Union College claims first national championship

Apr 13, 2014, 9:48 AM EDT

In what was a true team effort, Union College has established itself as NCAA national champions for the first time.

The Dutchmen earned a 7-4 victory over top-ranked Minnesota in the title game last night. Eleven different players found the back of the net between the two teams in the high-scoring affair.

After Minnesota established two early leads, Union broke out with three goals over the span of just 1:54 minutes late in the first period, courtesy of Mike Vecchione, Eli Lichtenwald, and Daniel Ciampini.

“The staple of our team all year — we come in waves,” Union captain Mat Bodie said, per NCAA.com. “All three of those goals were pack-of-wolf goals where we were just throwing the puck on net.”

Minnesota managed to keep things interesting after that, but never retook the lead. On the Gophers side of things, 20-year-old forward Justin Kloos stood out with a goal and an assist.

“He controlled the game,” Minnesota coach Don Lucia said. “From my vantage point, he was the best player on the ice [Saturday].”

Philadelphia Flyers prospect Shayne Gostisbehere also recorded a goal and two assists for Union and had a remarkable plus-seven rating.

That game was everything that’s great about hockey.

Congrats to Union College in Schenectady NY

      Who?

  3. greej1938l - Apr 13, 2014 at 10:12 AM

For being a great coach. I one hundred percent disagree with him.(Lucia) It’s a 7-4 game there skipper! No one controlling that game! Just two teams battling it out. Better team won. Simple.

Man congrats Union college…..I know the Flyers two years ago missed out on Ryan Suter when he was a free agent well turns out they may have drafted their own Ryan Suter … a +7 in a National Championship Game man Shayne Gostisbehere something tells me that won’t be the last trophy you skate around with on that ice in the next few years

    • greatmiamisportsmind - Apr 13, 2014 at 5:40 PM

Really? Comparing Shayne Gostisbehere to a 2 time Olympian and All-Star might just be a little over the top…

      • hockeyfan28 - Apr 14, 2014 at 12:00 AM

Yep your right Suter never won a national championship and the MVP of the final four for a college that doesn’t give out scholarships so Shane is better

Man, they won last night and it took this long to post? NBC sports are tools

    • greatmiamisportsmind - Apr 13, 2014 at 5:43 PM

Kinda sad for a website (who’s owned by NBC who owns NBCSN) who was trying to give more college hockey run. My guess is if it wasn’t on the 4 letter network, this would have been posted within 5 minutes of union winning

Also, Deadspin has complete coverage of Minnesota fans rioting.

    • greatmiamisportsmind - Apr 13, 2014 at 5:44 PM

Those aren’t Minnesota fans rioting. Those are complete bafoons who don’t know anything about hockey, just wanting a reason to cause drama.

Dinkytown rioted because Minny won their championship Thursday night. Last night was just an exhibition game right? Sioux Yea Yea

Take a look at the Olympic roster for individual players…and now Union joins the likes of RIT and Clarkson to put some schools on the map in hockey…

But hockey in Upstate, NY, is nothing to laugh at. I’ve been saying this for a while now…we’re coming for that “Hockey Town USA” title, but it’s not a “town,” it’s an entire region that gets overlooked for the quality hockey we turn our year after year, whether it be players or schools, we get it done.

This is why Terry Pegula is building (basically) Team USA Headquarters with the HarborCenter where they will hold many tournaments, probably the NHL combine…and more events within time.

It’s exciting and it’s awesome for hockey…especially USA hockey! :-)

Rochester, Ithaca, Buffalo, Syracuse, Potsdam…Cornell, Clarkson, RIT, Union, RPI, St. Lawrence. Big time hockey everywhere you go, I f***ing love it! Lol.

    ECAC…No more EZAC! #Respect

Congrats to Union — good win for the team that clearly was better. The U of M looked like it was starting 8 freshmen and only 4 seniors for that game. At least they made it a game.

  16. phillyphanatic77 - Apr 14, 2014 at 12:57 PM

I was really hoping this would happen so that Gostisbehere might feel like he has achieved all that can in college. Anyway it’s a big deal for a school like Union to upset to some traditional powerhouses. Watched both these games and I can’t wait to see the kid in orange and black. You can bet Homer has his ELC waiting for him.

Bodie, their other star defender looks like he might get some attention from NHL teams too. Nice job Union.
