeson will be known primarily as the guy who took a crippling hi-sticking penalty on Carl Hagelin in Game 1 on Thursday.

Here’s the play in question, which opened the door for the New York Rangers to score two power-play goals on the ensuing double-minor:

After the game, Flyers head coach Craig Berube simply said that Akeson needs to “be better with his stick,” according to ESPN’s Katie Strang.

As ignominious as that mistake might seem, there’s always the possibility that Akeson will bounce back with a redemptive effort in Game 2. Then again, some wonder if he’ll get that chance:

Either way, this is one of those mistakes that has the potential to haunt a player for some time. The Flyers can reduce that discomfort by winning some games, particularly Game 2, however.

Update: At least one outlook is relishing in throwing Akeson under the bus.

    Let’s Go Rangers!!!

  2. lowenni - Apr 17, 2014 at 10:26 PM

I don’t know. He looked pretty solid besides that and mistakes happen. Two years ago Joel Ward took a high sticking double minor against the Rangers and cost the Caps in overtime. He started the next game. Akeson was already a fringe player, but I think a guy with Berube’s penalty experience will let him off the hook, although he does need to be more careful.

    • gnashty - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:32 AM

While he does have to be careful with his stick, he played fairly well. He was actually one of the best players for the Flyers offensively last night(Not saying much unfortunately). His high stick wasn’t the main reason the Flyers lost that game. The PK unit has to kill at least half of it! Not to mention the Flyers just got dominated most of that game.. For whatever reason the Flyers cannot beat the Rangers in MSG to save their lives. Luckily it’s only one game! Onto game 2 Sunday! What a better way to spend Easter Sunday than on your couch yelling at the TV instead of family?

What the hell does #fflyera mean???

If you can’t make sense in 140, maybe you should try another media

Can’t say for sure, but I would guess it’s the author’s way of mocking certain ways the team makes decisions.

looks like a twitter group when you click on it ! Don’t really know !

    • goodolejr - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:23 AM

One of our terrible, terrible beat writers accidentally used “#flyera” instead of “#flyers” in a tweet and it’s been a joke ever since.

  4. blueshirtsfaithful - Apr 17, 2014 at 10:30 PM

Thanks flyers!!! Keep taking bad penalties!!

  5. biffnasty - Apr 17, 2014 at 10:45 PM

    Dirty dirty dirty..last 10 minutes,
All it was..classic filthy. Not surprised. At least the better team won

    • theref55 - Apr 18, 2014 at 9:11 AM

      “Dirty dirty dirty..last 10 minutes,”…
Coming from someone named Biffnasty? LOL… You couldnt survive in Philly with your fake Gucci purse in your hand…
Flyers will bounce back – only need one win in MSG.
Hey rangers fans – where are you moving in 9 years since City Council kicked you out of MSG with a 47-1 vote last July? Yep – your city lawmakers loves you!!

      • biffnasty - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:04 AM

Have you ever been to filthy? Unfortunately, I have on many occasions and it’s disgusting. Just sitting on the subway will give the aids. And that’s a known medical fact

      • theref55 - Apr 18, 2014 at 1:48 PM

Yep 47-1 vote speaks volumes. City Council values a moden renovated Penn Station more than its entertainment center. Well, no one values the Knicks and Dolan. Anyway – so its it to the soon to be empty NassaU Coliseum or the empty IZOD Center? Or is it going to be another failed West Side Highway project? Yep – 9 years and counting after spending 1 billion to renovate the “Worlds Most Famous Urinal”…

    • theref55 - Apr 18, 2014 at 1:42 PM

Dear Biffy – Yeah! I live and work in this great city that you continue to trash living in your mom’s basement. Show me in the American Journal of Medicine or any CDC white paper that our subway gives us AIDS? What studies have been done so I know when I ride Septa on its regional rail and subway what I can be exposed to? What clinical trials were done? How many people were broken into several trial groups? When was this announces since I MIGHT have missed it. Yep – love making you look like a fool BIFFY!! Well I know right now you cant answer this post because your yelling “Mom the Meatloaf!”.. Have a nice afternoon nap BIFFY!

  6. notmrknowitall - Apr 17, 2014 at 11:27 PM

Here’s an idea Chief. Get the morons to put out a decent effort and put that game away before it gets to that point. Just once it would be nice to see this team play a full 60 minutes. Tonight the 2nd period was average at best, the rest of the game was a disaster and the end result was totally justified. The more things change, the more they stay the same with this team.

  7. notmrknowitall - Apr 17, 2014 at 11:28 PM

And for the record CBS…this is the worst app in the history of the world. Every time you post a comment the stupid thing shuts down.

Oops..NBC I meant to type. but this will be the 3rd time it shuts down. here goes…..

  9. c9castine - Apr 17, 2014 at 11:37 PM

i would love to say the flyers lost this one because of a stupid penalty from an out of control player, but the flyers just werent good. period. thats why they lost really.

    • cofran2004 - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:18 AM

Akeson wasn’t really out of control, he just made a really dumb play… once. He wasn’t really known for dirty or undisciplined play when he was playing for the phantoms all season. I’m kind of shocked that of all the flyers that could have made this play, it was him.

      • goodolejr - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:29 AM

He was off-balance and it was clearly an accident. That being said, it’s still no excuse to even attempt that hit in the position he was in. Aside from that one play though, he was one of the better Flyers on the ice for most of the game. They looked absolutely terrible last night…which always seems to be the case when Emery’s in net though. For whatever reason, they seem to play better as a team with Mason in net. Guess it’s a confidence thing or something.

      • cofran2004 - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:33 AM

Akeson definitely doesn’t deserve all the blame here tonight. It’s not like the rangers powerplay has been deadly all season. those penalty killers made the rangers powerplay look like world-beaters.

I hope Akeson bounces back, he was one of the nicest guys on the phantoms. I still hope the flyers get beat 7-1 on sunday, but I hope Akeson scores that 1 xD

  10. biffnasty - Apr 17, 2014 at 11:37 PM

Not too mention it NEVER plays videos or let’s you comment from the app. Garbage.

  11. bobhpine - Apr 17, 2014 at 11:43 PM

What about when Claudette took repeated high slash attempt at Moore? Any mention? The excuse machine is revving up in Philly.

One Cup since 1940 “isnt a proud tradition”.

  12. broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 17, 2014 at 11:44 PM

Feel bad for the kid. He was one of the only Flyers that showed up to play tonight and he was falling down when the stick came up.

    • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Apr 18, 2014 at 4:24 AM

Totally agree. People aren’t taking into account he was falling when it happened. The full blame can’t be put on him. Flyers should of put on a better effort. I’ve been watchin this kid all year an wondering when they were gonna give him a shot an he finally got it an a complete accident happens an he’s the automatic whipping boy. He’s looked great the last two games an he’ll bounce back from that an prove why he deserves to be up with the flyers. That 3rd looks even better with him on it

      • cofran2004 - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:22 AM

Akeson was phenomenal all year for the phantoms. Anyone that can score 20 on that terrible team deserves at least a look. I wish he was still down for the last game in glens falls tonight, but I’m glad he’s getting a shot with the flyers.

I’m still rooting against his team, but really… i wasn’t wishing for him to cause a loss like this. I was hoping for a 4-1 rangers win where Akeson scored the 1 goal.

  13. nashernation - Apr 18, 2014 at 12:08 AM

Flyers played a decent game but took some terrible penalties. Could have been at least four more calls tonight. The Rangers power play will make them pay big time for those foolish penalties. Let’s go Rangers!

  14. shwatson - Apr 18, 2014 at 1:59 AM

Someone tell the Flyers they’re not playing the Penguins… Yet.

    • barkar942 - Apr 18, 2014 at 2:05 AM

Don’t bother to tell them. That meeting will be sometime next October.

  15. Hockeyfan - Apr 18, 2014 at 7:03 AM

Why is everyone blaming it on the penalty? What about the penalty killers? Don’t they share some of the responsibility?
Penalties are part of the game. You have to be ready to defend. The PK looked like deer in headlights.

  16. youvebeenphaneufed - Apr 18, 2014 at 8:29 AM

The Flyers lost because Emery was totally lost out there. He couldn’t find the puck to save his life (yeah, there’s a pun there). Juicy rebounds all night, looked shaky when the Rangers would dump the puck in directly at him, with no pressure. I’d rather have Boucher or Leighton out there.

On a side note, I know the Flyers are a “physical team” but the refs needs to be consistent with their calls. 1st period was a perfect example…Simmonds gets interfered with behind the Rangers’ net, no call. Then at the other end, Hall gets called for it literally 25 seconds later. Yeah, Hall’s was interference, but so was the hit on Simmonds. I don’t mind if the refs call stuff, but it has to be consistent the whole game.

  17. bleedrangerblue - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:12 AM

Flyers are dirty, lousy scumbags. It’s a fact. Flyer fans stop whining.

  18. cantstandstupid - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:26 AM

It sucks he got the penalty which basically gave the momentum back to the Rangers, but I can’t deny that he seemed like the only player on the ice that was giving a solid effort. If he was bigger that probably would have never happened, but since he’s on the smaller side, it just looked like he tried to throw all his weight into the check and he just lost his balance. I wonder what line up changes (if any) they are going to make. I’d like to see Gill play. I think he played well the last 2 games of the season and he would add stability on the back line. They were scrambling around like chickens with their heads cut off.

  19. whammy71 - Apr 18, 2014 at 10:46 AM

Typical Cryer fans whining. The band of misfit gingers couldn’t go a whole game without making a caveman hockey play…typical for the franchise. This time the Rags made ’em pay the price!

And yinz are lucky your ginger captain didn’t connect when he swung his stick at a Rangers head. He should be suspened for the intenet anyways….but the NHL isn’t that smart.

Maybe Milbury will start calling Berube the Professor of Goonism.

  20. phillyphanatic77 - Apr 18, 2014 at 12:22 PM

This was one of the worst Flyers game I’ve watched all season. Yes Akeson was the catalyst for collapse but they were lucky it was still 1-1 at that point. They played with no effort, no heart, or “jam” as Lavy would say. The Rangers won 90% of the puck battles, their defense was suffocating, and the Flyers didn’t even test Lundqvist. I mean biggest game of the year and the guy who takes a back-breaking penalty was probably the only one who showed up.

I don’t get it, this Rangers team is not that much better. They’ve just played so well against us at MSG that they play with amazing confidence. I mean watching them move and control the puck last night it was like the Flyers were the designated defensive team. Philly NEEDS to win races to the puck when they chip, they NEED to win puck battles along the boards (at both ends), they NEED their big money guys to make an appearance, and they NEED to play with discipline. The Rangers are a good team but cmon they looked the 2000 Devils they way they suffocated us.

  21. cantstandstupid - Apr 18, 2014 at 1:38 PM

I have a question for actual Flyers fans on here. Why does it seem that for the last few years that the Flyers refuse to setup shots from the defensemen? Especially in a game like last night where the Rangers were pressuring the forwards so much. Setting up shots from the point works perfectly with the idea of getting traffic to the front of the net. They seem to crash guys to the net in hopes to squeeze a pass through, instead of giving the puck back to someone on defense and letting them get a shot loose. This was most confusing when they acquired Pronger. He had one of the harder shots in the NHL at the time, but he would mostly just pass it down low just to have a forward cough up the puck. It is infuriating to watch and it’s an error that I constantly see. Are they not doing it because the other team is blocking shots? My response to that is if they want to try and block your shot then either shoot higher to get it over them or shoot harder to make them second guess the next time they want to block a shot. The Flyers will have a game once in a blue moon where they shoot from the point and win, but then the next game I see them trying to fit a pass through a crowd instead of taking the easy pass back to the point. This is where a coach needs to make adjustments on the fly, but I rarely see that happen with the Flyers.

I hope they can bounce back, but yesterday’s effort was very disappointing. I’ve watched most of every game in the playoffs this year and the Flyers effort was the poorest by far.
