Boston clinches top Eastern Conference record, edges Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers managed to find the back of the net this afternoon, which is more than they could say about some of their recent losses, but it wasn’t enough to reverse their fortunes.

Although they were evenly matched with the Bruins for most of the contest, Boston’s Johnny Boychuk and Milan Lucic scored just 31 seconds apart late in the third period to hand the Bruins a 5-2 victory.

Forward David Krejci got the Bruins on the board first in the first period. Wayne Simmonds even things 14:36 minutes into the second period, giving Philadelphia its first goal in 165:01 minutes, per the Philadelphia Daily News’ Frank Seravalli.

Loui Eriksson also had a big game with a season-high four assists. The Bruins needed their top players to click today after it was determined that Jarome Iginla would miss the game due to a lower-body injury.

With this victory, Boston has guaranteed it will finish the 2013-14 campaign with the best record in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s hold on the third seed in the Metropolitan Division is vulnerable. It is entirely possible that the Flyers will slip to the second Wild Card spot, which would trigger a first round series between these two teams.

this would be a great playoff series but the flyers wont last long enough to get a shot at them

  2. bruinsfan55 - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:46 PM

    Let’s go Bruins!

  3. pitpenguinsrulez - Apr 5, 2014 at 3:56 PM

Jack Edwards by far the WORST!!! Announcer in the NHL!!!!! I really wish NHL would’ve gone with the Flyers feed.

    • thesportsjudge - Apr 5, 2014 at 4:00 PM

      He really is awful.

    • claudegirwho - Apr 5, 2014 at 4:36 PM

I had to turn it off. Would have loved to watch but just couldn’t stand to listen to him.

      • drewzducks - Apr 5, 2014 at 4:43 PM

There’s a brand new, hi tech invention called a mute button.

    • flyerspsu - Apr 5, 2014 at 4:38 PM

hey theres something us flyers and penguins fans can agree on

    • hockeyfan1987 - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:05 PM

Jack Edwards is nowhere near as terrible as steigerwald and errey. At least Edwards knows the game of hockey and works with Brinkley whose pretty sharp. Errey doesn’t do anything except worship at the alter of pittsburgh and steigerwald only knows how to make terrible jokes about hobey bakers death.

      • c9castine - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:16 PM

ive watched pretty much every minute of every game for years and i have never heard steigerwald make a joke about hobey baker’s death. then again i try not to listen to him, but it doesn’t seem like the only thing he knows.

bob errey was a captain in the NHL and has a couple rings on his finger. id say he knows a thing or two about playing the game of hockey. he does worship at the altar of Pittsburgh but a lot of people who call themselves Pittsburghers do…its an identity city. you either are, or are not. it is pretty over the top sometimes though.

that being said, they are an awful broadcasting team and have to be bottom 5 in the league. dont just make stuff up about it though.

      • hockeyfan1987 - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:23 PM

Make stuff up? Enjoy the link.

ok buddy, great. i never said he didnt do it. i even acknowledged i try to tune him out when im not able to listen to Lange because as i said, hes terrible.

saying its “all he knows how to do” because he did it once 5 years ago is making stuff up. dont be a drama queen. just state things as they are. hes a dumba$$ who once made a terrible joke about hobey baker’s death. sold.

    • govtminion - Apr 5, 2014 at 7:47 PM

Could be worse. You could be stuck (as I am at the moment) listening to the two idiots calling Capitals games…

  4. bleedrangerblue - Apr 5, 2014 at 4:55 PM

Hate the B’s , hate the Flyers!! Glad boston won. Jack Edwards is the worst. I can’t stand his games. Typical attitude…..

  5. titansbro - Apr 5, 2014 at 4:59 PM

Or just use your local radio broadcast. Not that difficult. He’s no different than any other homer announcer.

  6. bleedrangerblue - Apr 5, 2014 at 5:21 PM

@titansbro. Yes dude there is a difference. Sam Rosen doesn’t act like that.

  7. the8man - Apr 5, 2014 at 5:51 PM

No one in black and gold celebrating. All this means is that if there is a game 7 it happens in Boston. Better to get it done before then. There is still work to do.

    Go Bs!

  8. slaugin - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:01 PM

IMO More importantly is that the first 2 games of every series starts in Boston

  9. joey4id - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:13 PM

What an ugly d play by Grossman on the first goal. 1-he gets beat on the outside, 2- didn’t take his man in from the net. 3 – tries to play the puck with his feet. Their blue liners are a little better with A-Mac, but still too slow with Schenn, Coburn, and Grossman. There’s now way they make it to the SCF.

Coburn gets caught inside the Bs blue line and ends up fiving up a 2 – 1

Grossman and Coburn cough up the puck in their zone leading to Bs 2nd goal.

Player blows by Schenn for a clear break

    • c9castine - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:24 PM

yeah i dont know why the dont just quit now.

      lol

      • c9castine - Apr 5, 2014 at 7:29 PM

should i point out my sarcasm?

  10. c9castine - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:25 PM

congratulations to the boston bruins! yay!

    • drewzducks - Apr 6, 2014 at 1:41 AM

Let’s just hope they don’t disappoint as badly as last year’s regular season E.C. #1 seed.

      • c9castine - Apr 6, 2014 at 6:11 PM

i moved on a long long time ago. cant say the same for a lot boston fans.

winner or loser, probably a good idea to put it in the rear view mirror, eh?

      • drewzducks - Apr 6, 2014 at 7:32 PM

It’s obvious that you’ve moved on from your stalking of about 80-90% of any Bruins related post, but that’s ok, you’re not alone when it comes to trolling.

      • c9castine - Apr 6, 2014 at 9:53 PM

might have something to do with the false sense of entitlement you guys carry around like you achieved your objective last year.

      • drewzducks - Apr 6, 2014 at 10:19 PM

I can’t speak for other Bruins fans, nor can you for your Pens brethren, but as pleased as I was with their efforts last season I certainly wasn’t satisfied with the end result. Not sure where the “false sense of entitlement” comment comes from. Pretty sure most pundits had the B’s and P’s as the top 2 teams in the East this year, which has proven to be correct as of now. I’ve seen enough hockey over the last several years, with more lows than highs, to not take anything for granted.

  11. csilojohnson - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:26 PM

Edwards is by far the worst all around. Bob and Paul are jinx machines. Ussually tune them out. Hard to use internet radio feed given the delay is different. Wish i could listen to Mike.

  12. President Charles Logan - Apr 5, 2014 at 6:40 PM

love those bruins alternate 3rd jersey’s , they are better then the regular ones.

    • c9castine - Apr 5, 2014 at 7:28 PM

      they sure are cute!

wonder what kind of matching accessories they sell…

  13. ronniethec - Apr 5, 2014 at 8:16 PM

Nice to be in LA listening to hall of famer Bob Miller and Jim Fox. Best broadcast team in the business. They are totally fair in their assessments and don’t scream when the Kings score.

  14. ironyisadeadscene - Apr 5, 2014 at 8:32 PM

Laughlin is terrible……extreme homerism and the worst nasally voice ever. As a boston fan, I agree how bad Edwards is….brickley is great though…just wish he had a different partner

  15. matthews4 - Apr 5, 2014 at 8:48 PM

Bobby Taylor is the worst Homer ever, Edwards is correct on the horrible officiating over the last 2 weeks. I like his enthusiasm . He is geeky at times but he will at least speak what he feels and it’s not the bland PC correct broadcast all of us could do at this point. He will also admit when he is wrong, unlike a lot of other tools in the business.

  16. zetaone - Apr 5, 2014 at 9:22 PM

Why does almost every post have some variation of the word homer in it? I don’t see the word homer used anywhere else on the internet besides on PHT.. Guess it’s like the recirculated air on an airplane, full of all kinds of shared diseases. Regardless, I still agree about Edwards, he’s terrible.

  17. titansbro - Apr 5, 2014 at 9:43 PM

I never said I liked Edwards, I hate over the top homer broadcasters, even when it’s my team. But he really isn’t any worse than many, many other homer broadcasters. If you think he’s bad, you should hear tommy heinsohn who does celtics games. I flat out can’t listen to that guy.

  18. sabatimus - Apr 5, 2014 at 10:46 PM

I’ve come to accept Jack. Hated him bad when he first joined NESN. He’s an idiot and he acknowledges the fact that he’s wrong a lot–Brickley corrects him at least once a game. One thing about Jack is that he’s not flat-affect at all, which is a good thing. He even gets excited at times about the opposing team scoring.

Worst homer announcer in sports? I’d say Hawk Harrelson or Tommy Heinsohn. Worst announcer in sports period? Joe Buck. The guy makes each World Series sound like a complete downer.

Wow…this thread got hijacked. How about those Bruins winning the East? Pretty impressive, eh?
