Video: Rinaldo levels Lucic with big open-ice hit, draws penalty in ensuing scrum

Apr 5, 2014, 2:21 PM EST

Philadelphia Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo successfully got under the skin of the Boston Bruins early in this afternoon’s contest.

Less than a minute into the game, Rinaldo knocked Milan Lucic to the ice with a big, but clean open-ice hit. Lucic got back up ready to fight, but Rinaldo passed on the opportunity and instead Lucic was the one that ended up in the box for roughing.

You can see the hit below:

The Bruins managed to kill the penalty and Lucic got revenge by assisting on David Krejci‘s opening goal at 15:56 of the first period.

After dropping three straight games, the Flyers are in danger of losing their hold on the Metropolitan Division’s third seed. If they end up sliding into the second Wild Card position, then their first round opponent would be the Bruins.

Lucic got smoked by the best and cleanest hitter in the big leagues ! Lucic got up and acted like a punk as usual !

    • Moop - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:31 PM

Jarome Iginla did the exact same thing last week and nobody said a word. What gives?

      • crazemastercraze - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:41 PM

NBC/Comcast connection. It’s all Flyers, all the time. Even when they don’t deserve the coverage

      • mp1131211 - Apr 6, 2014 at 12:34 AM

Actually it’s because no one cares and everyone loves seeing the Bruins get their clocks cleaned.

    • flyerspsu - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:59 PM

this site posts big hits all the time, they posted the Bolig hit on Parise and 2 Muzzin hits in the same game just to name a few in the last couple days

this was a huge hit by a guy on someone who has 5 inches and 40 lbs on him, not sure why you are so annoyed this was posted

    • flyerspsu - Apr 5, 2014 at 11:58 PM

Well what iginla did with rinaldo and consistently does after being hit is come over to you and ask you to fight, maybe give a light cross check but nothing over the top, lucic tends to as he did here throw off his gloves and grab you by the throat and give you some glove punches while getting in your face trying to intimidate you into dropping the gloves

  2. claudegirwho - Apr 5, 2014 at 2:31 PM

This would be a game worth watching if I didn’t have to listen to the Boston announcer. Like nails on a chalkboard and the biggest homer of them all.

    • joey4id - Apr 5, 2014 at 2:36 PM

Not much better listening to Philly announcers. Every team’s announcers are homers. Flyers have some of the worse. Jones and Coates…. bad!

      • bsaures - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:24 PM

Except when u watch a montreal game on CBC the announcers will cheer for anyone but montreal and then send in PJ stock to be a dbag in the intermissions.

      • claudegirwho - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:42 PM

I’d rather listen to Philly and I’m a pittsburgh fan

      • flyerspsu - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:53 PM

the Philly announcers are homers, but not to the point of Boston homerism, Jack Edwards takes it to another level

also how can you not like Coates? Hes that drunk uncle that you cant take seriously but enjoy his company

      • cheesesteak75 - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:12 PM

Pittsburgh’s Mike Lange is one of the all time best.

      • c9castine - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:30 PM

cheesesteak, mike lange is THE all time best. one of few hall of famers behind the Mic today.

unfortunately some a$$bag let him go in favor of steigerwald in 2005, which to this day nobody in pittsburgh understands.

but the hall of famer is still on the radio, as a Penguins employee, every night with phil bourque.

    • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Apr 6, 2014 at 12:45 AM

How are the Philly announcers the worst? I think your the only person that watches the flyers that doesn’t love coatsy and Jim Jackson. He’s one of the best announcers in the league hands down. Boston’s is by far the worst one. Even the sharks announcers is better and they’re horrible. I’d rather hear emerick who is almost the worst then hear jack Edwards.

  4. slaugin - Apr 5, 2014 at 2:53 PM

Of all the things going on in this game, this is what you chose to write about??

    • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:10 PM

Here is your chance,,, write about all the things going on in this game !

      • thesportsjudge - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:34 PM

Looks like a win for Boston.

      • thesportsjudge - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:37 PM

“In the second period Shawn Thornton cruised through and nailed Scott Hartnell with a hit, and the Flyers forward clearly took exception to it while jawing with the B’s enforcer. Thornton immediately dropped the gloves to go after Hartnell, who skated away and wanted nothing to do with it.”

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:46 PM

I guess thorton was looking for a win since he lost to the flyers enforcer Rosehill earlier in the game wooooooooooo !

      • thesportsjudge - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:53 PM

How are those 2 points the Flyers got today? Oh, right…..

    • c9castine - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:31 PM

look how quick the boston fans are to cry.

there are other things written about this game.

  5. crazemastercraze - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:34 PM

On a positive note that actually matters, Flyers lose

  6. alicesrightfootesq - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:48 PM

He should have fought Lucic. No reason for him to run away.

    • thesportsjudge - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:55 PM

Bad trade-off for Boston. Bruins lose a first line scorer, Philadelphia loses a border-line 4th line scrub? No thanks.

    • flyerspsu - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:55 PM

      2 reasons:

      1. Lucic has 5 inches and 40 lbs on him

      2. it was a clean hit

      • thesportsjudge - Apr 5, 2014 at 4:09 PM

I do agree with the fact it WAS a clean hit.

      • flyerspsu - Apr 5, 2014 at 4:19 PM

Rinaldo always catches the ire of tough guys around the league for his big clean hits and then people trash him for not always accepting those invitations from guys like Orr, Lucic, Engelland even tho they are so much bigger and he delivered a clean hit

Rinaldo has fought guys like Thornton, Bissonette, Sestito, Fritz etc., you cant just expect him accept every fight offer from these heavyweights when he did nothing wrong

        just my 2 cents

    • c9castine - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:32 PM

actually, Lucic’s 2 minutes in the penalty box are an incredibly good reason for him to “run away”.

why in the F do people think there needs to be a fight after every decent hit? must be the most annoying part of hockey culture in my eyes.

  7. elmerbrownelmerbrown - Apr 5, 2014 at 4:43 PM

Lucic wanted to fight because he was embarrassed badly by a way smaller player WHEWWWWWWW !

    • thesportsjudge - Apr 5, 2014 at 5:01 PM

Correct. His response afterwards was score some goals and get his team 2 points. How did Rinaldo end up doing?

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Apr 6, 2014 at 7:55 AM

The big goof chara runs around and does the same thing

  8. c9castine - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:35 PM

why does chara feel the need to come running over like mama bird every time one of his guys gets touched? it was a body check. deal with it.

that mentality has been ramping up in boston for several years now and is going to culminate in them losing their heads when it matters most on of these times.

chicago is a model of self control. one of their players gets tagged, they just focus more on winning the game. might have something to do with their 2 cups in recent years. something to be said for it.

    • drewzducks - Apr 6, 2014 at 1:56 AM

Yet this lack of discipline you seem to be concerned about has been prevalent in the team’s play for the last 5-6 years, which might have played a part in their 2 cup appearances and 1 championship in the last 3 seasons.

    I luv Loooooooch

    • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Apr 6, 2014 at 11:18 AM

      Looooooooooooch is a frustrated h-mo

  10. nyjetblue - Apr 6, 2014 at 4:31 AM

I’m a Ranger fan that despises the Flyers but respects the B’s, so I tuned in rooting for a Bruins win. After one period of listening to those douchy homer NESN announcers I found myself first unconsciously, then outwardly rooting for the Flyers to score.
