Hertl: Rematch vs. Kings ‘personal’ after Brown hit, injury

Tomas Hertl hasn’t forgotten the manner in which his season was nearly ended.

The Sharks rookie, who suffered two torn knee ligaments on a hit from Kings captain Dustin Brown in December, returned from a 45-game absence over the weekend to play a pair and get back into shape for the playoffs.

Hertl explained that going up against L.A. in the opening round is his shot at revenge.

From NHL.com:

“It’s personal,” Hertl said after practice Monday. “It’s L.A. … For me, it’s more motivation because (it’s) L.A. I want to beat L.A.”

After playing the Colorado Avalanche on Friday in his first game in nearly four months, Hertl couldn’t help but look ahead to the postseason.

“Playoff time, it’s more important, because it’s L.A.,” Hertl said. “I [don’t] much like L.A. this season.”

Here’s the hit in question, which earned Brown a five-minute major and game misconduct:

The Sharks were irate following the incident, and not just because they lost the services of their rookie sensation, who had 10 goals and 25 points in his first 35 games. GM Doug Wilson said he was “disappointed” in Brown’s lack of concern for Hertl — following the game, Brown said the refs got the call wrong — and in the first rematch between L.A. and San Jose, Tommy Wingels blasted Brown for declining his invite to fight, saying the Kings captain “doesn’t want to own up” for what he did to Hertl.

Wingels was at it again on Monday.

“[Hertl] wasn’t happy about it, we weren’t happy about it,” Wingels said of the Brown hit. “He’s aware that it was against the Kings.

“He would love to stick it to them by winning the series.”

Pretend that hit never happened and these are still two teams that hate each other. This is gonna be must watch late night TV for us East Cost folk.

God, Wednesday night can’t get here soon enough.

Work is dragggggggggging right now. So is my productivity – reading NHL stuff is more enjoyable.

For sure. I quite dislike both teams and they dislike eachother – can make for the most entertaining hockey as you get to cheer for every goal, hit and scrap. California is going to make this play-offs a meat grinder no doubt.

This will be the top series to watch in round 1

  6. flyingswede - Apr 15, 2014 at 1:04 PM

Sick and tired of this being called an illegal hit, they both had their knees out. Not surprised to see sharks players following suit about non calls just like their fans.

  7. sharksman - Apr 15, 2014 at 1:13 PM

Go Sharks ! nuff said !

  8. sjsharks66 - Apr 15, 2014 at 1:21 PM

flyingswede and we are all sick of people defending Dustin Brown. By we of course I mean everyone that is not a Kings fan.

  9. blomfeld - Apr 15, 2014 at 1:35 PM

“A BUNCH OF CANDY-ASSED TROPICAL FISH”

So said a friend of mine only yesterday (Stransky) in reference to the Sharks and their stupid ‘ongoing’ inferiority complex. Personally, I just get really sick and tired hearing all their crying and whining about what was essentially nothing more than a red-blooded ‘hockey’ play. If you can’t take the heat Hertl, then get the hell out of the kitchen ! … either that or change your stupid last name to ‘Safel’ or something !

    GO KINGS GO !!!

THIS TIME, LET’S ‘REALLY’ PUT THE BOOTS TO THESE BASTARDS !!!!!!

    • hookersdontsnuggle - Apr 15, 2014 at 2:23 PM

It must be April because all the kings “fans’ are starting to chime in. Same time every year.

    • titansrbeast - Apr 15, 2014 at 4:08 PM

Safel? That is the best you can do? Not that it really matters of course, I doubt many real fans take into consideration your meaningless opinion day after day…I’d have to say you’re probably one of the worst troll’s I’ve ever seen. You try to be funny, but sadly you’re just not. You’re stale old friend, you need new material.

  10. joey4id - Apr 15, 2014 at 2:03 PM

I hope Hertl drops them against Brown to seek retribution. That’s how hockey was at one time. The victim would not depend on others for retribution but seek it on his own. Go Hertl!

BTW, and Brown should just skate away. Save the kid another trip to the hospital.

    Go Kings!

    • thailer35 - Apr 15, 2014 at 2:53 PM

But what about the blows to the head? C’mon joey, you’re flip flopping like a politician.

      • joey4id - Apr 15, 2014 at 3:01 PM

Certainly we were able to detect the sarcasm in my comment. Yes?

      • joey4id - Apr 15, 2014 at 3:02 PM

        *you —- Shoot! :-)

  11. sjsharks66 - Apr 15, 2014 at 2:24 PM

Save the kid a trip to the hospital? I remember Kesler stomping a mud hole in Brown awhile back…. Brown is not some vicious fighter. The only way he sends someone to the hospital is by trying to destroy their knees or elbowing them in the head.

    • joey4id - Apr 15, 2014 at 3:27 PM

Relax. I was being sarcastic. Move on and try to get 4 wins. Who cares about retribution? My advice to Hertl and the sharks is, put the biscuit in the basket. Stop the whining already.

  12. pirovash88 - Apr 15, 2014 at 5:41 PM

    Retribution? Good luck guppies.

  13. blomfeld - Apr 15, 2014 at 8:43 PM

HERTL, KNEES AND SUCH AS …

The bottom line is that ‘blessed are those who love the King’ as recorded in Psalms 13:4

    • slysipops - Apr 16, 2014 at 11:01 AM

it’s love the KING ( JESUS ) ……….not the KINGS ( hockey team ) EASTER WEEK BLOMS,let’s not confuse people !

  14. helloname01 - Apr 16, 2014 at 12:45 AM

That thug Brown has been throwing cheap shots around again huh? Whodathunkit?

  15. ryanator0617 - Apr 16, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Turtle Brown has some answering to do. LA is the most overrated team in hockey. LA Kings=King Joffrey. Entitled, arrogant pretenders and everyone just wants you gone. LETS GO SHARKS!!! Put those QUEENS in their places…
