Big day of d-man signings in Philly — shortly after the club inked Andrew MacDonald to a six-year, $30 million extension, the Flyers announced they’ve agreed to terms with Union College standout Shayne Gostisbehere.

Gostisbehere, 20, was taken in the third round (78th overall) at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and has spent the last three years at Union, helping the Dutchmen win their first-ever NCAA national title over the weekend with a 7-4 victory over Minnesota.

Gostisbehere scored a goal and added two assists in the win over the Golden Gophers, capping off a year in which he was named a first team All-American, a finalist for the Hobey Baker award and Frozen Four MVP.

The blueliner will report directly to AHL Adirondack.

Thank God!!! Much Needed after the overpaid Mac D signing

Whew! After the recent comments I’ve seen with him talking about players being able to pick any team after staying their final year at school I was worried. Hopefully the Flyers don’t make a typical Flyers move and trade him for an aging vet. I’m excited for what our defense could be next year.

He will need a year in ahl to add some muscle and fine tune his defensive zone play.

Gost, Hagg, Morin…Holmgren has been adding some young top-end Dmen via the draft lately. The Flyers future is looking a little more promising. For a while there it was a “Centers or bust” draft strategy.

Yes this is excellent news! Watched this kid quite a bit the past two years and I’ve been thoroughly impressed. I was really hoping Union would win so he would have more incentive to test the next level and that seems to be what happened. Can’t wait to get to get him some AHL experience, and maybe, just maybe, win a job at the NHL level. Easily the most electric Flyers D prospect since Pitkanen (tho hopefully his Flyers career turns out better).

And I gotta say they overpaid for MacDonald but the guy has been invaluable to balancing out the D pairs and rarely ever makes mistakes. He’s saved Luke Schenn plenty of time and that’s worth extra cash.

HAHAHAHA The Flygirls are doing it all over again! They love destroying their own franchise!!

How can a guy who comments so incessantly always have nothing to say? Take a 5-minute break from trolling Flyers articles and do something worthwhile with your petty little life.

        FLUSH

Is the only worthy comment to leave for this child.

Will be in the ahl in 2 seasons

      Why rush him?

  7. djshnooks - Apr 15, 2014 at 2:13 PM

He is a great defenseman, and a great person. I have met him numerous times.

Philly got a good one here, no doubt.

He won’t stop working til he gets there.

So happy about this, he’s been great to watch the past couple years and it will be even better to see him in flyers gear, whenever that happens.

Watching Gostisbehere play has been enjoyable already. Listening to people on TV try to pronounce his name might prove painful for a while.

Ghostisabihairy will disappear in the Adirondacks. Like Big Foot

    • lilgurgi - Apr 15, 2014 at 4:08 PM

Need to get up on the news. Well known fact they are moving back to PA (Lehigh Valley) starting next season.

      • phillyinknoxville - Apr 15, 2014 at 4:38 PM

You are correct. They’re moving to Allentown to play in the PPL Center, and will be renamed the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

dumb big foot comment, just out of curiosity, how can something thats never been found disappear? its like a chicken or the egg question if chickens didnt exist.

Can’t wait to hear Don Cherry try and pronounce that name.

Boatloads of talent as demonstrated in the recent Frozen Four tournament, and his plus seven in the championship game was impressive, but he’s going to need to bulk up if he’s going to be an effective defenseman in the NHL.
