Apr 16, 2014, 7:00 AM EDT

StanleyCupPlayoffs14

Welcome to ProHockeyTalk’s springtime tradition of embarrassing the staff! Comprised of myself (Mike Halford), Jason Brough, Joe Yerdon, James O’Brien, Ryan Dadoun and Cam Tucker, the PHT braintrust is once again doing round-by-round picks for the Stanley Cup playoffs, which you will be able to stash away and use as ammunition at a later date.

So with that stellar intro out of the way, here are our fearless first round picks. Be sure to add yours in the comments section — if you do well, there’s a chance we’ll mention it in a future post, which is about as good a prize as you’ll get from a hockey blog. What, you were expecting jet skis? This this ain’t the Showcase Showdown.

  6. capspats - Apr 16, 2014 at 8:32 AM

Even tho my caps are out, hockey playoffs are so fun and WAYYY better than nba playoffs.

    • patthehockeyfan - Apr 16, 2014 at 9:21 AM

Second time I read the term NBA. What’s an NBA? ;)

      • JoeAvg - Apr 16, 2014 at 9:30 AM

        No Balls Alliance?

    • laxnhockey - Apr 16, 2014 at 10:44 AM

IMO, the only thing that comes close to the hockey playoffs is the men’s Olympic downhill, but that doesn’t last two months!

Let’s just hope NBC Sports does us all a favor and recognizes the value of their fans by keeping Mike Milbury out of the booth and off of our screens during intermissions throughout the playoffs.

  7. toiletclown - Apr 16, 2014 at 8:40 AM

    NO MORE …

will I ever read another article written by either Halford, Dadoun or Tucker (Sharks in ‘7’ my ass) … as for Brough, Yerdon and O’Brien ? … well friends, suffice it to say that these guys ‘know’ what they’re talking about ! … yes sir ! … realistically however, I highly doubt if it’s going to take us Kings that long (6-7) in-order to dispatch a bunch of stupid tropical fish !

    Blomfeld’s Prediction: KINGS IN FOUR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

    • patthehockeyfan - Apr 16, 2014 at 10:03 AM

      NO MORE …

      Promise?

  12. penvik - Apr 16, 2014 at 10:19 AM

    Lightning in 7
    Rangers in 7
    Detroit in 6

    Anaheim in 6
    LA in 6
    Chicago in 6

  13. patthehockeyfan - Apr 16, 2014 at 10:47 AM

Interesting! Brough’s the only one to pick the Wild over the Avs. No offense, Jason; but, I hope you’re wrong. I bet some Vegas $$ on the Avs yesterday.

Other than the Pens, the rest of the picks aren’t unanimous. What’s interesting is that, in 3 of the series, there was just one dissenting pick:

St. Louis vs. Chicago – only Tucker picking the Blues
Boston vs. Detroit – only Halford picking the Wings (good luck with that!)
    Brough’s Wild over Avs pick

Why does the freaking clock tick soooooooooooo slowly today?

    Let’s Get It Started!!!!!

  14. laxnhockey - Apr 16, 2014 at 10:49 AM

    Pens in 5
    Bruins in 7 (OT)
    Habs in 5

      • patthehockeyfan - Apr 16, 2014 at 10:54 AM

Actually, Kings in 7 was your good.

  17. greatmiamisportsmind - Apr 16, 2014 at 12:08 PM

lol nobody giving Minnesota a chance to beat Colorado…

    • patthehockeyfan - Apr 16, 2014 at 12:14 PM

Brough picked the Wild. That’s Jason, all right. He of wild dreams and wild predictions.

      • greatmiamisportsmind - Apr 16, 2014 at 2:30 PM

He’s the only one. Besides me. Wild in 6. Avs don’t have Duchesne for at least the first 2 games. Colorado has a young roster with not much playoff experience. Playoff hockey is a whole different animal than regular season hockey. Roy is a rookie head coach, not that Yeo has much either, but he’s at least been in tke playoffs once. The whole series will hinge on Bryzgalov. He can either help the Wild win this series if he plays as good as he has of late, or be the Bryzgalov Philadelphia and Phoenix saw, then it could be over quick.

      • nothanksimdriving123 - Apr 16, 2014 at 2:48 PM

FWIW, Brough came the closest of them all in predicting this year’s men’s Oly results. He had Canada beating Sweden for the gold and the US beating Russia for the bronze. So he had 3 of 4 medal contenders in the right games, and one right winner. None of the others came that close.

    • guitarisgood4u - Apr 16, 2014 at 3:20 PM

I guess the “why not us” mantra belongs to the Wild this series.

  18. 19to77 - Apr 16, 2014 at 2:17 PM

    Ducks in 6
    Kings in 7
    Avs in 6
    Hawks in 6

    Bruins in 7
    Bolts in 6
    Penguins in 6
    Flyers in 7

There’ll probably be a couple blowouts that throw this way off, but hell with it, I like close matches and that’s what I’m hoping for. The more hockey the better.

  19. spitfisher - Apr 16, 2014 at 4:49 PM

    Bruins in 7????

Detroits goalie is good, not great, they are banged-slowly coming back and Detroits defense overall will have their hands full with 4 lines of bruins- 3 of which can score quickly and effectively. Bruins goal tending can shut down even a hot team for an entire series And the bruins have home ice.

    7 games-really?? I’m thinking of maybe 5

    • balloo22 - Apr 16, 2014 at 6:03 PM

They’ll shut you down defensively except for the greatest 17 seconds in sports history!!!!

  20. slaugin - Apr 16, 2014 at 6:56 PM

“17 Seconds” doesn’t bother me. Yea it sucked at the time and it probably would hurt a lot more if we hadn’t just won a cup but Chicago played their asses off and deserved to win.
