Video: The Preds think Shea Weber should win the Norris

Apr 3, 2014, 4:42 PM EST

The video makes a pretty good case. And so do Weber’s statistics — 21 goals (the most in the NHL by a d-man), 29 assists, while logging 26:51 of ice time per game, and playing in all situations.

Granted, Duncan Keith, Erik Karlsson, Alex Pietrangelo, and Ryan Suter can each make pretty strong cases, too.

But do they have videos?

I haven’t seen enough of his games. I have seen many of the Hawks and Pens game, and would say that Keith and Niskanen should be very strong candidates to win this award.

    • c9castine - Apr 3, 2014 at 6:17 PM

well, first we have to debate what the award really is unfortunately.

keith has obviously been great and scored a lot. niskanen has been a pretty dominant defender and scored plenty but isnt as versatile as some of these other guys. weber has had a great year, scoring a lot obviously and playing good hockey but i always think your team needs to be in the playoffs for you to get a “best..” award. hes a -6 which i dont blame him too much for but its still something.

my vote goes to Pietrangelo. 50 pts, +23, 25.5 min per game. Only 2 goals on the PP as compared to 11 for weber. 22 PIM about half of weber’s. Best defender on the team on arguably the best team in the league with one of the biggest goal differentials.

      • joey4id - Apr 3, 2014 at 6:28 PM

Hmm! No debate… please.. :-) Pietrangelo is certainly not a bad choice. I think Niskanen did more for his team than any other d man considering all the injuries the Pens had on D.

      • c9castine - Apr 3, 2014 at 6:37 PM

well, that argument can certainly be made. he did do that…

  2. nunan - Apr 3, 2014 at 4:47 PM

Legit candidate but not bc he’s scored 21 goals, bc he’s one of the best at actually playing defense. Goals should only be considered for this award if the guy can actually play defense. Subban and Karlsson winning this is a joke. Chara or Weber actually make sense.

    • nunan - Apr 3, 2014 at 4:52 PM

Might as well give the Selke to Ovechkin

    • tomas3345 - Apr 3, 2014 at 4:53 PM

do you believe they should make 2 awards norris for best D-man and another for best offensive defense man.
in recent years this trophy has been a joke

      • nunan - Apr 3, 2014 at 5:05 PM

I’ve thought that but then I think, how many awards do we need? Kind of makes sense though. Call it the Orr award (for offense and defense) as best all around..

    • withseidelinn - Apr 3, 2014 at 6:25 PM

Exactly. He is the ideal defenseman. I think he should be top 3 every year. Only reason he isn’t is because of the caliber of the Predators.

  3. Idaslapter - Apr 3, 2014 at 5:01 PM

Weber is the best all around D in the league.

  4. areaman714 - Apr 3, 2014 at 5:15 PM

Yep. The award pretty much his until he retires. My team is the Ducks and we have never been able to figure him out.

  5. drewsylvania - Apr 3, 2014 at 5:29 PM

Weber, Chara, or Keith would be good choices.

Karlsson is the worst defenseman I have ever seen. He shouldn’t even be called a defenseman. The position he plays is “fourth forward”.

    • prd797 - Apr 3, 2014 at 6:19 PM

      Worse than Mike Green?!

      • drewsylvania - Apr 3, 2014 at 6:46 PM

Maybe! Haven’t studied Green much this year….

  6. killerpgh - Apr 3, 2014 at 5:39 PM

I’m just thankful Holmgren wasn’t patient enough to work with Poile when they were trying to work out a trade for Weber 2 off seasons ago and tried to force the small market Preds hand with a contract he thought the couldn’t match. Weber is want the Flyers (and just about every other team) needs.

  7. btlpper68 - Apr 3, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Yea he should plays pk, unlike Keith he goes against te other teams first line, he has 21 goals including many ppg plays about 25 min a game he’s shutdown d he completely got snubbed when karlson took his Norris so he should win

  8. dropthepuckeh - Apr 3, 2014 at 6:32 PM

Wow, Chara not even mentioned in the article Jason? Hard to imagine he won’t be in the top three and arguably should win it but certainly mentions a mention don’t you think? Hard to imagine another player opposing forwards fear more. My money is on him winning too…

  9. patthehockeyfan - Apr 3, 2014 at 8:03 PM

I’ll do the homer thing here and nominate Drew Doughty. Not because I’m a Kings’ fan; but, because I think he’s an excellent defenseman.

  10. Lupy Nazty Philthy - Apr 4, 2014 at 12:34 AM

Tough call between Weber or Keith so far this year. Third Norris nom should be Pietrangelo, Doughty or Chara, imo… but I won’t be surprised if the NHL rewards another powerplay specialist like Karlsson or Subban again.

I prefer the Norris to go to a defenseman who can live up to the position’s name and play defense. Maybe we were spoiled having Lidstrom around for so many years.
