Video: Fleury makes spectacular sprawling shootout save

Apr 9, 2014, 11:22 PM EDT

Marc-Andre Fleury has always been known for his athletic ability. But this. This was something else.

Fleury made a spectacular desperation, sprawling save on Daniel Alfredsson in the shootout of Wednesday’s 4-3 win for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It looked like Alfredsson had Fleury beat and a wide open net to bury the puck. But Fleury rolled over onto his back and threw out the glove to make the save. We’ve seen this before in the past – from goaltending great Dominik Hasek.

He’s pretty good, but he’s no Rick DiPietro

I felt like I was watching PensTV when they do the mustache boy shootout. Nobody better in the business and he was flexing the shootout muscles hard tonight! Not that that skillset would really help the situation a week from now, but if it helps boost his confidence than let it go 20 rounds! I’m all for it!

how is it “unreal” when all alfredsson did was shovel the puck towards the net. it’s a good save, but if he elevates the puck like the announcer said, it’s a sure goal

Ugh, said like someone who doesn’t play or watch hockey.

Quit bein a turd sandwhich. On any amazing save, theres a shot thats not quite what it could be or what the shooter wanted to be

Quite the backup plan for the poke check attempt.
    Epic.

I always thought Hasek was overrated just like Fleury is. Flopping around on the ice and throwing appendages in different directions without any direction is not skill, it’s luck. Fleury had the advantage of knowing which direction to flop, that doesn’t take skill.

    • thomasvanek - Apr 10, 2014 at 6:22 AM

You have to have luck to be good and good to have luck. You saying that Hasek is overrated is the most idiotic post I’ve seen in a while.

      • 101starmymedic - Apr 10, 2014 at 9:28 AM

Patrick Roy is the greatest goalie of our time. Hasek IS overrated. Roy is not. God damn he was good. Hasek, Fleury, whatever, flop flop flop.

      • thomasvanek - Apr 10, 2014 at 12:21 PM

So because Hasek was unorthodox that means he wasn’t good? You don’t use your brain much do you?

      • 101starmymedic - Apr 10, 2014 at 1:35 PM

Call it unorthodox, call it floppy, call it Susan, I don’t care, he’s overrated.

      • thomasvanek - Apr 10, 2014 at 4:48 PM

I’m not going to argue with your idiocy. If you have nothing to back up your argument you have no argument. Hasek’s career save percentage is .922 while Roy’s is .910.

There are no shoot outs in the playoffs so if they are going to put their season on his shoulders good luck with that.

    • steelpenbucs87 - Apr 10, 2014 at 9:17 AM

Well to be fair he also made 34 saves in the game and if it weren’t for an absolutely insane deflection, they probably escape in regulation….

Playing like a true legend. Cant wait until he can hoist the Stanley Cup up in a few months. Peace & Love Peace & Love

Cant wait to see the Pens doing the skate of shame again this year through the handshake line. Better get Vokoun ready and the shrink for the Flower!

Fleury is always a beast in shootouts. This save was incredible, call it luck or skill he made the save on a good move by a veteran player.

  10. chicagobtech - Apr 10, 2014 at 9:49 AM

    Fleury’s stop.
    Patrick Sharp’s GWG weirdness.
    Jussi Jokinen’s shootout weirdness.

It was a night of memorable goals.

Fleury has actually played well down the stretch towards the Playoffs, I can’t his done that in years past, hopefully this bodes well for the Playoffs. Fleury in my opinion has looked like a different goalie this year, he seems more stable in net mentally and Physically.
